Data reveals alarming rise in street crimes, with 16,000+ motorcycles, 737 vehicles lost in 5 months

Street crime, vehicle theft, and violent incidents continue unabated in the volatile metropolitan city, with alarming figures reported for the first five months of the current year, according to data released by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).

The statistics show that during this period, Karachiites were deprived of 737 vehicles worth millions of rupees, while 16,031 motorcycles were either snatched or stolen across the metropolis.

Street criminals also remained active, snatching a total of 7,427 mobile phones from people in various incidents reported during the first five months of the year.

The data further reveals a disturbing trend in violent crime, with 232 people losing their lives in incidents of murder and targeted violence during the same period. Moreover, the CPLC recorded 71 cases of extortion and three cases of kidnapping for ransom.

The CPLC has also released detailed figures for the month of May alone, showing that 20 vehicles were snatched and 106 stolen, while 445 motorcycles were snatched and 2,240 stolen during the month.

Mobile phone snatching remained widespread in May, with muggers taking away 1,860 mobile phones from Karachiites. The month also saw 56 killings, alongside 10 reported cases of extortion and one bank robbery. However, no cases of kidnapping for ransom were reported during May.

Overall data for the five-month period indicates that out of the 737 vehicles lost, 99 were snatched while 638 were stolen. Similarly, of the 16,031 motorcycles, 2,223 were snatched and 13,808 stolen, reflecting the scale of two-wheeler theft in the city.

Officials and observers continue to express concern over the persistence of street crime, particularly mobile phone snatching and motorcycle theft, which remain the most frequently reported offences affecting ordinary citizens.

The rising crime figures belie police claims that the law and order situation is improving while underscoring ongoing challenges for law enforcers in curbing street crime and ensuring public safety in the metropolis.

Around 40,000 vehicles have been blacklisted under the faceless e-ticketing system in the metropolis, as officials prepare to launch a city-wide crackdown from July 1.

As per details, the action will be jointly carried out by the Traffic Police and Excise Department against vehicles placed on the blacklist due to various documentation and compliance issues.

Officials said vehicles whose ownership has not been transferred to the current users have also been included in the blacklist. Such vehicle owners have been directed to immediately update and correct their records to avoid enforcement action.

Officials further stated that vehicles with incomplete documentation or incorrect registered addresses will also come under scrutiny during the upcoming operation.

In addition, legal action has been announced against vehicle owners who have failed to clear e-ticketing fines and other government dues. Traffic police have warned citizens to clear all outstanding liabilities before July 1, failing which their vehicles may be impounded during the crackdown.

The list of blacklisted vehicles has been made available on the official portal trax.sindhpolice.gov.pk, where citizens can check their vehicle status by entering either the registration number or CNIC. Citizens have been urged to ensure timely transfer of ownership and correction of any discrepancies in official records to avoid complications.

Police have further cautioned that owners of blacklisted vehicles may face fines, legal notices, and enforcement action if violations persist.

Another court defers bail decision for alleged facilitators

A local court order the investigation officer (IO) on Tuesday to submit an interim challan in the high-profile case involving alleged "Cocaine Queen" Anmol, alias Pinky, while another court deferred its decision on bail applications of her alleged facilitators.

The judicial magistrate for District South, while hearing the murder case registered against Pinky, directed the IO to submit the interim challan on Tuesday.

During the hearing, the IO sought additional time, stating that the challan had been forwarded to senior police officials for approval and would be submitted once cleared. The court granted time, while reiterating its direction for submission of the interim challan within the stipulated deadline.

According to the prosecution, the scrutiny of the challan has already been completed and the document has been handed over to the IO. The case has been registered at Baghdadi police station on the complaint of Sheroz, a resident of the Lines Area.

Separately, the district and sessions judge for District South once again deferred the verdict on bail applications filed by alleged facilitators of Pinky. During the hearing, the IO submitted forensic reports of WhatsApp chats and video communications allegedly linked to the accused.

The court adjourned the matter and postponed the decision on bail until June 10.

Deputy District Public Prosecutor Arif Saitai opposed the bail pleas, stating that accused Zeeshan had declared a monthly income of Rs50,000, while bank account records revealed transactions worth millions of rupees.

He further argued that the accused, Sohail-ur-Rehman and Zeeshan-ur-Rehman, are facilitators of Pinky and do not deserve bail.

Court dismisses appeal, says family court decision based on evidence and valid legal grounds

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has upheld a family court decision in a case related to dowry and jewellery, dismissing the appeal filed against the lower court's ruling and ordering the return of dowry items to the petitioner.

Justice Hassan Akbar of the SHC issued a written order on the appeal, observing that the family court had rightly evaluated the evidence and record before reaching its conclusion.

According to the court order, the parties were married in 2002, and at the time of marriage, dowry items, jewellery, and other valuables provided by the woman's parents remained in the possession of the husband and his family.

