Veteran actor says she’s willing to perform anywhere in the world if that means an affected family gets shelter

In catastrophic times of more than half of Pakistan drowning in floods following torrential rains, people have come together to collect donations for relief. Veteran actor Meera, who's currently in New York, has decided to put her craft and talent to good use too. Staging a dance performance at Times Square, the Nazar actor requested viewers to raise money for victims.

Posting videos and images on her social media from her performances, Meera stated that she’s ready to perform anywhere in the world “as long as at least one bereaved family is able to have a roof over their heads.” With the multiple posts on her accounts and on several social media platforms, displaying snippets from her rather eclectic performances, Meera aims to raise awareness across the world of the intensity of destruction happening in multiple parts of Pakistan currently.

Dressed to the nines in a beautiful bright pink gharara and long kurta with heavy silver embroidery, the star explained the purpose of her performance to followers on Instagram. “Today I performed in New York to raise money for flood victims. My sincere request to Muslims everywhere is as follows: Please let's join hands and work towards this jointly. Let's just open our hearts and homes to the families of flood victims. Together, we can accomplish anything. Let's not belittle those that ask for assistance. Together, we can.”

Recognising her responsibility as an artist, she added, “Being an artist and the most sensitive element of the society, I am willing to perform for flood victims anywhere in the world as long as at least one bereaved family is able to have a roof over their heads. I am grateful to the dignified chief organiser Ayesha Ali and all the other organizers of the Brooklyn fundraising event for the special invitation and for providing me with the opportunity to participate in this noble cause.”

The actor had once again appealed against the marriage, claiming the Nikkahnama had been forged

After Meera appealed against a court ruling which declared the actor to be Ateequeur Rehman’s lawfully wedded wife, her request has been denied. Meera had stated in her appeal that she is not Attique’s wife, and that the Nikkah papers being used to prove otherwise are fake. She further added that he forged the documents to defame the actor. The appeal had been in process for the past three years, with the court finally reaching a decision, ruling in Attique’s favour.

In 2018, after a nine-year-long legal battle, Lahore’s family court ruled Meera to be the wife of Sheikh Attiqueur Rahman. The court had dismissed the actor's petition to bar Attique from calling her his wife previously as well.

In the earlier verdict, judge Babar Nadeem said that the Nikkahnama between Meera and Attique is authentic. This means that the two were, in fact, married. The court also stated that all the pictures and other evidence provided to the court were valid and the two were legally married.

It must be noted that earlier Meera told the court that the Nikkahnama and pictures were forged. However, the court rejected her claims. According to the 18-page judgement, Meera and Attique tied the knot in 2007, after which the couple also went on a honeymoon. In 2013, Meera also alleged that she was married to Captain Naveed.

The actor called out blogs dragging Meera through the internet for her failure to speak a foreign language fluently

It’s 2021 but trolls are still not over Meera’s English speaking skills and actor Zarnish Khan has had it.

Reposting a video of Meera from the Lux Style Awards, in an attempt to take a dig at her, a blog had written, “Uff yaar Meera ki English!” with laughter emoticons. Sharing the same on her Stories, Zarnish commented, “Yaar bas kardo weli awaam (Can you people cut it out already?)”

She then asserted, “I’m pretty sure all the people who make such memes or cut-out video clips are a bunch of idiots themselves, who probably can’t even speak Urdu fluently, let alone English.”

Zarnish reminded everyone that just because most of us can pass comments in the shadows, without ever having to worry about our reputation being dragged through the mud; does not mean we’ve earned the license to publicly shame people in the limelight.

“Just because you can hide behind the anonymity of a cyber-network, doesn’t give you a right to make fun of other people,” the Ye Dil Mera actor lashed out. “Maybe she [Meera] can’t speak well in English but is that a crime? How well do you know this language? Are you ready for an open challenge? I bet you aren’t!” She concluded by asking her followers to “stop being so shallow please!”

The video sees Meera struggling to say, “I’m very excited to be here, obviously it’s a big night today. I want to congratulate Lux Style Awards for completing 20 years, it’s an achievement. Men bohat khush hun aj (I’m really happy today).”

