Well done, Supreme Court

Letter January 06, 2016
Now it is up to the govt to do its part by swiftly and without delay carry out the death sentence restored by SC

KARACHI: This refers to a recent news report in your newspaper about Salmaan Taseer’s fifth death anniversary and clerics flexing their muscles for Mumtaz Qadri’s release. The Supreme Court rejected the review petition of Qadri, an Elite Force commando, who assassinated Mr Taseer in cold blood on January 4, 2011.

The Supreme Court has done its job and delivered justice. Now it is up to the government to do its part by swiftly and without delay, fear or favour, carry out the death sentence restored by the Supreme Court. Let’s hope the government does not procrastinate like it always does in matters like these. A swift decision by the government will help restore the writ of sanity in Pakistan and send a strong message to people who think it is their birthright to take the law of the land in their own hands.

Any delay by the government, I am afraid, will make matters worse and might even prompt Qadri to commit ‘suicide’ in jail as he has already threatened. Then we will go back to square one and insanity will again prevail. Next time, the judiciary might also look the other way.
