English Lions defeat hosts in Super Over of fifth T20

KARACHI: Pakistan A lost their five-match T20 series 3-2 against English Lions as the visitors won the decider in the Super Over by four runs  at the ICC Academy in Dubai on Wednesday.

Needing 13 off six, the Pakistan trio of Sharjeel Khan, Sohaib Maqsood and Ifitkhar Ahmed — who just stood at the non-striker’s end for two deliveries — could only manage 8-1 as Tom Curran bowled well under pressure.

Earlier, skipper Junaid Khan conceded 12 runs in the Super Over.

The fifth match was befitting of a finale, with both teams fighting it out till the very end after coming into the match squared at 2-2.

Sharjeel propels Pakistan A to victory

Set a target of 166, Lions finished with 165-4 after a dramatic turn of events towards the end of their innings.

At one stage, the Englishmen needed just 31 in five overs after Aamir Yamin had given away 20 runs in the 15th over of the innings.

But Junaid and Rumman Raees, who has been the most consistent fast-bowler for Pakistan on the tour, brought their team into the match as they conceded just 20 runs between them.

Mohammad Nawaz was asked to bowl the final over with Lions needing 11 off six. The innings finished with Dawid Malan being run-out when only one was required off the last delivery after starring with a 55-ball 81, which included two sixes and eight boundaries.

Fast-rising Sam Billing also hit a splendid 50 off 31 with two maximums and four strikes to the fence.

Rumman bagged two wickets, while Nawaz snagged one scalp.

In the first innings, Pakistan A batted well, reaching 165-3 in their 20 overs. Everyone who got the chance chipped in with runs as Maqsood top-scored with 40 with six fours while Iftikhar made 29.

Sharjeel slammed a quickfire 28, consisting of two sixes and as many fours, while Yameen and Babar Azam remained unbeaten on 27 and 24 respectively.
