Rs5.3 trillion recovered in 2 years, says report exposing scale of Pakistan's corruption crisis

Corruption recoveries totaling Rs5.3 trillion in just two years represent only a fraction of the true cost to Pakistan's economy, the International Monetary Fund said Wednesday in a scorching assessment that found corruption "persistent and corrosive" at every level of government.

After holding back for almost three months, the Ministry of Finance released the Governance and Corruption Diagnostics Report to meet the IMF’s condition to release it before the meeting of the executive board for the approval of the $1.2 billion worth two loan tranches.

The Rs5.3 trillion figure added up from January 2023 to December 2024.

In the 186-page report, the global lender said that there was no reliable measure to quantify scale of corruption in Pakistan but said that “those costs can be gleaned from the recovery of corruption-related assets”. The IMF said the NAB recoveries in just two years are just one of the ways to scale the depth of corruption. The money obtained through asset recoveries by NAB reflects only one element in total costs of corruption to the economy, it added.

{{pdf}}

The IMF analysis projected that Pakistan could generate between a 5% to 6.5% increase in GDP by pushing through a package of governance reforms over the course of five years.

Pakistan has gone to the IMF 24 times since 1958, making it one of the Fund's most frequent borrowers. Nearly every government - military or civilian - has had to seek IMF assistance, reflecting Pakistan's chronic balance of payments crises.

The current deal under Shehbaz Sharif is Pakistan's 25th IMF program.

“Shortly after independence, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s founding father, denounced corruption in 1947 as a poison that needed to be eradicated,” said the IMF. “More than 70 years later, corruption continues to hinder Pakistan’s macroeconomic and social development by diverting public funds, distorting markets, impeding fair competition, eroding public trust, and constraining domestic and foreign investment.”

It added, “Corruption is a persistent and corrosive feature of Pakistan’s governance,” in a remark that spares none of the successive governments and dictators that have remained in power. One example cited is of the PTI government’s decision in 2019 to allow sugar exports as one of the examples of how corrupt elites have captured policies to their benefits.

The IMF report that will also be read in other world capitals, stated that Pakistanis are regularly required to pay officials for access to services. At a higher level, official policies and practices have been shaped by economic and political elites to make use of public authority to enrich themselves at the cost of greater societal well-being and economic growth.

Here are the Pakistani leaders who have signed IMF deals:

Military Rulers:

Gen. Ayub Khan (1960s) - Early IMF engagement
	Gen. Zia-ul-Haq (1980s) - Multiple programs
Gen. Pervez Musharraf (1999-2008) - Major program in 2000-01, another in 2008

Civilian Prime Ministers:

Nawaz Sharif (Multiple terms: 1990-93, 1997-99, 2013-17) - Signed deals in 1997 and 2013 (the 2013 program was a major $6.6 billion EFF)
Benazir Bhutto (1988-90, 1993-96) - Programs in her tenures
	Shaukat Aziz (2004-07) - Under Musharraf's presidency
Yousuf Raza Gilani/Asif Ali Zardari (PPP government 2008-13) - 2008 SBA
Imran Khan (2018-22) - Signed $6 billion EFF in 2019
Shehbaz Sharif (2022-present) - Signed $3 billion SBA in 2023, current $7 billion EFF in 2024

The capture of judicial institutions and the lack of accountability for corrupt practices fosters corruption and the outflow of capital tied to the proceeds of corruption that might be more productively used in Pakistan, it added.

The IMF said that that indicators reflect weak control of corruption over time with negative consequences for public spending effectiveness, revenue collection, and trust in the legal system.

“The most economically damaging manifestations involve privileged entities that exert influence over key economic sectors, including those owned by or affiliated with the state.”

These dynamics are compounded by perceptions that the anti-corruption approach has lacked consistency and impartiality, contributing to diminished public confidence in enforcement institutions.

The IMF defines corruption as the abuse of authority for private gain. Corruption can be an individual act such as requesting or accepting a bribe, or it can happen through a long-standing network of public and private actors who work together to capture contracts, markets, or sometime entire governments.

The IMF said that Pakistan’s corruption risks are generated by weaknesses in budgeting and reporting of fiscal information, and management of public financial and non-financial resources, particularly in capital spending, public procurement, and the management and oversight of state-owned enterprises in an overly complex and opaque tax system.

The IMF said that Pakistan’s judicial sector is organizationally complex, is not able to reliably enforce contracts or protect property rights due to problems with efficiency, antiquated laws, and the integrity of judges and judicial personnel.

“Corruption risks are exacerbated by fragmentation among accountability institutions and limitations in their operational independence,” said the Fund.

Rule of law
The IMF said that governance weaknesses in the judicial sector constrain the ability of parties to rely on the effective enforcement of their economic rights and lead to exposure to corruption risks.

Existing mechanisms for overseeing the efficiency and ethics of judicial officers need to be strengthened to support improved performance and increased public trust.

The IMF wrote the report after fielding two missions to Pakistan that focused on examining the nature and severity of corruption and identifying the governance weaknesses and corruption vulnerabilities.

It said that its exercise was confined to corruption and governance issues at the federal level while important, broader political and institutional dynamics, including provincial governance and the role of the military, were largely outside the scope of this exercise.

“The recently established Special Investment Facilitation Council, which has been vested with substantial authority to facilitate foreign investments, operates with untested transparency and accountability provisions,” the IMF report said.

The sugar mills
While citing the 2019 infamous sugar export case of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s regime, the IMF said that the sugar sector provides a case study of how the intertwined relationship between economic elites and state regulators combine to capture public benefits at deep costs to the overall public.

“Sugar mill owners, many of whom hold government positions, have ensured highly ‘recommended’ prices for sugarcane and protective tariffs, keeping their operations profitable at the expense of competitiveness and they have also influenced export and pricing policies to their advantage.

In 2018–19, a government decision allowed significant sugar exports, even subsidizing them, which created domestic shortages and price spikes for consumers," said the Fund.

The IMF said that a high-profile investigation, led by the FIA, found that leading sugar mill owners colluded to create artificial shortages and manipulate prices despite ample warehouse stocks. It uncovered fraudulent practices, including speculative hoarding and the laundering of illicit profits through fake accounts. The inquiry’s report named political heavyweights as culprits and confirmed that an export push (approved by government officials tied to the industry) had caused domestic prices to soar.58 Despite damning revelations, accountability has been limited, it added.

Judiciary
The IMF said that corruption is viewed as an important factor influencing judicial performance and undermining the rule of law in Pakistan

While citing various surveys, the IMF said that the National Corruption Survey consistently found that respondents viewed the judiciary as one of the most corrupt sectors, together with the police and public procurement.

“The judiciary is consistently identified in public surveys as one of the most corrupt state functions, indicating the lack of trust in current judicial practices.”

The report underlined that Pakistan's judicial system faces considerable obstacles in practice with respect to judicial independence, against the fragmented organizational backdrop.

26th constitutional amendment
The recent changes in the appointment process for Supreme Court judges have prompted discussion and a constitutional petition regarding potential implications for judicial independence and rule of law.

“The 26th Constitutional Amendment changed the appointment process for the Chief Justice (nomination by Special Parliamentary Committee with representation from women and minorities) and expanded the number of members in the Judicial Commission of Pakistan,” said the Fund.

The report further stated that while the amendments aim to broaden participation and enhance inclusivity, several stakeholders have expressed concerns that, absent adequate safeguards, the reforms could be perceived as heightening potential risks to judicial independence.

The IMF said that to reinforce confidence in the integrity of the appointment process, the authorities could consider codifying clear and objective selection criteria for judges; adopting transparent, evidence-based evaluation procedures; and integrating integrity and ethics screening as a systematic component of a merit-based process, consistent with international good practice.

Government discards floods, terrorism, abandons agenda as PTI lawmakers run 'awami assembly' outside parliament

The national assembly ran two sessions today. Not much was acheived in either of them. “Count the quorum,” chorused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members of National Assembly, as the official session commenced.

"We were meant to discuss the floods and the terror attack in Balochistan today, please sit down," pleaded NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq as the PTI members moved towards the exit.

On a day, when Punjab is reeling from over two weeks of relentless, uninterrupted flooding, and the country is overwhelmed with residual damage from recent deathly floods in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, the opposition and the government could not set aside their personal disdain for each other long enough to take up the day's agenda.

Thousands of citizens across the country have been displaced. They are cramped in make shift tents and government schools, where bathroom facilities are scarce and food supply is limited. Livestock has been uprooted and vast acres of agricultural land devastated.

Read: Did India deliberately flood Pakistan?

This monsoon season, which began on June 16, has claimed 884 lives and injured at least 1,176. In Buner, entire families have perished in landslides triggered by torrential rain while across Punjab entire villages have been uprooted.

Elsewhere, in Balochistan, there has been a spate of terror attacks in recent months with the most recent taking earlier this week, when a suicide bomber decimated 15 civilans in Quetta near a poltical rally. The attacker had meant to target the rally taken out by Balochistan National Party (BNP)-Mengal in protest of Balochistan Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leader Dr Mahrung Baloch and other Baloch political leaders' arrest, and a police crackdown on ongoing sit-ins. Quetta District authorities had reportedly denied BNP-Mengal lisence to hold the rally.

Yet, our elected legislators, members of National Assembly, continue their staunch tradition of letting intra party disputes stand higher than national concerns.

Federal Law Minister Azam Tarar accused the PTI of being "selfish" and positioning their political ambitions above the "country's needs".

Yet, when PTI's Barrister Gohar Ali Khan drew attention to the National Disaster Management Authority's (NDMA) performance during the floods, live feed of the session was disrupted on the state broadcaster's channel.

Khan ignored the law minister and marched down the aisle, exiting with the rest of the opposition lawmakers. Khan said this was part of PTI's continued boycott of the house and set up his party's own impromptu assembly outside the parliament premises. Asad Qaiser led the proceedings during this "awami assembly" - as they put it. Here, a "resolution" was passed to extend the deadline for repatriation of Afghan citizens. Those privy to the matter remain unaware of this "assembly's" jurisdiction.

Speaker Sadiq took this opportunity to remind the house that PTI complains of not being given space to put forth their views before the house and yet, were leaving now when they had the floor.

As water heads downstream from Multan to Sindh, it is apparent that the public cannot look to the country's leaders for comfort. Are these the people's representatives who will lead us out of disaster as the country grapples with climate change and a resurgance in terrorism?

Lahore ATC denies IO's request for 30-day extension in physical remand, next hearing slated for Sept 11

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore sent ousted premier Imran Khan's nephew Shershah Khan on 14-day judicial remand on Thursday, denying the investigation officer's (IO) request for extension in physical remand.

During the hearing, IO Muhammad Ashraf Javed sought a 30-day extension to the five-day physical remand granted earlier on August 23. The IO contended that further time was required to recover Shershah's mobile phone and a mask allegedly used at the time of the incident - Shershah was arrested in connection with May 9 riots - and to obtain details of his social media accounts.

The IO apprised the court that a photgrammetry test was conducted and a "wooden danda [stick]" was recovered from his possession.

The court observed that sufficient investigation had already been carried out and that tracing social media accounts does not require further custody of the accused in the “present era of technology and digital devices”.

Consequently, the court dismissed the request for further physical remand and instead sent Shershah on judicial remand for 14 days, directing the IO to submit the challan within the stipulated period. Shershah, who is Aleema Khan's son, is to be produced before the court again on September 11, 2025.

