PESHAWAR: The first anniversary of veteran politician, industrialist and the country’s first woman federal minister Begum Kulsum Saifullah Khan was observed in the city on Tuesday.

A gathering was arranged at the residence of Salim Saifullah Khan where a large number of people paid glowing tributes to Begum Kulsum and extended their sympathy to her son, Salim Saifullah, and other members of the family.

Speaking to journalists, Salim lauded Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif’s decision to retire upon termination of his service. He concurred with the army chief’s statement that refusing to extend his service will improve the image of the country and its people.

“The COAS is setting a good precedent for other leaders,” he said.

Salim recalled that after assuming office, the army chief made valuable contributions to ensure peace and eradicate terrorism in the country. He hoped that after his retirement, the army chief would continue to play a vital role in eliminating extremism from the country.

About law and order in the country, Salim said, “Although it is far from satisfactory, the present government, along with security forces, has done a great deal in the last two years – improvements have been made and they will take time to show.”

The K-P Assembly speaker, Pakistan Peoples Party leader Kiramatullah Khan Chagharmati, and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Provincial Secretary General Rahmat Salam Khattak attended the gathering.

A gathering was also held at Saifullah Khan’s house in Lakki Marwat. Humayun Saifullah Khan, Anwar Saifullah Khan, DC Muhammad Bakhtiar Khan, Maulana Habibullah Haqqani, Ghulamuddin Marwat and district nazim Ashfaq Khan were present on the occasion.
