WOLFSBURG: There were dramatic scenes following Wolfsburg's Champions League win over Manchester United on Tuesday when a suspect package was found in the stadium's car park.

"On a car in the parking area, a suspicious box was found which we could not identify," said police spokesman Sven-Marco Claus, who said they had merely taken precautions as there had been no actual bomb threat.

The stadium's VIP area was evacuated and fans were forced to stay in the ground until the all-clear was given by a firm which specialises in explosive substances.

Shock, horror for 80,000 fans at Stade de France

An area of the Volkswagen Arena car park was closed off and fans were eventually allowed to leave by designated routes to the north and south of the stadium.

Shortly after the match, which Wolfsburg won 3-2, a message on the stadium's main screens asked fans to remain in the Volkswagen Arena and to stay calm.

German football grounds are on a high state of alert since a bomb threat in Hannover last month forced Germany's international friendly against the Netherlands to be cancelled.