Shershah was produced before the court for the hearing. His lawyers Rana Mudassar Umer, Salman Akram Raja and Taimoor, also appeared before the court. Deputy Prosecutor General Imtiaz Ahmad Sipra and DSP Legal Investigation Dr Javed Asif were also in attendance.

Shershah was arrested a day after his elder brother Shahrez was arrested by Punjab Police. Shahrez was handed over to the police for eight-day physical remand.

Reports surfaced, mainly from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers and leaders, of unidentified men storming Shershah's residence in Lahore, assaulting household staff, harassing family members and taking him away, before police produced him before the court on August 22.

Following the arrest of her elder son, Shahrez Khan, earlier this week, Aleema Khan’s younger son, Shershah Khan, was also taken into custody, officials confirmed on Friday.

A Lahore police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Sher Shah was taken into custody at around 1:40pm today.

He said the arrest was carried out by the same team involved in Thursday’s operation, shortly after Shah was returning from a hearing at the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC).

According to the official, Shah was apprehended near the American School on Upper Mall and subsequently moved to an undisclosed location.

Earlier, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) official account claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that Shershah was picked up in broad daylight.

PTI Chairperson Barrister Gohar Ali Khan reacted strongly to the arrest of Aleema Khan’s second son, Shershah Khan.

“By arresting Imran Khan’s family members, the government is deliberately creating political tension,” said Barrister Gohar.

The news comes in a few hours after an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore granted the police eight-day physical remand of Aleema's other son Shahrez.

According to PTI leaders, the raid took place late Wednesday night when a group of unidentified individuals allegedly forced their way into Aleema Khan’s residence. Party officials claimed that household staff were assaulted, family members harassed, and Shahrez Khan was taken from his bedroom in front of his children.

PTI’s central information department issued a statement describing the incident as “the height of thuggery and oppression,” adding that “even domestic workers were subjected to brutal violence.”

The party further alleged that the raid occurred just a day after Shahrez had been prevented from travelling abroad with his wife, when he was reportedly stopped at Lahore airport and “illegally offloaded” from a flight. PTI leaders said the timing of the two incidents indicated a deliberate campaign of harassment targeting relatives of Imran Khan.

Shahrez Khan, 39, was a well-known triathlete and businessman. Educated at Aitchison College in Lahore, he later earned an MBA from Oxford University before joining Simba Global, an Australia-based linen supplier, where he served as regional head. Issues notices to NA speaker, Senate chairperson on Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz's petitions against denotification

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) issued a stay order on Tuesday, halting the appointment of new opposition leaders in the National Assembly and Senate following the disqualification of PTI’s Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz.

The court issued notices to the National Assembly speaker, Senate chairperson, and other relevant officials, directing them to submit responses by August 15.

On August 5, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had disqualified Ayub and Faraz, along with other opposition MNAs and MPAs, following their convictions in three cases related to the May 9, 2023 riots.

Subsequently, on August 8, both leaders were removed from their posts via notifications issued by the NA and Senate secretariats.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Syed Arshad Ali and Justice Dr Khurshid Iqbal heard petitions filed by both leaders against their de-notification by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Read: ECP disqualifies three PTI lawmakers following ATC verdict in May 9 case

During the hearing, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, representing the petitioners, argued that the ECP had disqualified the two leaders without receiving a reference from the NA speaker or Senate chairperson, terming it a constitutional overreach.

“ECP acted without authority, until a reference is sent by the speaker, it has no power to disqualify a member,” he said.

He maintained that opposition leadership is a constitutional position and, under Assembly rules, cannot be removed through unilateral action by the ECP.

Gohar referred to a past Supreme Court ruling to argue that once a candidate becomes an elected member, the ECP’s jurisdiction ends.

Speaking to media outside the court, Barrister Gohar said the current wave of disqualifications and punishments would not resolve political issues.

“Everyone may have made mistakes, but the solution lies in dialogue, not disqualification,” he said. “If the country’s largest party is sidelined, it poses serious risks to democracy.”

Gohar also highlighted what he called discriminatory treatment of PTI, stating that the ECP accepted the intra-party elections of other parties but rejected PTI’s, despite them being conducted in a more transparent manner.

He further said that PTI, having won 180 seats in the February 8 elections, had now been reduced to 76 seats in the Assembly, alleging political victimisation.

The case will be taken up again on August 15.

ATC sentences

On July 31, an anti-terrorism court in Faisalabad sentenced more than 100 PTI leaders and workers to prison terms of up to 10 years in connection with the May 9 riots.

Among those given rigorous imprisonment were senior opposition figures, including Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Zartaj Gul, and Sunni Ittehad Council chief Hamid Raza.

Following, Ismael Khan was sentenced to life improsenment and an order to forfeit his entire property was passed.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)'s internal rifts were exposed at Adiala Jail, as party leaders bickered over the Islamabad protest and Imran Khan's jail conditions.

PTI founding chairman Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, sister Aleema Khan and party leaders Faisal Chaudhry, Barrister Gohar Khan, and Mashal Yousafzai were all present when an argument erupted over the aftermath of the November 24 protest, Express News reported.

Bushra Bibi voiced her frustration over Punjab’s lackluster response to the protest, claiming that the region had not shown enough support to the party during its November protest in Islamabad.

In contrast, Barrister Gohar Khan defended Punjab’s efforts, pointing to the harsh crackdown and the arrest of 5,000 party members, which he argued severely hampered PTI’s operations in the province.

The exchange took a turn when Aleema Khan confronted Faisal Chaudhry, questioning why PTI’s founder, Imran Khan, wasn’t being provided newspapers and other basic jail facilities.

Chaudhry defended the party's efforts but turned the blame back on senior officials, questioning why they weren’t taking more responsibility by attending court hearings themselves.

The tension deepened when Aleema Khan raised concerns over the Islamabad High Court’s monitoring commission.

Faisal Chaudhry clarified that the commission was court-mandated and out of their control. However, Mashal Yousafzai accused Chaudhry of undermining the commission’s work, leading to a sharp exchange of words.

Barrister Gohar Khan, attempting to quell the disagreement, advised the group to leave certain decisions to party leadership, suggesting that widespread public commentary on protests and internal matters only bred confusion.

Amidst the bickering, PTI founding chairman Imran Khan expressed grave concerns over what he said was the rise of "fascism" in Punjab, claming that it had instilled fear among the public.

Fve cases presented related to burning police vehicles near Mughalpura, Zaman Park, and Jinnah House

The record of the cases against Shah Mehmood Qureshi was presented in the Anti-Terrorism Court during a hearing of the five cases related to burning police vehicles near Mughalpura, Zaman Park, and Jinnah House.

However, the administrative judge of the Anti-Terrorism Court, Manzar Ali Gill, adjourned the hearing on Qureshi's bail petitions in the five cases until December 11.

The cases were heard in the Anti-Terrorism Court Lahore, where the police submitted the complete record of the cases to the court.

During the proceedings, Shah Mehmood Qureshi's lawyer, Rana Mudassar Omar, was absent for arguments.

The assistant lawyer informed the court that the roads were blocked, preventing the senior lawyer from attending the hearing.

The court remarked that the roads had been cleared, and if the lawyer wished to take a new date, it could be arranged.

It is worth noting that Shah Mehmood Qureshi has submitted bail applications from jail for these cases.

Previously, ATC on November 20 indicted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Umar Sarfraz Cheema, Ijaz Chaudhary and Dr Yasmeen Rashid in a May 9 riots case.

The case, registered at Mughalpura Police Station, included charges of arson, anarchy, and disrupting law and order against PTI leaders. It stemmed from the incidents of May 9, 2023, following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty and decided to contest the charges in court. They claimed that they had nothing to do with the charges framed against them.

She alleges Rs 2 billion to be used in KPK for planned "May 9 Part Two" protests

Punjab's Information Minister Azma Bokhari has accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of arming activists and Afghan nationals for the opposition party's November 24 protest.

In a press conference, the Punjab information minister said that 'it was a solid report that the PTI has provided weapons to its "youth force as well as Afghan nationals" to disrupt the law and order situation during the party's November 24 demonstration in Islamabad.'

She further said that that PTI's founding chairman Imran Khan "needs bodies" to further his agenda, and that Rs 2 billion will be spent in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa for the planned "May 9 part Two" protests.

Bokhari also criticised the government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) for its handling of security, pointing out that recent terrorist incidents in Kurram and Parachinar had been ignored in favour of focusing on the PTI protest.

She accused K-P's Chief Minister, Ali Amin Gandapur, of disregarding the situation in the province while stoking tensions by involving political figures like Bushra Bibi.

The minister referenced the lack of response to ongoing violence in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, noting that over 40 people had been killed in recent attacks without any significant intervention from the provincial authorities.

The Punjab government has also accused the PTI leadership of providing weapons to its supporters in preparation for tomorrow's planned protest.

Bokhari further criticised Bushra Bibi's political involvement, suggesting that her engagement in political affairs was inappropriate, particularly in light of her role in the party's internal dynamics.

Previously, Bokhari made similar statements as she criticised K-P, describing it as a "hideout for terrorists," urging the Peshawar High Court (PHC) to take immediate action.

Speaking to the media in on September 10, Azma alleged that Zartaj Gul, whom she described as a "terrorist", has found refuge in K-P.

She questioned why no action was being taken and urged the judiciary to intervene.

"I don’t want conflicts between provinces, we are all Pakistanis," she added.

She also expressed disapproval of the political maneuvering based on rumours and hearsay.

Hassan defends Bushra Bibi role, says hold no formal position in party and did not name Saudi Arabia in statement

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Rauf Hassan has stated that Bushra Bibi holds no official position within the party and did not name Saudi Arabia in her recent remarks about Imran Khan's visit to Medina

Hassan condemned the government's handling of the situation, calling it a "malicious and irresponsible" attempt to create controversy.

"Saudi Arabia is our brotherly country," Hassan said, responding to ongoing claims that PTI leadership had involved Saudi Arabia in internal political matters. He questioned the government's actions, asking, “Where exactly did Bushra Bibi mention Saudi Arabia?”

Bushra Bibi, the wife of PTI founding chairman Imran Khan, stirred controversy with remarks about her husband's first visit to Medina, where he walked barefoot.

In a video, she said, "When Khan went to Medina barefoot for the first time, as soon as he returned, General Bajwa immediately started receiving calls asking, 'What is this? What have you brought here?'"

She added that the callers expressed concerns, saying, "We are trying to abolish Shariah here, and you brought the overseers of Shariah with you. We do not want this."

Bushra Bibi further stated that she and Imran Khan had been targeted 'ever since, with filth being lobbed against the wife and Khan being called an agent of the jews (Yahoodis).'

She said "if this was not true General Bajwa and his family could be asked since they had shared these details with some one, which had reached Imran Khan."

Bushra Bibi then mentioned that 'later, while in power other government departments also provide reports, they too had told 'Imran Khan that this was the real story, that Khan is being punish for this, "for your country, for real freedom, for justice and for walking barefoot in Medina, this is what he is being punished for."'

Meanwhile talking about PTI's relations with the establishment, Hassan emphasised that dialogue between PTI leadership and the establishment is crucial for the country's functioning.

He also reiterated that PTI's stance on protests remains firm, with Imran Khan holding the sole authority to call off any planned demonstrations.

When asked about the recent ruling by the Islamabad High Court, which declared the planned protests in Islamabad illegal, Hassan stated that PTI remains committed to its cause and will continue its efforts regardless of the court's decision.