Recently, Meera was also being “threatened by land-grabbers,” and requested Prime Minister Imran Khan for help. She submitted an application to Capital City Police Office (CCPO) Lahore regarding a property issue. The actor has claimed that her property, which she alleges is worth billions, has been grabbed illegally. She has also requested Prime Minister Imran Khan to take action over the matter.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Meera said, “I am being threatened by Mian Shahid Mahmood, he is a land-grabber who is trying to illegally take over my family property after agreeing to live there as a tenant."

Suspects carrying firearms barged into premises

Lahore Police on Friday arrested at least five suspects over allegations of illegally occupying film star Meera’s family property.

A case has been registered in Ghalib Market. As per the FIR, the complainant Hassan Abbas said that they went to see their property situated near Minni Market.

A suspect Mian Shahid has prepared forged documents of it and occupied it. Five suspects identified as Nauman Khursheed, Mirza Asad Baig, Waqas Shahbaz, Sardar Ahmad and Amirzada carrying firearms barged into their place and tried to occupy it illegally when they were visiting their property.

Upon information police team reached, meanwhile, prime suspect Mian Shahid on seeing the law-enforcers fled from the scene.

However, other five suspects were arrested by police and firearms were also recovered from their custody.

The complainant further said that the valuables from their house were missing. “As I entered the room, I found out that ACER laptop was missing”, the complainant added. SHO Ghalib Market said that they thwarted the illegal occupation attempt at the plaza of Meera’s late mother and arrested the five suspects.

Read I was taken to a psychiatric facility and released after Sheikh Rasheed's call, says Meera

Two days back, Meera had approached CCPO Lahore and visited his office in this regard. In her application before Ghulam Mehmood Dogar, she had said that few suspects had prepared forged documents of the property owned by her mother.

She had alleged that it was an attempt of illegal occupation as the suspects had forcefully taken thumb impressions from her mother on forged documents.

She had complained that she had appeared at multiple forums to seek justice but to no avail. Dogar had taken notice of the issue and asked SP Model Town to take necessary action in this regard.

Another case has been registered on the complaint of the mother of Meera, Shafqat Zahara against allegations of occupying their house through illegal means by a suspect Shahid Mehmood.

Zahra in her statement said that their family had made a deal of the house situated in Defence with the suspect in return of 160,000 pounds.

He had vowed to transfer the amount in the account and in return asked to proceed for transfer of the house from DHA authority. The house was transferred to his name.

However, the suspect started making lame excuses and started using delaying tactics for the payment of the said amount.

When he did not make the payment they requested them to return their property but he did not. Meanwhile, Meera reached the CCPO office along with her ailing mother to thank them for their help.

She said that her mother was harassed and faced a life-threatening situation in her absence. She commended the efforts of the police against the land mafia and said that they were the real heroes.

Actor disclosed the Interior Minister got in touch with the Pakistani embassy in New York to get her out.

Meera, who recently went viral following reports of her being admitted into a psychiatric facility in the United States, has now responded to the rumours that surfaced about her mental health and her private affairs last week.

The star had previously, via actor Imran Abbas, rubbished claims of being mentally challenged. And now, in an interview with BBC Urdu, the Baaji actor has claimed she was in fact taken into a mental asylum upon visiting a hospital in New York for different reasons.

When asked what exactly went down at NYC’s Brookline Hospital, Meera said “I got vaccinated for Covid-19 from the institute and was getting my following tests done.”

She recalled being taken aback by the news that hit the internet after her routine checkup with the doctor. But is it true that she was taken to a mental asylum and is now being deported from the US? “It’s midnight over here at the moment and everyone at my place is fast asleep. I can’t talk in detail right now,” she responded in an attempt to dodge the question.

But in a following WhatsApp message, Meera revealed, “I visited the hospital because I was in depression and in turn, I was declared mentally challenged. My phone was also snatched and I was taken to a psychiatric facility. There’s a difference between madness and depression, which has to be understood. But people here locked me up. I spent an entire night screaming for help. No one came.”

She then disclosed that after her mother appealed to Prime Minister Imran Khan and Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed, a call from the latter made her release possible. “Mr Sheikh Rasheed got in touch with the Pakistani embassy in New York, which requested the facility to let me go,” she said. The actor also clarified that she was not being deported from the US, but was only leaving for Dubai to shoot for a Pakistani project.

Javed Sheikh, Meera recall carving their way into the entertainment industry on ‘Time Out with Ahsan Khan’

With the emergence of social media and everything available on it, knowing what’s trending, what to wear, where to eat and what to talk about comes in a package we don’t even stop to think about.

