seems ‘chadar less’ is a new fashion in Pakistan.Educated class is increasingly becoming more and more westernized and instead of adopting western values like innovation, honesy, punctualality etc we, as urban Pakistanis, are more intrested in to copy their looks. Learn English, watch Hollywood, enjoy chinese but please for God sake don’t abandon your own culture.

since when did wearing a chadar guarantee a person having values, or made them continue following culture? feudal men love wearing long wide chadars, but they also beat up men and women who work for them….does that make them better humans just because they wear chadars? or is that cultural too?

Well I just want to say that Express tribune has adopted western values too. I can see honesty, reality in ONLY this paper. I am not a big fan of newspapers. But I want to read this paper everyday….. to know what exactly going on in Pakistan. They are not sold to some political party or some people with authority and money. Some Blogs were amazing to read. They don’t care about anyone’s religion and faith which i appreciate allot. That is what our country is lacking “TOLERANCE” for everything. Yes i believe that what you said about ‘Chadder less” comment but don’t you think its their personal matter between them and God.

What’s wrong if I want to adopt Western culture? We deny our local Indian roots, but also talk about culture. There is no such thing as permanent culture. Culture evolves over time. In the globalized world, you cannot stick to your grand ma’s world view.

What is wrong with you…? Why do you expect and demand of others to follow your standards? Since you have trouble with women wearing ‘westernized’ clothing, I want you to stay true to your words and only wear shalwar kameez (or a thoub, since you probably consider arab culture our own too). After all, charity begins at home.

I beleive that the measure of health of the pakistani is directly proportionaly to the size of the readership growth of ET and similar media outlets. So more readers you gain, the more healthy and balanced the pakistani society becomes. Congratulations on your second anniversary and hope you have many more of these in the future.

    Congrats to the Tribune Team…

I happen to come across this website when I clicked on a OBL death related news and then got hooked to it..I find that most of your articles are straight forward and truthful especially in a country posing so much influence on press freedom..

If the mods are reading this, could I have a small suggestion??
I see many Indian and Pakistani trolls who try to engage in logicless debates based on unverified facts(fantasies) and blogs written by random introverts..Some of them write just to create animosity and fish for negative replies just to satiate themselves…

Whether Indian or Pakistani,Please allow people who wish to indulge in a logical discussion, not someone who spew hate-filled bile over the forum which damage relations even more..

I hope that Express Tribune be a place where Indians and Pakistanis indulge in healthy discussion and remove their biased perceptions over others

    Congrats ET!

One thing I can’t but note is that during your 2years how people, honest people like ALI, make a genuine heartfelt comment, we have the usual vigilantes shouting them down…

Surely everyone is guaranteed a right to express oneself without fear of prosecution?

Secondly, what has western technology got to do with anything? What a lame argument? That western technology was probably built in China (our buddy) and the origins of which were based on algebra – a Muslim invention!!! So who did what and when? Silly nonsensical argument to say the least…

Re culture? What Indian culture? India is a large area and there is nothing such as Indian culture! What I believe you have is Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujrati culture which are all quite unique and different to one another. What we have in Pakistan is almost a widespread, but with a common theme binding the cultures – Islam… Not being a mulla, but think about it; sati is not part of our culture, nor worshipping the cow (no offence to any Hindus).

    My office allows
    1.Salwar or Churidar
    2.Sarees
    3.Formal shirt and pant

    What it doesnt allow
    1.t shirts or tight shirts
    2.jeans
    3.Sleeveless dresses
    4.short skirts

We have guidelines for men too…No tight shirt,no faded jeans,no collarless t shirts,no cargoes or 3/4…

I see that these women are wearing what a normal office allows and Salwars are part of South Asian culture not western or English culture…

I’ve no problem working with women wearing these kind of dresses and I’m doing the same…
But then again, there are men in the world, who would stare even at a hijab clad woman….

But the bottomline is the HR Policy of the company, not what others think..If an employee doesnt violate the dress code of the company..Why should they heed the grievances of a random guy typing over the internet

Well done with the looks, the fashion, and poses; they’re very western. Except your not in the west, but in the east; yes, in the land of the pure!. A land that was dreamt to have an advanced culture (which includes your language; Urdu, that today is anything but the refined urdu you were meant to have) and civilization – which ostensibly never came about.
I appreciate your website, but the fact that 95% of the Pakistani population hardly speak or understand english gives us western readers a very dim view of the literate ‘English’ speaking class who tend to discrimiate against their illiterate and non-english speaking peoples. The false desire in Pakistani society to speak english, or shove an english word into every sentence with their urdu (which has become terribly cliched in Pakistan) does an absolute disservice to its countrymen.
Languages do evolve, but not at the pace or style as its happening in Pakistan. I suspect the use of English by the higher echolons of society is a means of keeping its people oblivious to their rights and supressing their indigenous culture and heritage.
You should take cue from countries like Japan, Korea, and your advanced neighbour like Iran who have developed their current prowess not by the means of ramming english in its everyday culture, but by using their indigenous languages to communicate efficiently with their people and better serve their interests.