Former Army Chief General (Retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa's reaction

Former Army Chief General (Retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa has strongly denied recent claims made by Bushra Bibi regarding the country’s relations with Saudi Arabia, calling her statement “100% false.”

In an exclusive conversation with Express News, General (Retd) Javed Bajwa rejected Bushra Bibi’s allegations, emphasising that no country would make such claims, particularly one with whom Pakistan has long-standing friendly ties.

He explained that during Bushra Bibi's visits to Saudi Arabia, including those to the holy sites of the Khana-e-Kaaba and the Prophet’s Mosque, she was welcomed with great honour, receiving numerous gifts.

General Bajwa further explained that both Imran and Bushra Bibi had visited Saudi Arabia multiple times, with the former army chief accompanying them during a trip in 2021. He questioned how any country could criticise the implementation of Sharia, noting that Saudi Arabia had rolled over billions of dollars in financial assistance to Pakistan.

Referring to the relationship with Saudi Arabia, Bajwa clarified that it had never deteriorated, citing a single instance in which ex foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s statement had caused some concerns in Riyadh.

Refuting Bushra Bibi’s accusations that she was criticised for her husband’s actions in Medina, Bajwa stated, "Such claims are unfounded. How can relations deteriorate when the Saudi Crown Prince himself came to receive us?"

'Constitution gives us the right to peaceful protest, we won't surrender under any circumstances': Sheikh Waqas Akram

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Secretary Information Sheikh Waqas Akram has said that the party will 'break through any barriers to reach their destination at D-Chowk, and that they will not return without achieving their objective.'

Akram stated, "The Constitution gives us the right to peaceful protest, and we will not surrender under any circumstances. On November 24, the entire nation will be on the streets," Express News reported.

Meanwhile, The leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has reiterated its stance of marching towards Islamabad tomorrow, with plans for a sit-in at D-Chowk, Islamabad, regardless of any obstacles.

In a meeting chaired by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar, senior PTI leaders including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, former President Arif Alvi, Shibli Faraz, Secretary Information Sheikh Waqas Akram, and other leaders, made the final decision to proceed with the protest.

PTI’s leadership has made it clear that the protest will take place regardless of the government’s response, and they are determined to continue their struggle for what they call a "constitutional right."

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has finalised its plan for the November 24 protest, which includes the booking of heavy machinery.

According to PTI Peshawar region president, Arbab Asim, there is no shortage of heavy machinery this time. "We will use private machinery to remove obstacles, and the responsibility for security will rest with the Youth Wing."

As PTI prepares to flex its muscles on November 24, the government has rolled out extensive security measures, including invoking Section 144 across Punjab for three days and deploying thousands of personnel in the federal capital to maintain law and order.

For the first time, high-ranking officers accompany the contingents, with district-level commanders overseeing their teams.

The Punjab inspector general is also in Islamabad to coordinate efforts.

Estranged founding member highlights alleged fraud in PTI’s intra-party elections held on March 3

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) estranged founding member Akbar S. Babar highlights alleged fraud in PTI’s intra-party elections held on March 3, and claimed that if the decision in the foreign funding case is enforced, PTI’s top leadership will face imprisonment due to large-scale irregularities.

He reiterated that he had filed the foreign funding case a decade ago.

"I was the first to expose the fraud and corruption within this so-called tsunami," Babar added.

He noted that while a verdict had been reached in the foreign funding case, its implementation had not been carried out.

He states that calls for protests and marches are being made on a daily basis and criticized the justice system, urging it to play a more active role in maintaining the rule of law.

Babar referred to the swift convictions handed down in the UK for those involved in unrest, contrasting it with the justice system in Pakistan, which he believes is failing to uphold accountability.

"Every day, there is a new call for chaos and protests," he said.

Furthermore, he accused PTI of engaging in unlawful practices and warned of consequences for the party’s leaders.

The PTI founder also criticised the party for waving the American flag during rallies, calling it a symbol of subjugation.

"Those who waved the American flag at PTI rallies should be ashamed," he remarked, asserting that PTI had never condemned the genocide in Palestine and Lebanon.

Babar concluded by alleging that PTI has been hijacked by extremists, who have endangered the basic rights of the people through protests and sit-ins.

In March 2024, Babar demanded an investigation into the party's 'secret' foreign bank accounts.

Babar, in a letter to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, wrote that no action was taken even after the verdict on the PTI foreign funding case which was announced 20 months back.

He added that legal action against PTI's foreign bank accounts was still awaited alleging that "the accounts may be used for anti-state activities".

“Despite PTI’s illegal foreign funding being proved, no action to protect the national security of Pakistan was worrisome,” said Babar in the letter.

He also asserted that all provisions of the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) August 2022 order must be implemented. Terming the secret foreign bank accounts a 'crime', the estranged PTI leader demanded accountability.

In a long-awaited verdict on PTI's prohibited funding, the ECP in August 2022 ruled that the party of former prime minister Imran Khan did indeed receive illegal funding.

Previously, Islamabad Judicial Magistrate has accepted the acquittal pleas of PTI founder Imran Khan, former Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid, and other co-accused in a case registered under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), along with violations of the Amplifier Act and other related provisions.

Court issues order during contempt hearing as objections raised over failure to facilitate party leaders meeting

The Islamabad High Court has directed the Superintendent of Adiala Jail to arrange a meeting for former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan with his party leaders on Tuesday.

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan, heard the contempt petition.

PTI’s lawyer Faisal Fareed Chaudhry, Advocate General Ayaz Shaukat, and Superintendent of Adiala Jail Abdul Ghafoor Anjum appeared before the court.

Faisal Fareed Chaudhry informed the court that a meeting had been scheduled the previous day, but it was not arranged.

He added that he had been told that Adiala Road was blocked, which had also affected the movement of other leaders, such as Asad Qaiser and Shibli Faraz, who were stopped outside the jail.

Advocate General Islamabad, Ayaz Shaukat, clarified that they had submitted a response in the contempt case, in which it was explained that, according to the court’s order, three coordinators were assigned, but no list had been provided specifying which six individuals wanted to meet Imran Khan.

The court questioned whether a list had been submitted and, if so, when the meetings would be arranged.

In response, the Superintendent of Adiala Jail, Abdul Ghafoor Anjum, explained that the meetings with Imran Khan were scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, and additional security arrangements were required on other days due to the high-profile nature of the meetings.

The court then ordered that a list of those wishing to meet Imran Khan should be compiled and sent to the Advocate General of Islamabad.

The court expressed hope that this would resolve the ongoing dispute between jail authorities and Imran Khan’s legal team.

Additionally, the court directed that a copy of the list of upcoming meetings be sent to PTI Secretary Salman Akram Raja.

Previously, Senator Faisal Vawda said that the ban on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders meeting with party's founding chairman Imran Khan was imposed at the request of the PTI leaders themselves.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed a trial court to once again hear the acquittal pleas of former prime minister Imran Khan in the £190m case.

Recently, anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on November 8 once again deferred the indictment of former prime minister Imran Khan and others accused in the case related to the attack on GHQ Rawalpindi during the unrest on May 9.

The GHQ attack case involving Imran Khan is linked to his arrest on May 9, 2023, at the Islamabad High Court, where he was attending a hearing related to allegations of corruption.

The attackers breached the GHQ gate and entered the premises, attempting to create an environment of insurrection within the country.

Following Imran's arrest, widespread protests erupted across Pakistan, with his supporters and party members demanding his release.

Court notified FIA; Bushra withdrew interim bail application after receiving protective bail.

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has ruled that Bushra Bibi, wife of jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan, cannot be arrested in any case for 14 days.

The court also issued a notice to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on the matter.

A bench comprising Justice Shakeel Ahmed and Justice Sahibzada Asadullah heard the case on Tuesday.

During the hearing, Bushra Bibi's lawyer informed the court that there are cases registered against her in various provinces, but the details have not been provided.

The lawyer requested that Bushra Bibi not be arrested.

Justice Shakeel Ahmed remarked that he believes there is no case in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

The lawyer confirmed this, stating that there is indeed no case here, which is why Bushra Bibi approached the high court.

Justice Sahibzada Asadullah asked whether a protective bail could be granted if there are no cases here.

The lawyer stated that the law and constitution provide protection to every citizen, and the PHC has previously granted protective bail.

The court has requested details of the cases from the NAB and FIA, among other agencies.

Following the court's order, Bushra Bibi decided to withdraw her application for interim bail, stating that there is no need for it after receiving protective bail.

Bushra Bibi left the high court after being granted bail.

Bushra moves PHC for transit bail

Yesterday, Bushra Bibi filed petitions in the PHC seeking details of cases against her and transit bail to enable her appearance in court.

Her attorney, Alam Khan Adenzai, submitted two separate petitions.

The first petition requests the court to direct relevant authorities to disclose all cases registered against her as the spouse of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman.

Bushra expressed that while multiple cases had been lodged against her by the federal government, she was unaware of their specific locations or details.

In her petition, she asserted that it is her legal right to be informed about the cases filed against her, which she has yet to receive from the relevant authorities.

The petition was reviewed by Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim on Tuesday (today).

The second petition seeks transit bail, naming the federal government and other relevant departments as respondents.

Bushra noted that due to the government's registration of multiple cases against her, she intends to appear before the courts to seek relief.

However, she expressed concerns about potential arrests, leading her to request transit bail.

Interim bail extended to November 4

Previously, an Additional District and Sessions Judge extended Bushra Bibi's interim bail in the Toshakhana fake receipts case until November 4.

The court also granted her a one-day exemption from attendance, Express News reported.

During the hearing, Barrister Salman Safdar informed the court that Bushra Bibi has been unwell since her release from jail. The judge approved her request for exemption and extended her interim bail.

Safdar stated that he would present arguments on the bail applications during the next hearing.

The court has adjourned the hearing on the bail applications of the founder of PTI in three cases, as well as Bushra Bibi's application, until November 4.

Both the founder of PTI and Bushra Bibi have filed for bail in the Toshakhana fake receipts case. Additionally, the former Prime Minister has also submitted bail requests in two cases related to vandalism and protests

PTI's decision to join Judicial Commission awaits core committee confirmation and Imran Khan’s approval.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has formally decided to join the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, with nominated members to be selected from both houses of Parliament.

A statement was issued following a special meeting of PTI’s political committee, Express News reported.

The meeting included a comprehensive briefing on the Speaker of the National Assembly's letter regarding the opposition’s nomination of two members to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan.

The briefing explained that, the responsibilities of the 13-member judicial commission have been expanded.

The commission will now appoint judges to the Supreme Court, High Courts, and Federal Shariat Court. Additionally, it will monitor the performance of High Court judges and compile their annual performance reports.

The judicial commission is also authorised to propose suitable names for High Court judges.

Furthermore, it has the authority to establish benches in the Supreme Court and High Courts. A third of the commission’s members can convene a meeting, and decisions of the 13-member body will be made by a simple majority.

According to Clause D, a member's absence will not impact the validity of the commission's decisions; they will still be considered legitimate even if a member is absent.

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan is intended to be a long-term body, with the opposition’s two members playing a crucial role in its decision-making.

PTI’s political committee unanimously approved the proposal to join the Judicial Commission of Pakistan. This decision will be presented to the core committee for confirmation and then submitted to founding chairman Imran Khan for final approval.

There is full agreement that the names of the two opposition nominees for the commission will be officially announced after formal approval from pti’s founding chairman, Imran Khan.