Today, one knows the styles, colours, haircuts and everything else that’s all the rage without even being a fashion buff. That begs the question how actors and models of older times, whose livelihood always depended on their appeal and appearance, kept tabs on everything. Moreover, how did some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry today start off their journeys?

“I stole Rs100 from my father, had three to four friends in Rawalpindi and we all decided to leave for Lahore to try acting. I was 12 or 13 years old and my dad had found out what I was up to,” veteran actor Javed Sheikh revealed on the latest episode of Time Out with Ahsan Khan.

“He and his friends then split up to look for us and eventually arrived at the train station. The train was about to leave and we were all so happy, from the Rs100 we had bought laddus for Rs2 and we were busy devouring them when my father’s hand grabbed me from behind and by the time he let he go, I was hanging upside down in my house and getting a beating,” he laughed.

Another guest on the episode was the evergreen Meera, who recently made headlines for allegedly being sent to a psychiatric facility in New York – a rumour that was rubbished later. Asked if she had always wanted to be an actor, she replied, “I wanted to be an actor since birth and I was very good at my studies too. But an achiever, no. I failed sometimes and still do.” But in love, did she fail or achieve, inquired Khan to which she said, “I fell in love, very hard, but I don’t know if I have won or lost.”

Sheikh revealed that his first girlfriend was French. “I met her in Karachi because her father was PIA’s station manager in Paris and she was on holidays here. I was a nobody at the time but I guess I was lucky that such a charming lady went out with me. But then, obviously, she left for home and called me there. Again, I needed money and my father had a Morris. I sold it for Rs5,000, got a ticket for Rs3,000 and went to Paris. I got a beating for that later too.”

But the veteran added that after that, he went to Paris five to six times upon being called by the same girl, who even provided him tickets. And that is where he groomed himself. He then enrolled in Alliance Francoise to learn French too. Till this day, the Wajood star handpicks the clothes of his heroines himself. Meera agreed, recalling the times she worked with Sheikh. “He tells the heroines everything, from the kind of hairstyle to the shoes and clothes.”

The conversation reminded Sheikh of this one time Meera was shooting for Chief Sab and arrived on set wearing the wrong clothes. “She was playing this rich girl who comes to meet her lover – who’s not as fortunate – in this basti. And she was dressed like she’s going to a club. I flipped and told everyone we can’t shoot today. The set was very far away from where we were staying in Istanbul,” he recalled.

“Meera vanished after being scolded and 20 minutes later, came back wearing what I had asked, which was a plain white tee and a jeans. Turns out, she had borrowed clothes from our neighbours because she was that dedicated and I was that angry. I loved that about her and she quickly did the scene.”

Asked about the many scandals she has been associated with, Meera said, “The biggest, however, includes a video, and a marriage. They are far from the truth.” Here, Khan asked, “Have you ever created a scandal to generate news on your own?” and she said, “Saari khabren automatically banjati hain [Everything turns into a news on its own]. Seriously, sometimes I wish I’d generate news myself,” quipped the actor.

On a lighter note, the host asked the Baaji star why the names of female actors are shortened or changed when male actors carry on with their actual names in the industry. “My real name is Irtaza Rubab. It was a big name so people felt Meera would be short and cute. I figured let’s keep it then,” she explained. “But who started calling you that?” inquired Khan. “Everybody,” Meera replied. “No, I think it was Jarrar Rizvi,” guessed Sheikh. “Yes, it was him,” Meera admitted.

In the tirade of questions, Meera also revealed her favourite male actors in Pakistan, starting off with Shaan and Moammar Rana, “Saleem, Humayun Saeed are also my favourites.” She explained she hasn’t really worked with Fawad Khan so she can’t say but called Sheheryar Munawar a “nice, decent guy who’s also her favourite guy.”

As of Wednesday, reports of Meera being admitted to a psychiatric facility in New York have been circulating

On Wednesday night, various reports surfaced claiming actor Meera had been admitted to a psychiatric facility in New York. When reached out for a comment, her mother confirmed that the claims were true. According to Shafqat Zahra, the Baaji star had not only been admitted to a psychiatric facility but was taken there by force. She shared more details in a video message.

