LAHORE:

The government should take steps to revive the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), instead of selling it off to please international monetary institutions, Jamaat-i-Islami general secretary Liaquat Baloch said on Sunday.

He was talking to several labour leaders. He said that the Senate had passed a resolution against the privatisation of PIA.

“The government should not ignore the lawmakers. Corporations like PIA and Wapda should not be given to favourites on throwaway prices. Instead, the government should take steps to end the problems faced by these state-owned enterprises. The government should not forget the plight of workers and their families if their livelihood is snatched from them,” he said.

Baloch said PIA was a national asset and its privatisation was not possible without consensus from all stakeholders. He said the government should take this issue seriously and take steps to resolve it immediately.