The meeting also reiterated the party’s firm and principled stance on the 26th constitutional amendment.

Mehr Bano Qureshi revealed no contact has been made with Zain Qureshi since October 16

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member Zain Qureshi has gone missing, his sister Mehr Bano Qureshi confirmed, Express News reported.

Mehr Bano Qureshi stated that the family lost contact with him on October 16. The family is concerned for his safety, fearing he may have been abducted.

In a statement, Mehr Bano Qureshi expressed deep concern, saying, "Our family hasn’t been in touch with Zain since the morning of October 16. We are praying for his safety and hope he is in hiding as per the party’s policy, but I fear he has been kidnapped."

Mehr Bano added that their family has been facing intimidation, authoritarian pressure, and abuse for more than a year, aiming to break their principles and beliefs.

She also noted that, despite the challenges, her father, Shah Mahmood Quershi, has stood firm and continues to make sacrifices for the cause. She emphasised that they remain committed to their leader, Imran Khan.

Last week, Mahnum Kabir, the wife of Zain Qureshi, safely returned home, just hours after her sister-in-law Meher Bano Qureshi had claimed on social media platform X that masked men had abducted her.

Earlier, Meher Bano had posted that Mahnum was forcefully taken by masked men near their home. She described how multiple cars had blocked Mahnum vehicle and taken her away.

Meher Bano also stated, “Despite a year and a half of threats, they haven’t managed to break us, and now they’ve stooped to using these low tactics."

She added, "Our family's faith in Allah remains unwavering. He will guide us and Pakistan through this ordeal of fascism."

Decision to be absent from voting was announced in a statement following a meeting of the party's political committee.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to boycott the voting process in the National Assembly and Senate concerning the 26th Constitutional Amendments.

The decision was announced in a statement following a meeting of the party's political committee.

The PTI statement emphasised that the party would not be part of what it termed a "non-transparent" and "controversial" process of amending the constitution. It declared a complete boycott of the voting process in both houses of Parliament.

The political committee asserted that the current regime has no moral, democratic, or constitutional justification for altering the constitution. The statement accused the ruling coalition of imposing the "law of the jungle" through amendments, which the party believes undermines democracy.

In a press conference, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan expressed concerns over two party senators, Zarqa Taimur and Faisal Saleem, who he believes may vote against party policy. “I think our two senators are going to vote against the party policy,” he stated.

The PTI, however, continues to voice concerns about potential judiciary-oriented legislation, which includes provisions for a fixed three-year term for the Chief Justice of Pakistan and the establishment of constitutional benches.

The PTI's political committee reiterated its commitment to resist these proposed legal reforms. The party announced plans for protests outside the residences of lawmakers who participate in the voting process.

“We will hold sit-ins in front of the lawmakers’ houses who vote,” warned Barrister Gohar Khan, emphasizing adherence to party policy among PTI members.

Meanwhile, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announced that the draft of the constitutional package will be presented to the federal cabinet today for formal approval.

He noted that proposals from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman have been incorporated into the draft.

The federal cabinet is scheduled to meet at 2:30 PM to review the contentious 26th constitutional amendment. Following this, sessions of the National Assembly and Senate are expected at 3 PM and 6 PM, respectively.

Prior to the sessions, a meeting of the federal cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to take place, during which approval for the amendments will be sought.

She states amendment introduced by SC ruling regarding reserved seats will cause significant harm to the country

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr. Yasmin Rashid has expressed strong criticism of a proposed constitutional amendment, stating that it is being introduced due to a Supreme Court ruling regarding reserved seats and will cause significant harm to the country.

Speaking to the media during her appearance at the Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court, Dr. Yasmin remarked, "This amendment will destroy the judiciary and end justice in the country."

She further suggested that the actions of the government were prompted by a decision from Justice Mansoor Ali Shah.

Dr. Yasmin called the current government a 'puppet regime,' claiming, "These people want to eliminate justice in Pakistan, and their actions are evident to the public."

She referenced the November 2022 attack on former Prime Minister Imran Khan, stating, "Imran Khan's life could be at risk in jail, and if there is no contact with him, it raises suspicion."

She further claimed that 'violence against women was increasing due to the government's incompetence.'

"The police that should be preventing crimes are now pursuing us," she said.

Dr. Yasmin emphasised the importance of respecting foreign guests, stating, "We should focus on creating a separate bloc of Asian countries and establishing an alternative institution to the IMF."

In conclusion, she shared her personal experience, saying, "I have been in jail for 17 months, yet the prosecution has no evidence against me, and my bail is still denied."

She also mentioned being implicated in cases across various cities, feeling as though she is "some sort of superhero" who is present everywhere at once.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Iqbal Afridi has alleged that he was offered Rs400 million to support proposed constitutional amendments.

In a video message on Tuesday, Afridi, a member of the National Assembly, claimed, "I was offered Rs400 million to back the constitutional amendments. They were even willing to offer Rs800 million or more—up to Rs1 billion. But I took an oath during the elections to always speak the truth, and I swore allegiance to Imran Khan."

Afridi stated that he rejected the offer, saying, "I dismiss their money and proposals. I am a soldier of Khan. I have supported Imran Khan’s ideology since 1997-98, standing by him through countless sacrifices for real change."

He further emphasised his loyalty to the former prime minister, stating, "During the regime change, I withstood oppression, never fled, stayed silent, or sold out.

Today, I still stand with Imran Khan and reject this offer. I will support whatever decision the party makes regarding constitutional amendments."

A legal team led by Faisal Chaudhry is pushing for the swift recovery of missing PTI lawyer Intizar Panjutha.

Lawyers have ramped up their efforts for the recovery of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawyer and focal person for Chairman Imran Khan, Intizar Hussain Panjutha, who has been missing for several days.

A legal team, led by Advocate Faisal Chaudhry, arrived at the office of the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to push for an urgent response over the case.

The lawyers plan to meet Chief Justice Aamer Farooq in his chambers to discuss Panjutha's disappearance.

Panjutha’s disappearance has led to a legal petition in the Islamabad High Court, where his colleagues are pushing for immediate action. The court has already instructed authorities to provide a progress report on his recovery by today.

In addition to Faisal Chaudhry, the delegation included High Court Bar Secretary Shafqat Abbas Tarar, along with advocates Ali Ijaz Butter and Mirza Asif. The legal community remains actively involved in the case, calling for Panjutha’s safe return.

The case has gathered attention in legal and political circles, with concerns raised over the prolonged disappearance of the lawyer, who is also PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s focal person. Despite ongoing legal efforts, Panjutha remains missing.

The Islamabad High Court has demanded updates on the progress of the investigation, with expectations for further developments in the coming days.

Few days ago,Islamabad High Court ordered the Ministry of Defence to submit a report regarding the disappearance of Intizar Hussain Panjutha.

The court held a hearing on the matter, during which the Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad appeared before the bench, Express News reported.

The lawyer representing Intizar Hussain informed the court that the last known location of the missing individual was F-6, after which his whereabouts remain unknown. Chief Justice of Islamabad inquired about the last known location, seeking clarity on the situation.

The IG of Islamabad responded that a special investigation team had been formed, led by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Investigation.

The last sighting of Intizar Hussain's vehicle was reported at Ayub Chowk, and it was noted that he had travelled to Faizabad with Advocate Mirza Asif.

Additionally, the IG mentioned that a mobile number had been identified, and they were attempting to obtain the WhatsApp location through the Intelligence Bureau.

He stated that the vehicle was last seen at Ayub Chowk, while the advocate's statement indicated that Panjoth was last known to be in Faizabad. The authorities are coordinating with other IGs to share information regarding the vehicle and the mobile number.

Main leaders arrested as party announces new protest dates

PTI protesters, responding to a call from their leader Imran Khan, hit the streets in Rawalpindi on Saturday, igniting intense clashes with police that turned the city into a battleground.

A sense of foreboding and tension hung in the air in the garrison city as the embattled party prepared for a protest in Rawalpindi with Section 144 in effect, echoing recent clashes that marred its power shows amid mounting obstacles.

Following a day marked by chaos and unrest, the PTI announced new protest dates, bringing its Rawalpindi demonstrations to a close after the confrontations with law enforcement.

In a bid to curb the protest, Rawalpindi police blocked entry points to the city, thwarting attempts by PTI workers to gather at Liaquat Bagh, which had been designated as the protest venue.

The party's plans shifted after Imran Khan indicated that the government would not allow them to hold their rally in the city and instead designated a location in the suburbs.

In an effort to stifle PTI's actions, the provincial government banned all public gatherings and deployed paramilitary forces throughout Rawalpindi.

The atmosphere from Murree Road's Mareer Chowk to Chandni Chowk descended into chaos as tear gas shelling and skirmishes erupted, disrupting the peace and sparking fears among residents.

Amid the turmoil, Punjab Police detained PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and leader Salman Akram Raja near the H-13 area while en route to Rawalpindi. Gohar was released shortly thereafter, but Salman Akram Raja remains in custody.

After their confrontation with police, Gohar stated that they were stopped at H-13 and instructed to turn back after a disagreement, effectively blocking their path to Rawalpindi.

In a show of solidarity, PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram delivered a video statement, congratulating party workers for their bravery in the face of police shelling and "straight firing."

He commended them for overcoming barriers and moving containers.

"I want to congratulate every PTI leader, worker, and stakeholder who made it to Liaquat Bagh today," Waqas said. He announced plans for large protests in Multan, Mianwali, and Faisalabad on October 2, stressing, "It is your duty to come out."

In a separate press conference, Waqas lambasted the Punjab government for the obstacles imposed on the PTI, alleging that expired ammunition was used during the shelling on the party's supporters and workers.

Clashes

The use of tear gas throughout the day caused considerable distress, with canisters falling into nearby homes and impacting residents, including women and children, who found themselves caught in the crossfire of political dissent.

Media personnel covering the protests were also not spared from the chaos, as they faced the brunt of the police action aimed at dispersing the crowd.

However, despite the government's heavy-handed efforts to quell the unrest, PTI members remained undeterred. However, around 7:30 pm, following instructions from PTI's central leadership, the protest officially came to a close.

After the announcement, PTI leaders and workers dispersed peacefully.

Once the protest ended, blockades placed on key routes, including the M1 and M2 motorways, were removed, and traffic flow returned to normal.

PTI's petition claims the ordinance contradicts a Supreme Court ruling and seeks its immediate suspension.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court, challenging the recently introduced Practice and Procedure Ordinance, which it claims violates a Supreme Court ruling.

The petition argues that the ordinance breaches constitutional principles and calls for its immediate suspension pending a judicial review.

In its petition, PTI stated that the ordinance, which deals with judicial practices, contradicts a ruling by a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa.

According to the petition, the bench had previously ruled that an ordinance could only be issued in cases of emergency. The PTI further argued that the ordinance could not be issued immediately after a parliamentary session, which it claims goes against constitutional guidelines.

The petition also alleges that the government is using the ordinance to involve judges in political matters, calling the move unconstitutional.

PTI has urged the court to annul the ordinance and suspend its implementation until a final decision is made.

After filing the petition, PTI leader Haleem Adil Sheikh spoke to the media, stating, "We are here today to challenge the amendment being brought forward.

The government is attempting to undermine the independence of the judiciary. We filed a similar petition against the Practice and Procedure Act in 2023, and we stood by the judiciary in 2007—this time is no different."

The PTI’s legal challenge comes amid growing concerns about the judiciary’s involvement in political affairs and the government's use of ordinances.