“I received a call from Meera on April 5 and she kept crying," Zahra told The Express Tribune. "She was telling me that the US police id sending her to a psychiatric facility. She did not tell me why they were doing that, but said she repeatedly told them that she was an actor and not mentally ill.”

— Hassan Hafeez (@hassanarynews) April 7, 2021

Zahra said that she hasn’t heard from her daughter ever since and her in-laws are also clueless about where she has been taken. “We tried our best to find out the reason but couldn’t. So now I’d like to appeal to the government of Pakistan to do something about it. I have already appealed to the Prime Minister Imran Khan and Sheikh Rasheed,” she added.

However, Meera’s manager Muhammad Qasim, who is based in Pakistan rubbished the claims of her being admitted to any facility and explained why such ‘fake news’ could have surfaced. “Meera is perfectly fine, both in terms of her mental and physical health and she is at her home in the US,” Qasim told The Express Tribune. “It seems like Meera’s mother is spreading rumours to resolve a personal dispute and I have nothing more to add because she is, after all, her mother.”

Another family member told The Express Tribune that Meera is in fact in touch with her father and there is more to the story than what is being discussed on social media.

"Meera is in contact with her father Sarwer Shah, who is more dependable than anyone else in her family,” said the family member requesting anonymity.” These rumours are related to an ongoing property dispute between Meera and her family and you should keep in mind that she has on a number of occasions spoken publicly how her family loots her all the time.”

Another close family member told The Express Tribune that the actor had in fact visited a psychiatric facility in the US for her routine checkup and told her mother about it. But that’s it. “Now her mother is painting a different picture when Meera is in fact in touch with her manager, father, and sister. She is simply not taking any calls from her mother which might have made her make those such claims,” said the family member, also requesting anonymity.

Renowned director and friend, Jarrar Rizvi, who introduced Meera with the film Pyar ki Khatir, was confident that the rumour mill is once again ablaze because Meera’s family wants a lion’s share of her property. “It is clear that it is a land dispute and some elements are trying to declare her mentally challenged so they can claim what belongs to her,” Rizvi told The Express Tribune.

“I have known Meera all my life, in fact, I was the one who gave Irtiza Rubab her screen name Meera and I can say this with confidence that, once again, her family is maligning her reputation for personal gains,” said Rizvi.

Following this, actor Imran Abbas took to his social media and narrated the conversation he had with Meera herself.

"Meera called me this morning to clarify it to all of our media/social media that she is perfectly fine and there is nothing wrong with her mental health. Kindly don’t sensationalise the story and make fun of her. Calling someone mentally unstable is not a bloody joke," he wrote. "A person loses his/her credibility in society and moreover it can actually push her to be a mental wreck and make her take any extreme action. It can really harm her career and affect her adversely in so many different ways."

Livid that people were treating the sensitive news which - even if it were true - should not have been joked about, Abbas added, "None of us are perfect and we all have imperfections in one way or another. 'Perfection' is the word which only suits our Creator. She doesn’t need your sympathies or prayers to be fine. Kindly don’t show this fake concern by putting statuses. Let’s pray for our sick society, news channels and social media which can actually push anyone to commit suicide by their petty jokes and flimsy humour."

Post lockdown, performing art activities have now halted in the observance of Muharram

The coronavirus pandemic jammed the wheels of economy around the world and it may take a long time for several sectors to bounce back globally.

However, during the last six months, certain areas of work were allowed to operate with precautionary measures in Pakistan, except for the art and entertainment sectors. And just a few days have passed since the near five-month lockdown restrictions were eased across the province. But now, due to Muharramul Haram, entertainment activities have once again caved in.

With respect to the constant hampering, singer Shahida Munni told The Express Tribune that the financial crisis had encompassed all walks of life, but it would not be wrong to say that the most affected social group was of those belonging to the arts sector.

“Thousands of people are employed in other entertainment programmes including film, TV, music concerts, cinemas and theaters but now the situation is becoming overbearing.”

"The long lockdown has pushed us back many years," she stated. “The financial crisis has left the majority of artists in debt. The government needs to come up with solutions and provide alternative earning mechanisms for performing artists.”

Popular actor Meera also chimed in explaining how the unprecedented situation caused many artists, who were heavily involved in finalising their projects, to be left without payments midway. “And when a film that has been made to adorn cinemas is taken down only a few days after its premier, do you know how many millions of rupees are lost? People easily pass remarks saying that the film’s story, music or the performances of artists are not good.”

