Wensam college violence: Gomel University closed after protest

Boys from Wensam College resorted to protests following the college administration’s decision to expel four students

DI KHAN: Gomal University has been closed “until further notice” after students’ protests at Wensam College over the expulsion of four of their fellows from the college hostel. The order to shut down the university was given by Gomel University Acting Vice Chancellor Saeed Rauf Khattak “due to law and order situation and to avoid any mishap” read a notification issued on January 12. The short notification, a copy of which is available with The Express Tribune, also asked all students to “vacate the hostel” within 24 hours. Boys from Wensam College, which is affiliated with Gomel University, resorted to protests following the college administration’s decision to expel four students from the hostel. As the news of their expulsion spread, college students gathered to protest and proceeded to boycott classes. They broke windows and forcibly closed the main college gate. When tension escalated, the college administration called the police which baton charged the students and dispersed them. According to the handout, teaching and administrative staff will remain on duty.