The party has vowed to continue its fight to safeguard the independence of the judiciary.

Previously, the Practice and Procedure Amendment Ordinance, 2024 was challenged in Lahore High Court in a petition requesting the court to declare it unconstitutional and all orders or actions taken in this regard to be set aside.

According to the petition, the Amending Ordinance was passed and given assent without adherence to the required legislative process.

Petitioner Munir Ahmed filed the petition through advocate Azhar Siddique praying the court to declare this Ordinance ultra vires in view of Articles 9, 10, 10-A, 14, 17, 25, 37, 38, 46, 48, 75 & 89 read with Articles 4 & 5 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973.

Petitioner’s counsel implored in the petition that all orders or actions taken pursuant this Ordinance are in violation of the fundamental rights provided in the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973.

He further requested the court to direct the respondents to share all the required information(s), details and document(s) under Article 19-A of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973.

He submitted that these amendments cannot be supported; therefore, the Ordinance should be withdrawn with immediate effect.

Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting, National Heritage, and Culture, Attaullah Tarar explained the key provisions of the ordinance.

Under the new regulations, the courts will now adhere strictly to a “first come, first served” principle. This means that cases will be heard in the order they are filed, eliminating any possibility of preferential treatment.

"The case that comes first will be taken up first by the court, and the cases coming after will be fixed according to their number," Tarar explained.

A significant change introduced by the ordinance is in the handling of cases under Section 184(3) of the Constitution.

Tarar stated that it is now mandatory to document why a particular case is considered a matter of public importance before it is taken up by the court.

A formal order must clarify whether the case pertains to public interest or involves human rights issues.

The ordinance also grants the right of appeal for any orders passed by the Supreme Court under Section 184(3).

In an effort to make the judicial process more transparent, the ordinance mandates that a complete transcript of the court proceedings, including judges’ remarks and observations, be prepared and made accessible to the public.

Another key feature of the ordinance is the establishment of a committee under the Practice and Procedure Act. The committee will be headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, with the puisne judge and a third senior judge serving as members.

An anti-terrorism court in Islamabad has issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. Meanwhile, the Peshawar High Court has imposed a directive prohibiting any arrest of Gandapur until October 5.

An anti-terrorism court in Islamabad issued non-bailable arrest warrants for KP Chief Minister Gandapur and several other PTI leaders. while also declaring PTI leader Umar Tanveer Butt an absconder.

Judge Tahir Abbas Supra rejected Ali Amin’s pre-arrest bail request, which was linked to a terrorism case involving the attack and vandalism at the Judicial Complex, filed by I-9 police station.

Ali Amin’s lawyer, Raja Zahoor Hassan, submitted an application requesting an exemption from Ali Amin’s appearance.

The court dismissed the request, noting that an absence request had also been made on September, 4 followed by Ali Amin's attendance at a rally on September 8.

Following his absence, the court denied Ali Amin’s bail application and issued non-bailable warrants for Ali Amin Gandapur, Wasif Qayyum Abbasi, Raja Rashid Hafeez, and Amir Mehmood Kiani.

Umar Tanveer Butt was declared an absconder due to continuous absences from court proceedings.

The court, however, accepted an exemption application from PTI leader Faisal Javed and adjourned the case until 3rd October.

Peshawar High Court orders no arrests for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM until October 5

Meanhile latesr during the day, the Peshawar High Court issued a directive prohibiting the arrest of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur until October 5.

The court’s written order from the previous hearing stipulates that details of all cases registered against the Chief Minister in federal and Punjab jurisdictions must be provided to the petitioner.

Additionally, if any arrest is to be made in connection with these cases, the court must be notified in advance.

The court emphasized that as the Chief Executive of a province, the Chief Minister is entitled to be informed of and provided with details about the cases against him.

This is in line with Article 10 of the Constitution, which mandates that individuals must be informed of charges against them.

The ruling also noted that the petitioner faces political opposition from the federal and Punjab governments.

As a representative of his province, the Chief Minister is not a fugitive and cannot be treated as such.

Copies of the order have been sent to the registrars of the Islamabad and Lahore High Courts.

Lahore High Court petitioned to nullify detentions of PTI workers

A petition was filed in the Lahore High Court seeking to overturn all orders of detention imposed on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers ahead of today’s rally in Lahore.

The petition was submitted by former provincial assembly member Zainab Umair, represented by Advocate Azhar Siddique.

The petition argues that the detentions of PTI workers and leaders across Punjab are unlawful and unconstitutional. It contends that these detention orders are contrary to legal and constitutional provisions.

The petitioner has requested the court to annul the detention orders immediately and issue a directive for the release of all detained individuals.

Tensions have escalated in Lahore, as PTI gears up for the power show.

Yesterday, PTI supporters engaged in violent confrontations with police after the arrest of several party workers on the eve of their scheduled rally at Ring Road, Kahna.

The unrest led to roadblocks, tyre burnings, and significant disruptions across parts of the city.

The incident occurred in the wake of a larger crackdown by law enforcement against PTI activists amid ongoing political turmoil in the country.

According to local sources, police detained dozens of PTI workers, transporting them to an undisclosed location in a prison van. In response, outraged PTI supporters converged on Mini Market in Gulberg, blocking the main road and setting tyres ablaze.

The protest quickly escalated, with demonstrators hurling stones at police vehicles, causing damage and shattering windows.

SP Model Town, Ahsanullah Tarar, stressed the importance of maintaining law and order in the city. "No one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands," he stated. "We are committed to ensuring public safety and will take all necessary measures to prevent further disruption."

Decision on PTI rally to be made after reviewing intelligence and police reports, says Lahore deputy commissioner

The Deputy Commissioner of Lahore, Syed Musa Raza, has requested a report from District Intelligence regarding the approval of a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rally in the city.

The decision to grant permission for the rally will be based on the intelligence assessment and recommendations from Lahore police, which has also been asked for its input on the matter.

The request follows an order by the Lahore High Court, which instructed the deputy commissioner to decide on PTI’s application for rally approval by 5:00 p.m. today.

The court also dismissed a separate petition seeking to prevent the rally, with a three-member bench ruling the plea as inadmissible.

The petition, filed by Advocate Nadeem Sarwar, was dismissed with Justice Farooq Haider stating that the petitioner was not an affected party.

The final decision on the rally will be made once intelligence and police reports are reviewed to ensure public safety and order.

As Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) prepares for a major rally in Lahore, the city’s police have been tasked with apprehending the remaining suspects involved in the May 9 incidents, when political unrest led to widespread damage and clashes.

The police have devised a comprehensive plan for the event, which will include strict security measures once the district administration grants permission for the rally.

To ensure maximum security, cameras will be installed at all entry points to the rally site, and officers stationed at these points will be equipped with photos and data of suspects wanted in connection with the May 9 incidents.

The police intend to monitor and record all activities at the rally, with a particular focus on identifying and arresting the remaining suspects.

This heightened security plan is part of the broader crackdown on individuals involved in the May 9 unrest, as the police aim to maintain order and prevent further incidents.

Amid heightened tensions, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced that it will proceed with its scheduled rally in Lahore on September 21 despite ongoing police raids, arrests and legal challenges.

Meanwhile, PTI's founding chairman Imran Khan in an informal conversation with journalists at Adiala jail, spoke about issue of government's permission for PTI to hold a rally in Lahore.

Imran claimed that refusal "will turn the rally into a protest. If the rally is stopped, the entire nation will protest at Minar Pakistan".

"For a year and a half, rallies have not been allowed in Lahore. Destroying democracy means ending freedom, and having a rally is our constitutional right," the PTI chairperson claimed.

The PTI founder further alleged the PTI's rally at Minar-e-Pakistan is "aimed at protecting democracy and freedom", and is endorsed by the Supreme Court, but is being blocked once again.

Authorities in Lahore have locked all gates leading to Minar-e-Pakistan ahead of a planned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rally scheduled for 21st September.

Police and related departments took the action, sealing off the grounds and restricting any form of public entry.

Heavy police presence has been deployed at each gate to maintain security and enforce the restrictions.

The PTI rally has not yet received formal approval from local authorities, and PTI has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court seeking permission for the event.

The PTI had announced its intention to hold the rally at Minar-e-Pakistan, but the administration has yet to grant permission.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore has sought an intelligence report before making a final decision on the rally's approval.

The situation continues to develop as the authorities and PTI engage in a legal and administrative process regarding the rally.

Islamabad court extends Aliyah Hamza’s interim bail as her lawyers prepare final arguments in the PECA case.

The District and Sessions Court in Islamabad has extended the interim bail of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Aliyah Hamza until September 23, in a case filed under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) for a controversial tweet.

The extension was granted during a hearing presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka.

Aliyah Hamza, along with her legal team, appeared in court, where her lawyers requested additional time to prepare for the final arguments.

They asked the court to set the next hearing for the following week, assuring that arguments on the bail application would be presented then.

The court accepted the request and adjourned the proceedings, extending Aliyah Hamza’s interim bail until September 23. The case revolves around a tweet that was deemed controversial, leading to charges under the Peca Act.

The PTI leader has maintained her innocence, and the legal battle continues as her defense team prepares its final arguments.

Last month, ex-MNA Aliya Hamza was released from Gujranwala Jail after her release orders were submitted.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) had ordered law enforcement agencies not to arrest Aliyah Hamza, in any new cases without the court's permission until August 29.

LHC's Justice Ali Baqar Najafi issued the ruling while hearing a petition filed by Hamza Jameel, Aliya Hamza's husband, who sought protective bail to prevent further arrests in cases she was unaware of.

The court also requested a report from the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan by the next hearing date, detailing any First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against Aliya.

Aliya Hamza has been accused of involvement in activities such as anarchy, chaos, and arson, linked to the May 9 riots following the arrest of PTI's founding chairman, Imran Khan.

As Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) prepares for a major rally in Lahore, the city’s police have been tasked with apprehending the remaining suspects involved in the May 9 incidents, when political unrest led to widespread damage and clashes.

According to police officials, all station house officers (SHOs) have been directed to focus on the arrest of these individuals during the rally.

The police have devised a comprehensive plan for the event, which will include strict security measures once the district administration grants permission for the rally.

Senior police officials indicated that divisional superintendents of police (SPs) would oversee the operation, with security measures solidified after the final rally venue is decided.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan confirmed on Wednesday that the rally will take place as planned.

The party's leadership has expressed determination to organize the rally, with or without the required No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from local authorities.

Aleema Khan, sister of PTI founder Imran Khan, described the event as a stand for democracy and the rule of law.

She said women from Lahore would lead the rally and pledged a peaceful protest despite potential police action.

Meanwhile, the police conducted raids across Lahore and other parts of the province, arresting several party members.

The PTI parliamentary leader in the Punjab Assembly, Ali Imtiaz Warraich, was briefly detained before being released.

Additionally, a late-night raid was carried out at the residence of PTI leader Aliya Hamza, who had recently been released on bail after a 16-month imprisonment.

In response, PTI filed a petition with the Lahore High Court (LHC), seeking protection from the arrests.

The plea, submitted by Sheikh Imtiaz Mahmood and Yasir Gillani, argues that the police are violating the constitutional rights of PTI members.

How can a constitutional amendment be passed by an incomplete parliament, asks Ali Muhammad Khan

Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ali Muhammad Khan has urged the government to release the party's founder, Imran Khan, from Adiala Jail before engaging in talks on constitutional amendments.