The petitioner stated that her jewellery had been placed in a bank locker registered in the name of her husband and mother-in-law. She further maintained that she left the house in 2006 along with her two sons, while the husband divorced her in 2007. The husband, in his written reply, described the dowry list as fabricated; however, he partially acknowledged the list and agreed to return non-gold items. The court observed that a party cannot simultaneously accept parts of a list while denying the rest as false.

Several private schools in Kotri City and Site areas remain open despite the Sindh government's heatwave alert, as the Directorate of Private Schools has failed to enforce its own orders for summer vacations.

Parents said managements are pressuring them to buy uniforms, books, copies and other items from school premises, while children are being called to classes in extreme heat.

The directorate has been unable to rein in private schools in the Sindh chief minister's district. Despite clear government directives, schools in Gharibabad Colony, Qalandarabad Colony, Liaquat Road, Sikandarabad Colony, Nango Line, Khuda Ki Basti, Khurshid Colony and Site Kotri are still conducting classes.

Teachers at Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) boycotted examinations on the first day of their protest on Monday, demanding accountability of the vice chancellor and release of pending salaries and pensions.

As per teachers' associations, faculty at both Abdul Haq Campus and Gulshan-e-Iqbal Campus staged the boycott over non-payment of salaries and pensions. Exams were disrupted in 34 out of 38 departments, with most papers cancelled due to unavailability of invigilators.

The joint call by Abdul Haq and Gulshan-e-Iqbal campus teachers' associations brought teaching and examination activities to a near standstill, and administration faced severe difficulties in arranging invigilation. Teachers demanded immediate release of two months' pending salaries and four months' pension arrears. They also called for restoration of house ceiling allowance suspended for 25 months and medical facilities that remain suspended.

Both campus associations appealed to the university chancellor, president, education minister and HEC chairman to intervene and initiate accountability of incumbent VC Prof Dr Zabta Khan Shinwari during his tenure.

District South drafted anti-narcotics policy proposing to declare academic institutions drug-free, vape-free zones

District South has drafted an anti-narcotics policy proposing to declare all schools, colleges and universities drug-free, tobacco-free and vape-free zones to curb rising drug use among students.

DIG South Syed Asad Raza prepared the draft titled "Youth Protection, Safe Future" and sent it to educational institutions for consultation and approval.

The policy outlines practical steps to protect students from drugs, vaping and tobacco products. Under the draft, student screening and testing will be allowed with parental consent. In suspected cases, guidance, rehabilitation and parental involvement will be made mandatory instead of immediate punishment.

A positive drug test in the initial stage will be treated as a welfare and rehabilitation issue, not a disciplinary offence. The draft recommends establishing anti-drug committees in every institution with the principal, counsellor, teachers, parents and law enforcement representatives as members.

It proposes a zero-tolerance policy against the sale, supply and promotion of narcotics on campuses. Within legal limits, searches of student desks, lockers and personal belongings will also be permitted.

The policy calls for regular awareness seminars, workshops and lectures for students. Special monitoring of drug supply through social media and online platforms is also suggested, along with enhanced information sharing between educational institutions and police. A targeted crackdown on drug dealers and criminal elements operating near schools and colleges has been ordered.

Protection of student privacy and confidentiality of information has been made a core principle of the policy. Parents will be required to submit an anti-drug declaration at the time of admission. DIG South Syed Asad Raza said the objective is not to punish students but to ensure early detection, treatment and rehabilitation. "The aim is to provide the young generation with a safe and healthy future," he said. The draft is now under review by schools and universities in District South before final approval.

Two persons were killed and at least seven others, including three women and a foreign national, were injured in two separate road accidents on Sunday, police and rescue officials said.

In the first incident, a high-speed collision between two vehicles on Khayaban-e-Bahr in DHA Phase VI within Darakhshan police limits, resulted in the death of a man and injuries to five others.

Police said the accident occurred when two speeding cars collided, leaving 40-year-old Shehzad dead on the spot. The injured were shifted to JPMC) via Edhi and Chhipa ambulances.

The injured included 22-year-old Bilal, 25-year-old Aini, 20-year-old Alishba, 45-year-old Maxim, a foreign national believed to be associated with the Russian Consulate, and an unidentified 35-year-old man. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage in the crash.

PS Darakhshan SHO Rashid Ali said preliminary findings suggested that the vehicle carrying the consulate employee may have hit the other car, adding that CCTV footage was being obtained to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Rescue officials said the deceased, Shehzad, was a driver by profession and a resident of Gizri. He was reportedly ferrying passengers from Khadda Market towards Shahbaz Commercial at the time of the accident.

In a second incident, a van overturned and crashed into a roadside pole near Lyari Expressway within the limits of Pak Colony police station, killing one person and injuring two others.

Police said the accident occurred when the vehicle lost control while attempting to save a motorcyclist and struck the pole.

As a result, 25-year-old Tufail died on the spot, while two others - identified as 25-year-old Junaid and 35-year-old Iftikhar - sustained injuries and were shifted to Civil Hospital.

PS Pak Colony SHO Faisal Gul said the deceased was the driver of the vehicle. He added that further investigation was underway and efforts were being made to determine the identities and residential details of those involved.
