PESHAWAR: Over 124 girls from seminaries and government schools participated in a sports gala in the city, stated a press release issued on Sunday.

Peace Sports Gala was a district-level event that was held in Madrassa Iqra Darul Quran Al-Karim in Hayatabad. It was organised by Peace Education and Development (PEAD) Foundation in collaboration with Unicef and aimed to provide students from all backgrounds a platform to interact and learn from one another. “Badminton, cricket and skipping rope competitions were organised,” read the press release.

Touching tribute

During the closing ceremony, PEAD Field Coordinator Fozia Ali distributed trophies, gifts and certificates among participants. Students also paid tribute to victims of the Army Public School.

Sumbul, a seminary student, said,“All those who [engage in] killings can never be called human.” The heads of participating seminaries and schools were also present on the occasion.

Bridging the gap

Speaking on the occasion, Shandana Ikram, who heads a seminary for girls, lauded the initiative, saying such events enhance cooperation between students from seminaries and government schools.

“For the first time I heard my seminary students giggle and sound so happy,” the document quoted Ikram as saying. “I can tell my students were pleased.” Haseena Wazir, a government schoolteacher, said such activities encourage students to become confident and help them become good samaritans who can work towards a peaceful and cohesive society.