Speaking to the media in Islamabad on Wednesday, Ali Muhammad outlined PTI's stance, stating, "First, release Imran Khan from prison, then we can discuss constitutional amendments." He added that any approval of amendments must be accompanied by the restoration of the public mandate.

The PTI leader questioned the legitimacy of the process, asking, "How can a constitutional amendment be passed by an incomplete parliament?" He also raised concerns about the role of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) in the process, criticising PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. "It's unfortunate that the grandson is undermining the very Constitution his grandfather created," he remarked.

Hamid Khan, who was present during the conversation, reinforced PTI's position on the judiciary, stating, "We only recognise the Supreme Court. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah is the rightful chief justice, and no one else is acceptable." He added, "We will not let institutions be mocked."

Meanwhile, PTI's founder, Imran Khan, has made serious allegations, claiming that the government is pushing constitutional amendments to extend the terms of key officials, including Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court, and the Chief Election Commissioner.

From Adiala Jail, Imran alleged, "The government, having lost previous political battles, is now changing the Constitution to safeguard rigged elections and extend the terms of three umpires."

He further warned that if Chief Justice Isa is removed, investigations into the May 9 protests and alleged rigging in the elections would be initiated. "They are trying to dismantle my party," he said, adding that over 140 legal cases had been filed against him before the May 9 events, and efforts to remove him intensified afterward.

Khan expressed concern over the delay in investigating the May 9 incidents, claiming that if the new chief justice takes office, the truth behind the events will emerge. He also criticised the government for undermining Pakistan’s judicial and electoral processes, citing the delay in tribunal decisions on the February 8 election.

PTI chief and Bushra Bibi requested acquittal, leading the IHC to stop the trial court from advancing the case.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed the trial court to halt the final verdict in the £190 million case involving Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, following a request for acquittal. The court issued the order as part of ongoing proceedings in which the PTI leader seeks to have the charges dismissed.

The case was heard on Wednesday by a two-member bench, comprising Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb.

The court also addressed objections raised by the Registrar’s Office. Both parties requested that the trial court suspend its decision-making process until the appeals in the IHC are resolved.

The petitioners argued that the trial court should not proceed with the case while it is under review by the High Court. After hearing the arguments, the IHC barred the trial court from issuing a final ruling on the matter, granting the petitioners temporary relief.

The £190 million case has drawn considerable attention due to its high-profile nature. Imran Khan and his wife are seeking acquittal. The court’s decision ensures the trial will remain in limbo until the High Court concludes its hearings on the matter.

Previously, Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, filed an appeal in the Islamabad High Court, challenging an accountability court's decision to reject their acquittal plea in the £190 million corruption case.

The appeal, filed by their legal team led by Barrister Salman Safdar and Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry, contested the court's 9th September ruling.

In their petition, the couple argues that their acquittal was justified based on merit, claiming there is insufficient evidence to warrant a conviction.

The appeal calls for the accountability court's decision to be overturned, with Khan and Bushra Bibi seeking to be absolved of all charges.

A separate application for a stay order has also been submitted, urging the court to pause proceedings until the appeal is addressed.

The £190 million case has been a point of contention, with the couple claiming their innocence throughout.

The case centres around allegations of misuse of authority and personal gain through government decisions and donations.

The case is based on a meeting of the federal cabinet chaired by Khan in December 2019, during which a confidential deed was approved.

The NAB prosecution argues that Imran Khan did not fully disclose the facts to the cabinet members and pressured them into approving the confidential agreement without proper scrutiny.

According to the prosecution, Khan and his wife received illegal benefits from the deal, including 458 kanals of land in Jhelum, Rs285 million in cash, and other advantages under the pretext of donations to the Al-Qadir University Project Trust.

The couple is also accused of receiving 240 kanals of land through an associate, Farhat Shehzadi, furthering their personal gain.

Khan's defence, however, argues that the case falls outside the jurisdiction of the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) and that the cabinet's decision is protected under the amended law.

The former prime minister contends that the NAB has exceeded its authority by filing what he calls a "false and frivolous" reference against him, alleging misuse of his office.

Earlier this month, the accountability court dismissed the acquittal petitions filed by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, rejecting their argument that the case lacked merit.

The court's decision, presided over by Judge Nasir Javed Rana, was a significant blow to Khan, who is already facing legal battles on multiple fronts. His legal team, led by Barrister Salman Safdar, has now appealed the verdict in the Islamabad High Court.

Barrister Gohar hoping the ECP would not delay PTI’s intra-party election case any further.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has adjourned the hearing of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) intra-party election case until October 2, following a request by PTI for additional time to submit required documents.

A three-member bench, led by ECP Member Sindh Nisar Durrani, presided over the proceedings, with PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar representing the party.

During the hearing, ECP Member Balochistan questioned whether PTI’s intra-party elections were conducted in Chamkani, Peshawar, to which Barrister Gohar clarified that the elections took place in Islamabad. Gohar also sought a 10-day extension to finalise the documentation.

The Director General of Political Finance warned that if the results of the intra-party elections were not recognised, PTI could face an uncertain future without an organisational structure.

The bench instructed the DG Political Finance to provide further assistance on the matter to which he explained that under Section 208 of the Election Act, there should have been a five-year gap between two intra-party elections, with Barrister Gohar expressing his agreement.

Speaking to the media outside the ECP, Barrister Gohar stressed that PTI had conducted one of the most transparent intra-party elections and urged the ECP to retrieve relevant documents from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

He also criticised the ECP for focusing on PTI while allegedly overlooking the activities of other political parties.

Gohar voiced optimism that the next hearing on October 2 would proceed without any further hurdles from the ECP and reiterated PTI’s commitment to the process. Additionally, he announced PTI’s lawyers’ movement against constitutional amendments, marking the party’s continued efforts to challenge legal changes affecting its organisational framework.

Bail applications of other PTI leaders were postponed due to the absence of relevant judge

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has granted bail to PTI lawyer Shoaib Shaheen, ordering his immediate release, while the bail applications of other PTI leaders were postponed due to the absence of the relevant judge.

The bail hearing of PTI leaders Sher Afzal Marwat, Sheikh Waqas Akram, Shoaib Shaheen, and others took place before ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra. PTI MNAs were represented by lawyers Riasat Ali Azad and Adil Qazi.

The court inquired about Shoaib Shaheen’s physical remand, to which the lawyer responded, "Shaheen was remanded for eight days, but the remand was suspended on the same day. He, along with other assembly members, remains in jail."

Judge Sipra summoned the prosecution and the case record from Sangjani police station, after which a brief adjournment was called. Following the break, the investigation officer presented the record in court.

Since the prosecutor was not present, Judge Sipra stated, "The hearing for Sher Afzal Marwat, Saeed Shah, and Waqas Akram’s bail will be conducted by the relevant judge, but I will rule on Shoaib Shaheen’s bail today."

PTI lawyer Riasat Ali Azad pointed out discrepancies in the case, saying, "While Shaheen is accused of carrying a pistol, only a baton was recovered. The FIR mentions assaulting a police officer, but no medical certificate is attached."

Judge Sipra asked about the recovery of the baton, to which the lawyer replied, "Yesterday, before the Islamabad High Court, the investigating officer confirmed the recovery of a baton from Shaheen."

The court granted Shoaib Shaheen bail against a surety of Rs100,000 and ordered his immediate release.

The hearing for other PTI leaders’ bail applications was adjourned until Monday at 9am.

Judge Tahir Sipra is currently presiding over jail trials at Adiala Prison in place of ATC Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain, who is on leave. As a result, delays or postponements in hearings for the PTI leaders' bail applications are likely due to the absence of the designated judge.

Written order issued by Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz provides legal safeguard to PTI's Sher Afzal Marwat.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ruled that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Marwat cannot be arrested in any case without prior approval from the court.

The written order was issued by Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz following a petition filed by Sher Afzal, seeking protection against any secret charges or arrest.

The court has also issued notices to the Secretary of Interior, the Inspector Generals of Islamabad and Punjab, and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

These parties have been directed to submit para-wise comments in response to Sher Afzal’s petition.

The High Court further requested details of any cases filed against Sher Afzal Marwat, stating that according to his legal counsel, he fears being secretly charged and arrested. The court has clarified that no arrest shall take place without its explicit consent.

The petition was filed on behalf of Sher Afzal by lawyers Adil Aziz Qazi and Riyasat Ali Azad.

Previously, Islamabad police arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Member of National Assembly (MNA) Sher Afzal Marwat outside Parliament House following a National Assembly session.

According to Express News, a heavy police presence had gathered outside the Parliament House in anticipation. As PTI leaders exited the building, police took positions and swiftly moved to detain Sher Afzal.

A scuffle reportedly broke out between Sher Afzal’s supporters and the police during Sher Afzal's arrest. However, police managed to surround and apprehend the MNA, seizing his vehicle before leaving the scene.

Sources indicate that Sher Afzal was arrested due to legal violations committed during last Sunday's rally. The violations include disrupting the agreed route, breaching commitments, attacking Islamabad police, exceeding permitted timings, and delivering anti-state speeches.

A week before the rally Sher Afzal Marwat had declared that he would be personally held responsible in case any violence took place at the rally.

Journalists covering Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) boycotted a press conference held by the party’s leaders in protest against remarks made by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur targeting reporters.

During the press conference at K-P House in Islamabad on Friday, PTI leaders, including Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Shibli Faraz, lawyer Salman Akram Raja, and PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan, were addressing the media. However, reporters refused to provide coverage, citing concerns over being labelled as “touts” on social media.

“Our reporters’ photos are being shared on social media, and we are being called touts in status updates. This is endangering us,” journalists protested.

Salman Akram Raja assured the reporters that Ali Amin Gandapur would clarify his statement. “PTI founder Imran Khan has been informed of Gandapur’s remarks,” Raja added.

Despite this assurance, the journalists maintained their boycott, demanding an official explanation from PTI leadership.

The reporters also expressed frustration over the lack of communication from PTI leaders regarding the matter. “The PTI leadership has neither contacted the reporters nor provided any clarification about Gandapur’s statement,” they said.

Although Gandapur had yet to clarify his remarks, PTI leaders, including Raja, Hasan, and Faraz, promised that he would soon address the issue.

Until then, journalists vowed to continue their boycott of PTI press events.

Nawaz Sharif has been kept in check with a scare, otherwise he would have fled long ago, says PTI founder

Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has urged his party to prepare for a nationwide street movement, declaring that the fight is necessary to safeguard the country’s freedom.

Speaking to journalists at Adiala Jail on Thursday, Khan said, "Our movement is a jihad for democracy. I call on the entire nation to take to the streets to save our freedom."

Khan accused Special Judge Humayun Dilawar of being behind his and his wife Bushra Bibi’s imprisonment. "Humayun Dilawar was gifted land worth billions in return for his decisions against us. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's Anti-Corruption department holds all the evidence, but now the FIA has filed a case against them."

He also criticised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, alleging that Naqvi was rewarded with key positions including interior ministry and PCB chairmanship for his role in the government's crackdown on PTI. "Naqvi committed the worst atrocities against us, including the brutal killing of Zille Shah by the police. His body was dumped on the road, and an FIR was lodged against me," Khan said.

Khan further condemned Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, accusing him of protecting those responsible for PTI’s oppression. "Justice Isa stripped us of our electoral symbol and refused to hear our petitions on human rights violations."

The former prime minister expressed concerns over electoral fraud, saying, "The former Rawalpindi commissioner held the chief justice and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) accountable for the rigging, yet Chief Justice Isa will be given an extension."