She reiterated how just like the lockdown infiltrated the rest of Pakistan's economic sectors, the field of arts and entertainment had also been affected. “And now after lockdown, entertainment activities have naturally ceased again due to Muharram," she claimed.

The Baaji star went on clarify, “Everyone knows that the artist community observe Muharram with great devotion and respect, the community arranges Majalis and Niaz at their homes. But this time it is impossible to do even that due to the financial constraints.”

"Therefore, the rulers needs to pay added attention to our community," she ended off saying.

Leading stage actor and dancer Nida Chaudhry also said that it would not be wrong to call the showbiz industry the most deprived sector in our country. “An artist entertains people all his life but he does not tell anyone about his own troubles and worries.”

The stage actor elaborated on how the government hadn't provided any releif to the performing artists despite the aftermath of the lockdown. “If the government makes theatre tax free for the next two years, how much damage will it do to the exchequer? Billions of rupees of taxes are waived for other sectors.”

Therefore, it wouldn't be wrong to pay a little attention to this deprived sector, she asserted. “We artists are also Pakistanis and we also have some rights. The circumstances have forced us to raise our voices. I urge the government to take practical steps to address the problems of this sector on a priority basis," she concluded.

The 'Baaji' star is one of 645 artists who will be provided Rs5000 by the authorities

Earlier, veteran actor Meera had applied for financial assistance with the Artist Support Fund, launched by the Punjab Information and Cultural Department. The actor had sought Rs 40 million, claiming that her financials were in dire straits.

Her request was previously subsequently denied by the authorities in question. The authorities have noted that at this point they can only offer Rs 5000-10,000 to the Baaji actor.

However, on Thursday, the application for financial assistance filed by the actor has been approved. According to sources, the Lahore Arts Council will provide Rs 5,000 to the Hotal star. It has been noted that Meera was informed about the approval of assistance Rs5,000 through a text message. A total of 645 artists are promised of financial aid in the first spell.

Backstory:

A meeting was held at Alhamrah Arts Council under the supervision of MPA Sadia Sohail Rana after the actor had written to the senior officials. It was during this meeting that the department unanimously decided that it can give no more than ten thousand rupees to the actor. It was also stressed in the meeting that in order to qualify to receive aid from the fund, the artist should have a monthly income of less than Rs 15,000 and be above the age of 50.

“This fund is for the poor artists who have been affected badly from the ongoing situation,” Rana toId The Express Tribune.

Adding on, the MPA expressed bewilderment with Meera’s demands. “ I am surprised why Meera applied for the help as in this situation she herself should be supporting other poor artists. Meera should understand that everything is not a joke. Artists of her stature should set aside funds for difficult times when they earn large amounts,” he said.

Meanwhile, Meera maintained that she was left with no choice. "My shows in USA and Canada were cancelled due to Covid-19. I suffered a loss of around $100,000. I have to pay back the loan I took in Dubai. I was earning Rs 15,000 per appearance but with no shows, I am forced to apply for financial support,” she said.

The actor has maintained that she doesn’t know about her request being rejected. She intends on taking the matter with the Federal government.

The 'Baaji' star took to Instagram to announce that she is on her way back to the country

Pakistani star Meera is on her way to Pakistan after being stranded in the New York City during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last month, the Baaji star took to social media to plead to the government to bring her back to the country. A viral video of Meera had been circulating on the internet which was recorded in a hotel room in New York.

In the video, she had addressed Prime Minister Imran Khan and seek his help to bring her back home. “Mr Prime Minister, it’s 2 am here in New York and I am trapped in this hotel room addressing you right now. I arrived here with Humayun Saeed and other actors for the shooting of a film, but they’ve all left and I’m stuck still here,” the popular Pakistani actor had claimed.

Now another video has been shared by the actor on early Wednesday morning, which confirms that her requests have been answered and she is on her way back to Pakistan.

Meera also expressed gratitude to the govt for making arrangements for her return. She wrote, " Thanks to Allah, I am back in Pakistan. A big shout out to Pakistan Embassy Washington and New York Consulate. You guys are amazing. You work so hard to help our fellow Pakistanis overseas. Proud of you and praying for you! Stay blessed Pakistan!"

