PESHAWAR:

An accountability court sent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf district councillor Syed Wajid Ali Shah for Mansehra on a 14-day judicial remand on Friday. He was arrested on charges of embezzling Rs57 million in development funds approved by the then prime minister in 2012.

Shah was arrested earlier in January and was charged with misappropriating funds allocated for NA-21, Mansehra. National Accountability Bureau investigation officer Muhammad Gul Afridi produced him before accountability court judge Ibrahim Khan where he requested extending Shah’s physical remand. However, the court dismissed NAB’s plea and sent Wajid on judicial remand.

NAB has arrested former Mansehra district coordination officer and incumbent Independent Monitoring Unit Director General Zulfiqar Ali, former planning and development additional secretary Dr Ambar Ali and sub-divisional engineer Athar Ali on charges of embezzlement in the same case. Their bail applications were dismissed by Peshawar High Court on Wednesday.

The suspects are said to have embezzled funds amounting to Rs100 million, which were approved by the then prime minister, for development schemes for Kala Dhaka and Mansehra in 2012.