Drawing a parallel to historical events, Khan likened the current political situation to that of Yahya Khan's era, accusing the powers that be of prioritising personal interests over the nation.

"Nawaz Sharif has been kept in check with a scare, otherwise he would have fled long ago. The entire nation must rise for a street movement to preserve our freedom," Khan urged, adding that the rule of law is essential for attracting investment to Pakistan.

He concluded by announcing that PTI’s street protest plans will be revealed soon, while also highlighting ongoing injustices, including the abduction of Saadullah Baloch’s wife and daughter. "They have entered the assemblies and arrested parliamentarians. This has never happened before, and my wife’s imprisonment is also illegal."

PTI demands release of members detained after last week's rally in outskirts of federal capital Islamabad.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, condemned the filing of terrorism charges over a delayed political rally, questioning, "Which country in the world files terrorism charges for a rally running an hour late?"

His remarks came during a heated National Assembly session, presided over by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, as opposition members protested.

The session saw PTI leaders demand the release of detained members and the issuance of production orders for their colleagues, who were arrested following a police raid on the parliament premises.

PTI members shouted slogans, calling for justice, while the opposition rallied behind them. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Khursheed Shah backed PTI’s right to speak, stating, "Let them speak, they are part of this house."

PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan also expressed concern over the arrests of party members from parliament by unidentified masked individuals, highlighting the importance of parliamentary sovereignty.

He claimed that discussions had been held in the Speaker’s chamber regarding the issuance of production orders for detained members, but action had yet to be taken.

In response, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar suggested reviewing security footage from the Speaker’s office to clarify the incident, stressing that the truth would emerge.

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan described 10 September as a "black day" for the parliament, condemning the arrest of PTI members by masked men.

He criticised the government's handling of the situation, questioning why terrorism charges were filed against party members for a rally delay and warning that such actions were detrimental to the state.

He also expressed gratitude to the police for their respectful treatment of detained members but insisted that their release was the responsibility of the authorities.

Multiple Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including high-ranking figures, have been charged with terrorism-related offences following accusations of violence against police officers during a rally in Islamabad.

The cases, registered at Sangjani and CTD police stations, involve serious allegations under the Anti-Terrorism Act and the “Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act 2024.”

According to an FIR obtained by The Express Tribune, PTI leaders including Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Shoaib Shaheen, Omar Ayub, Sheikh Waqas Akram, Khalid Khurshid, and other prominent figures, are among those charged.

The complaint alleges that the rally organisers were repeatedly informed that their No Objection Certificate (NOC) had expired and that they should disperse the crowd.

Despite multiple warnings from officials, the rally continued with anti-state speeches being delivered from the stage.

According to the FIR, at approximately 8:30 pm, law enforcement requested the organisers to halt the event, but the crowd remained. By 9:30 pm, Magistrate Asim Ali Zaidi and DSP attempted to approach the organisers behind the stage, where the situation escalated.

Several policemen, including Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Safe City Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police Muhammad Shoaib Khan, were also injured in clashes with PTI workers on Sunday.

According to the police spokesperson, these police personnel were injured due to stone pelting by PTI protesters and violent commotion by them.

The injured cops were shifted to hospitals for treatment.Towards the end of the rally, PTI supporters clashed with the police as the latter tried to disperse them.

Footage emerging on television and social media showed the police firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

According to the police, the local administration had designated a timeframe for the rally, but as it exceeded the hours, the police had to attempt to disperse the supporters, which led to clashes and the ultimate use of tear gas shelling.

Journalists stage protests in Senate and National Assembly after K-P CM labels them as 'sellouts' and 'brokers'

Journalists staged protests in both the Senate and National Assembly on Monday after Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur made objectionable remarks about the media during last night’s rally.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership swiftly issued an unconditional apology.

During the Senate session, journalists boycotted proceedings in protest against Gandapur’s speech. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar personally approached the journalists, offering an apology.

"We respect the entire journalist community," Gohar said. "I extend an unconditional apology for any hurt caused by the chief minister’s remarks, which were directed at only a few journalists."

He clarified that the speech was political, adding, "We have no intention of escalating tensions. If we wanted to take the law into our hands, we could have done so by now. There is immense public pressure for PTI founder Imran Khan's release."

Simultaneously, in the National Assembly, parliamentary reporters also boycotted the session.

Leader of the Opposition Omar Ayub, accompanied by Barrister Gohar, visited the media gallery to apologise.

Journalists however demanded a direct apology from Ali Amin Gandapur.

Later, Senators Afnan Ullah Khan and Aon Abbas Bappi also visited the press gallery to reconcile with the media representatives.

Last night, journalists had announced their intention to file a lawsuit against CM Gandapur following his derogatory remarks for them at the PTI rally.

The K-P CM while addressing the rally at Islamabad’s Sangjani made severe allegations, labelling journalists as 'sellouts' and 'brokers'. These statements were strongly condemned by reporters.

Additionally, journalists reported that PTI workers surrounded the DSNG (Digital Satellite News Gathering) vehicles present at the rally site during Gandapur’s speech. They expressed concerns for their safety, stating that the atmosphere created by the CM's address had put them at risk.

A three-member commission has been appointed to review access issues faced by PTI lawyers at Adiala Jail.

The Islamabad High Court (IHS) has established a commission to investigate the denial of entry to PTI lawyers at Adiala Jail.

The decision was announced following a petition filed by the legal team representing the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan.

Imran’s legal team argued that the denial of access violated his fundamental right to legal representation, regardless of whether the trial was held in jail.

The IHC echoed these concerns, describing them as a serious matter that impacted the right to justice.

The court noted the conflicting statements between the jail authorities and the lawyers, which necessitated an impartial review to ensure fairness.

In a written judgment issued by Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan, the court emphasised that it is crucial for the judiciary to appoint its "eyes and ears" to review the matter independently.

The commission, comprising three lawyers – Zopash Khan, Mubeen Awan, and Zohaib Gondal – has been tasked with overseeing the situation.

Each commissioner will visit Adiala Jail on court hearing days to ensure smooth access for the lawyers.

The commission will ensure that jail authorities facilitate security checks within 10 minutes and allow lawyers to drive their vehicles up to the inner gate of the jail.

The court also ordered that any issues faced during the visit should be immediately reported to the judiciary.

The court further clarified that lawyers representing under-trial prisoners must be allowed to meet their clients in private, ensuring that their conversations are not monitored.

The jail superintendent must also provide a sworn statement regarding using audio recording devices within the prison.

Additionally, the ruling specifies that these orders will apply to all legal cases involving jail trials, not just the case concerning Imran Khan.

Each visit by a local commissioner will be compensated with Rs10,000, and lawyers will be permitted to bring up to three assistants to the jail during their visits.

This ruling comes after a series of complaints regarding restricted access to Imran Khan’s legal team, raising concerns about transparency in the trial process.

Previously, the Islamabad High Court on Wednesday warned Adiala Jail authorities that it would move the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) trial of Imran Khan to another location if his lawyers continued to be denied access.

The court further ordered that any evidence recorded in the trial without the presence of Imran’s legal team would be deemed insignificant.

The resignation of Omar Ayub as the secretary general of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been approved by the party amidst ongoing restructuring and reshuffling within the party.

Omar Ayub, who also serves as the Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, submitted his resignation on September 5, citing the overwhelming workload associated with his multiple roles.

He expressed his gratitude for the approval and stated that he will continue to contribute to the party as a dedicated member.

In his resignation statement, Ayub revealed that he had previously resigned on June 22, but that resignation had not been accepted.

He attributed the decision to step down to the demanding nature of his responsibilities, which included managing party affairs, attending court hearings, and handling constitutional matters.

Party sources indicate that Salman Akram Raja has been appointed as the new secretary general, taking over Ayub’s former role.

The PTI founder has also restructured the party’s administrative functions, with Omar Ayub and Senator Shibli Faraz leading parliamentary affairs, while Raoof Hassan will head the party’s think tank.

Party lawmakers tasked with bringing supporters from their respective constituencies

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has finalised its strategy for the upcoming September 8 rally, as the party’s core committee convened under the chairmanship of Barrister Gohar on Friday.

According to Express News, the meeting addressed the country’s current political situation, including the implications of the recent NAB amendments verdict. The committee discussed the possibility of filing petitions against the Toshakhana reference filed against PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, following today’s verdict by the apex court.

Sources revealed that the core committee has devised a plan to mobilise workers and the public from across the country to gather at Sangjani for the Islamabad rally. PTI’s members of the national and provincial assemblies have been tasked with bringing supporters from their respective constituencies.

The committee also resolved to firmly oppose any bills or legislation related to the judiciary. Additionally, the possibility of ending cases against the party founder and Bushra Bibi, in light of the NAB amendments, was discussed.

The PTI core committee strongly condemned the recent police raid on a party candidate’s meeting and reaffirmed its commitment to holding the rally at Sangjani on September 8.

Yesterday, Islamabad’s district administration granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the rally, subject to 42 conditions. The permission allows the rally to be held at Paswal Road, Sangjani, with specific routes designated for participants to reach the venue.

Supporters from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa will enter Islamabad via the M-1 motorway, while those coming from Punjab will follow routes through the GT Road and Chakri Interchange.

PTI founder Imran Khan had called on the nation to defy any obstacles and attend the rally, stating, "Now, there will be a gathering in Islamabad on September 8. I am asking the entire nation to come out on September 8. Do not tolerate any obstruction on that day."

Former PM accused the authorities of lacking wisdom and leading the country towards turmoil.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has vowed to resist the "forces of tyranny," even if it means dying in prison.

In a candid conversation with journalists at Adiala Jail, Imran Khan criticised the country's decision-makers, claiming they lack wisdom and are leading the country into turmoil.

"I am being told to explain how I dared to stand up to the powerful. Let me make it clear: I would rather die in prison than bow to the modern-day Yazid," the PTI founder said.

He also expressed his concerns about the state of Pakistani cricket, describing recent developments, including Bangladesh's win over Pakistan, as disastrous.

He accused the authorities of making decisions without accountability and prioritising personal interests.

The PTI founder believes the country is on the brink of revolution and suggested that the events of 8 February should have been a wake-up call for those in power.

Further on, he condemned the treatment of his wife, Bushra Bibi, who has been in jail for seven months, claiming it was a means to teach him a lesson for standing up to the powerful.

The former prime minister also commented on the ongoing crisis in Balochistan, calling for local body elections instead of appointing figureheads as a solution to the province's issues.

He criticised the allocation of resources, arguing that money intended for the province rarely reaches those in need.

Additionally, he called for dialogue to address the issue of terrorism, arguing that solutions should involve intelligence, dialogue, and, if necessary, military operations.

He questioned why the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is blamed for his policies while the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) operates under similar conditions without accountability.

During the conversation, journalists raised concerns about a statement made by Imran's sister, Aleema Khan, accusing several reporters of ties to intelligence agencies.

The PTI founder assured them he would address the matter with her, reaffirming his trust in the reporters.

PTI leader cites Pakistan’s whitewash by Bangladesh, blaming poor leadership and appointments for the team’s decline.

Imran Khan, the founding leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has warned of a nationwide protest movement if any attempts were made to undermine the authority of the Supreme Court.

Speaking informally with journalists at Adiala Jail after attending a hearing in the 190 million pound reference case, Imran criticised efforts to weaken national institutions, stating, “The institution belongs to everyone, not just the army chief.”