Meera also lauded the govt officials working to bring back the stranded Pakistani citizens. "They have been working very hard to help everyone, including myself. I have seen it with my own eyes. Please consider this, the next time you bash government or their efforts," the Nazar actor said.

New York has become the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, Meera had pleaded, “New York is turning into a graveyard with several people dying each day. Death is inevitable but I don’t want to die in a foreign country.”

She had added, “Mr Prime Minister, you have always supported the artistes of our country and nations around the world are bringing their citizens back home. I am begging you, please make arrangements for me to come back. I want to die in my own country.”

The 'Baaji' star in a video reminisced about her interactions with the late actor

Lollywood veteran Meera offered her respects to Rishi Kapoor upon his passing. In a video, the actor praised both Kapoor's work and personality while also recalling her personal experience with the late veteran.

Praising him on both his craft and personality, Meera reminisced about the time she interacted with him during the shoot of Nazar, back in 2005. "Rishi Kapoor while being a great actor was also a great man. During the shoot of Nazar, I had an encounter with him in Bombay. I had a great time with him," she said.

Adding on, Meera praised Kapoor's character deeming him as someone who became the source of her motivation. "His way of speaking was very friendly. He was a kindhearted man who was always ready to help. He got to know about me, praised my my work and motivated me. I remember him telling me that I should work with bigger and better stars like my self."

Meera also shared an anecdote of meeting Kapoor in Dubai. Apparently, the Bobby star had expressed his desire to collaborate with her. " We met in Dubai where we talked about a lot of things. He expressed his wish to work with me in a film. I too always wanted to work with him," she said.

Furthermore, the Baaji star talked about how she was shocked by Kapoor's death. " I felt a lot of pain upon hearing the news. He was a great actor. A great actor of this century," she concluded.

According to sources, the actor is quarantining with alleged husband Naveed and his family

Earlier this week, a video of actor Meera started was seen doing the rounds on social media wherein the Baaji star was reportedly stuck in a hotel room in New York during the ongoing pandemic. The clip showed her addressing Prime Minister Imran Khan, asking him to help her return home to Pakistan.

Now, as new information suggests, the video might have been staged by the actor - she is not stuck in a hotel room in NYC but under quarantine with her alleged husband Captain Naveed Pervaiz. Not just that, the duo has also reportedly been seen having fun amid a short, chit-chat session with Maria Wasti and Resham on a WhatsApp call.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_JZl96jvZD/

The video itself was not shot in a hotel room either, according to sources privy to the matter. The ‘hotel room’ is actually a room in Naveed’s house, where Meera was also flanked by her alleged father-in-law, Raja Khalid Pervaiz and Ali Saleem, better known as Begum Nawazish Ali.

Meera stuck in New York, asks PM Imran Khan for assistance

"With limited cash, my stay in New York has become difficult. I am stuck here, where scores of people are dying and it is turning into a graveyard. Death is inevitable, but I would prefer dying in my country than abroad. I wish to die in Pakistan," Meera had said in the video.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B-AZn-0n6oW/

The actor also claimed that she had arrived in the US with fellow actor including Humayun Saeed, who returned back to Pakistan earlier in March. According to Meera, despite the others returning, she was still stuck in NYC. But once again, as sources confirm, she did not travel with Humayun and or any other local celebrity.

Adding that she had to refuse..

In a recent interview on a local TV channel, popular actor Meera has has claimed that she turned down Bollywood star Emraan Hashmi's proposal for marriage. The celebrity added however, failed to provide a detailed account of the matter.

When questioned about the alleged rumour of being proposed by Hashmi once, Meera responded in the affirmative. She then added "but my family..," leaving the viewers to guess for themselves about whether her family refused to accept after acknowledging the matter or she turned down the offer herself for their sake.

Meera went on to reveal that renowned director Mahesh Bhatt had also advised her to marry her Nazar co-actor Ashmit Patel - the very actor who also briefly dated former actor Veena Malik, in 2010.

Nevertheless, speculations about Meera's marriage have always made the headlines, with rumours of the celebrities alleged affairs going around.

Last year, a marriage case involving Meera ruled in the favour of Attiqueur-Rehman, a businessman who claimed to be her husband. The court's decision means that Meera is still legally Rehman's wife.

This isn't the first time that Meera Jee has tried something other than acting or modelling

A Pakistani icon in her own right, Meera Jee has made quite the headlines throughout her career. After delivering a summer hit in the form of Baaji, the actor is all set to polish her vocal chords.