Imran expressed concern over the appointment of “corrupt and incompetent individuals” to key positions, arguing that such decisions were damaging the nation.

He cited the Pakistan cricket team’s recent whitewash by Bangladesh as an example, blaming poor leadership and appointments for the decline of the sport.

He also raised concerns about delayed court rulings, particularly regarding the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendments, which he believes are being postponed until a verdict is reached in his reference case.

The PTI founder pointed out that several high-profile cases involving former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and incumbent Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with President Asif Zardari, are stalled due to the pending NAB ruling.

Imran Khan further alleged that there were attempts to close down the Al-Qadir University, stressing that while it would not affect him personally, the closure of Shaukat Khanum Hospital would greatly impact the public.

The former prime minister reiterated that the Supreme Court remains one of the last institutions representing the country's integrity, and any effort to destroy it would be met with nationwide protests.

PTI founder petitions to stay in civilian custody for trial, seeking to avoid military court in May 9 cases.

Incarcerated former premier and founding chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to prevent his transfer to military custody for trial in cases related to the events of 9 May.

The petition, filed by his lawyer, Uzair Karamat Bhandari, seeks to ensure that Imran remains under civilian jurisdiction.

The application names several government officials as respondents, including the Secretary of Law, Secretary of Interior, Inspector Generals of Islamabad and Punjab, the Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and the Inspector General of Prisons.

The plea requests the court to restrain authorities from handing Imran over to military custody and to ensure his trial remains within the civilian judicial system.

Yesterday, Imran expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue, stating that discussions will take place only with those who make the decisions.

During a conversation with journalists at Adiala Jail, Imran Khan remarked that May 9 is their "insurance policy."

He further claimed that if May 9 is disregarded, the government and its politics will come to an end.

He suggested forming a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9.

"Whenever the topic of negotiations arises, they start making noise about May 9. We are always ready for talks. We will speak with those who make the decisions," he added.

Imran Khan also mentioned that his potential appointment as Chancellor of Oxford University would be a matter of pride for Pakistan.

However, he stated that even if he doesn't become Chancellor, it wouldn't be an issue.

Earlier on July 25, incarcerated and beleaguered former premier had filed a petition against his potential handover to military custody, arguing that detainees involved in the events of May 9 should remain under the jurisdiction of civilian courts, and sought an injunction to this effect.

The petition was submitted by Imran's lawyer, Uzair Karamat, to the Lahore High Court (LHC). The federal government and the Inspector Generals (IGs) of all four provinces have been made respondents in the case.

Imran stated that a false narrative had been constructed, accusing him of inciting protests at the General Headquarters (GHQ).

Senator Murtaza says party will not align with PTI’s current demos

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Senator Kamran Murtaza said on Sunday that his party plans to stage its own protests on issues of its choosing but will refrain from participating in demonstrations organised by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Speaking to a private news channel, Senator Murtaza described recent meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari as “social” rather than political.

“There were political conversations definitely, but you could call this more of a social meet than a political one,” he noted.

Murtaza clarified that during these discussions, JUI-F made it clear to PTI the extent of their cooperation.

The meetings, which included PTI leaders such as Senator Shibli Faraz, Lawyer Gohar Khan, and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, were used to delineate the boundaries of their collaboration.

“We have told them some things with clarity as to how far we would go with them and to what end we would not,” he said.

JUI-F’s position remains that while they will engage in protests on their own terms, they will not align with PTI’s current demonstrations.

“The party (JUI-F) would protest on the streets on their issues but, for the time being, they won’t be a party to another party’s protest,” Murtaza affirmed.

Earlier, on August 23, PTI leaders visited JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to discuss cooperation on an “issue to issue and agenda to agenda” basis. This was followed by another meeting between the parties.

As tensions increased, both PM Shehbaz and President Asif Ali Zardari made separate visits to Fazl, who had declared a “solo flight” against the government.

Zardari's visit came a day after Fazl reportedly agreed with PTI to formulate a joint strategy, while Shehbaz’s visit aimed to dissuade Fazl from joining any anti-government agitation.

PTI leader expresses optimism that the ongoing deadlock between PTI and the army will soon be resolved

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson Raoof Hasan has expressed optimism that the ongoing deadlock between PTI and the army will soon be resolved, stating it is in the best interest of the state.

In an interview with Voice of America (VoA), Hasan emphasised the need to end the standoff and called for immediate dialogue between PTI and the military. “The deadlock should not continue any longer,” he said.

Hasan argued that achieving political stability in Pakistan requires recognising PTI’s mandate, either through judicial decisions or fresh elections. He clarified, “PTI does not seek to involve the army in politics, but engaging in dialogue with the military is necessary, as they currently hold significant power in the country.”

The PTI spokesperson proposed that a judicial commission investigate the events of May 9, and assured that if any wrongdoing is found, the party would issue an apology.

Hasan acknowledged that some PTI leaders maintain personal contacts within the army, which he believes could facilitate future negotiations.

He also disclosed that PTI founder Imran Khan has authorised Mahmood Achakzai to negotiate with other political parties and, if needed, with the army.

Criticising the current government, Hasan claimed it has failed to influence the judiciary, highlighting that the government cannot function effectively without judicial support. He also noted a growing movement for judicial independence within the country.

Addressing allegations of contacts with anti-national elements, Hasan challenged the information minister to provide evidence of such claims, firmly denying any involvement.

Looking ahead, Hasan announced that PTI would launch a nationwide movement starting on September 8, with planned rallies in major cities, regardless of whether they receive official permission.

He further stated that more political parties are joining PTI’s alliance, noting that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) has agreed to collaborate on a common strategy.

The recent meeting between PTI delegates and JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman was described as positive, with discussions expected to continue at the bilateral level.

Defence minister stands against PTI negotiations; denies mediation role.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has expressed his opposition to engaging in negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

During a key advisory meeting of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) held under the chairmanship of Nawaz Sharif at the party secretariat in Model Town, Lahore, Asif made his position clear.

Responding to media queries after the meeting, Asif stated, “I am not in favour of talks with PTI.”

He further clarified that he is not part of any team involved in negotiations with PTI through Mahmood Achakzai.

Recent media reports suggest that the Pakistan Muslim League (N) has been in contact with Mahmood Khan Achakzai to explore indirect negotiations with PTI, with the party leadership assigning Rana Sanaullah, the Prime Minister’s advisor on political affairs, to engage with Achakzai for this purpose.

Achakzai, representing PkMAP, was elected in April as head of an alliance—the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ain—also comprising the PTI, the SIC, the MWM, and the BNP-M. The PTI had later announced expanding the alliance to include all opposition parties.

However, Asif distanced himself from these efforts, reiterating his opposition to such negotiations.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has declared Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Zulfiqar Ahmed as the winner in the NA-79 constituency following a recount, issuing an official notification on Friday.

This result reduces Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) seats in the National Assembly by one.

The recount in the NA-79 Gujranwala constituency saw PML-N’s Zulfiqar Ahmed emerging victorious, further decreasing PTI’s presence in the National Assembly.

According to the ECP’s notification, Zulfiqar Ahmed secured victory after the recount, defeating PTI-supported candidate Ahsanullah Warraich. The recount showed Ahmed with 95,604 votes, while Warraich received 92,581 votes.

The recount also revealed that the total number of rejected votes in the constituency amounted to 23,845. PML-N’s Zulfiqar Ahmed won with a margin of 3,023 votes.

PTI secretary general warns of strong protests if any legislation on this matter is introduced in National Assembly

Opposition leader in National Assembly and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General, Omar Ayub Khan, has called on the government to immediately announce the name of the new chief justice, replacing CJP Qazi Faez Isa, amid specualtions of a possible tenure extension.

Addressing the National Assembly on Monday, Ayub stressed that the government should promptly reveal the new chief justice's name in the current circumstances. He warned of strong protests if any legislation on this matter is introduced.

Ayub demanded that the law minister clarify the situation regarding the appointment of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. In response, Federal Minister for Law, Azam Nazeer Tarar, provided an explanation to the assembly.

Minister Tarar stated that, under the existing Constitution and laws, a senior judge from the high courts could be appointed as chief justice by the Judicial Commission and Parliamentary Committee. He noted that a judge from the Lahore High Court, ranked fifth in seniority, had been appointed Chief Justice by the Judicial Commission.

According to Tarar, the 18th Amendment mandates that the most senior judge be appointed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. “The matter of appointing the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court can only proceed in accordance with the Constitution,” he said.

Omar Ayub also thanked Speaker Ayaz Sadiq for issuing production orders for Haji Imtiaz Chaudhry, allowing him to attend the session. "This is a commendable tradition, and I want to praise Ayaz Sadiq for it," Ayub remarked.

The opposition leader condemned the recent terrorist activities in Punjab’s Kacha area and called for the dismissal of the Punjab Inspector General of Police. Ayub also announced that the PTI would hold a grand public rally on September 8, regardless of the circumstances.

Sources in the ruling coalition had earlier revealed that some crucial legislation is likely to be passed by the PML-N government with the support of its allies in the current sessions.

On Thursday, following the Shehbaz-Bilawal meeting, the sources had revealed that the government is bringing some important legislation Monday onwards. However, without sharing details about it, it was said that the PPP was taken into confidence for its support in parliament.

The sources said that the ruling coalition is busy contemplating that the retirement age of all superior courts' judges should be extended by two years to decrease the budget of pensions.

The Shehbaz-Bilawal meeting had also come amid reports that the government was envisaging constitutional amendments to extend Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa's tenure.

They said that the legislation will not be CJP-specific but changes regarding the retirement age will be introduced as an "economic necessity" and that will ultimately have an impact on many, including judges, among others. A member of the ruling coalition, however, differed from the information, saying it's "not possible" as any such thing "requires constitutional amendment".

The comment stems from the fact that the government currently doesn't have the required number in the National Assembly to amend the Constitution. The situation had changed after the membership of 23 MNAs elected on reserved seats was suspended. They were elected on reserved seats after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had refused to give them to the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and distributed among other parties.

The PTI, which is sitting in the parliament under SIC banner, had taken the matter to the Supreme Court, which declared through a majority judgment on July 12 that PTI was a parliamentary party and entitled to get reserved seats.

Since the members of the ruling coalition are mostly tight-lipped about the upcoming legislative business, the capital was rife with all kinds of speculations ranging from CJP's extension to ECP giving back seats to the ruling coalition as the newly-passed election law bars it from giving the seats to PTI-SIC.

Despite some disagreeing with the rumors making rounds, no one categorically denied if things were not moving in this direction. "No such thing in my knowledge," was the usual response by members of the ruling party when asked to comment on the situation.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has stated that he has no contact with the establishment, while clarifying that any future discussions will be conducted only if it was in the nation's interest.

Speaking informally to the media after a court hearing at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail regarding the £190m case, Imran highlighted the critical need for robust institutions in Pakistan.

He remarked, "Only sheep and goats can be controlled with sticks, not humans. What they are doing is suicide."

Imran expressed his belief that the actions being taken by the authorities are detrimental to the country's stability.

Imran also commented on his current conditions in jail, noting the harsh treatment he is receiving, stating, "I have been placed in a room like an oven, yet I seek no relief."

He expressed concerns about the living conditions of his wife, Bushra Bibi, saying that rats have infested her room, even falling from the ceiling as she prays.

Additionally, Imran criticised the leadership of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), questioning the qualifications of Mohsin Naqvi, who he claims was appointed despite being implicated in a 2008 NAB case.