Mostly staying out of the spotlight post Baaji, it seems like the entertainer in Meera wants to jump out and this time, it's set to give Lata Mangeshkar a run for her money. In a recent video posted to Facebook, the starlet was seen learning sargam during her singing lessons, and it's not something you should miss!

[fbvideo link="https://www.facebook.com/AllPakistanDramaPageOfficial/videos/664646457663747/"]

This isn't the first time the actor has tried her luck at something other than acting. Back in 2017, Meera was spotted channeling Celine Dion with her rendition of My Heart Will Go On. Yes, it was everything you can imagine it to be.

https://twitter.com/fifiharoon/status/926731835283070976

This is also not the first time that a Pakistani star has tried their luck at singing. Recently, Mehwish Hayat has been posting quite some videos of herself belting out different songs, garnering mixed reviews from her followers.

Mehwish has even been a part of Coke Studio at one point, albeit not proving to be a very successful foray.

To add to the list, Humayun Saeed was also seen trying out his skills alongside actor Resham. High off of the success of Meray Paas Tum Ho, Humayun was seen crooning the OST of his serial.

Talk about a well-rounded industry!

The Meera and Amna Ilyas-starrer is not slowing down on the awards front

Seems like Saqib Malik's directional Baaji is not slowing down anytime soon. The Meera-starrer, which released in June this year, is all set to be screened at the prestigious Vancouver International South Asian Film Festival soon.

The drama also had successful runs at the DC South Asian Film Festival and the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival, where it had earlier won the Grand Jury Prize as well as bagging accolades for Best Supporting Actor. Now, the news of film's latest success was revealed on its official Instagram page, which announced Baaji will be screened in Vancouver on November 16.

https://www.instagram.com/baajithefilm/?utm_source=ig_embed

Baaji is a film set in the time space of Lollywood's fading glory and the emerging Pakistani film industry. It stars Meera in the lead role, where she plays Shameera, a superstar whose popularity is fast dwindling, as is her sanity. Baaji is said to be the actor's comeback film and the story line eerily similar to her life in reality.

'Baaji' and 'Laal Kabootar' gear up to be screened at DC South Asian Film Festival

The cast includes Osman Khalid Butt, Amna Ilyas, Ali Kazmi and Nayyar Ejaz in major roles. Mohsin Abbas Haider and Nisho Begum also make an appearance in the film.

'Baaji' star says female actors are denied credible roles after a certain age

The renowned Meera and film-maker Saqib Malik were guests on this week’s Say It All with Iffat Omer, as they discussed the mistreatment of senior female actors in the Pakistani entertainment industry.

Iffat pointed out that senior actors now are made to feel irrelevant especially at award shows. She said that youngsters are given the front seats whilst veterans who have contributed the most to the industry are made to sit at the back. “I would rather not go to such events anymore,” stated the host.

Iffat's claim arose from a serious discussion with her guests, as Meera opened up about the hardships she has had to face in the industry. She hesitated several times when questioned about her age as she expressed how it is not essential to put a number on herself. “I feel I would be disrespecting the women who look up to me if I talk about my age because it does not influence who I am as a person. My character is important. My work is important. Not my age," clarified the Baaji star.

Saqib was also questioned about the age limit that is imposed on female actors after which they become undesirable. To this, the director of Baaji said that his film was about the comeback of an actor well after her golden period had passed.

[caption id="attachment_1313059" align="alignnone" width="640"] Saqib Malik: A BRIDE’S DREAM, Deepak Perwani launches his bridal atelier with much fanfare in Karachi[/caption]

He also pointed out some Indian actors who have made a remarkable comebacks into Bollywood, regardless of their ages. “Now things are changing. Madhuri Dixit is doing work and she is getting films written for her. Tabu is one of the biggest stars of India and she has made a magnificent comeback. She recently did three to four films that are hits, and she is 43 or 44,” he said.

However, both Iffat and Meera opined that this is not the case here in Pakistan yet. They continued to talk about how uploading a simple picture on Instagram becomes a curse as you age, given that people bash you for wearing the simplest of things.

“We come on the screen every day with a happy face, to entertain the public and represent our country, regardless of how we feel inside. However, we do not receive any appreciation off-screen," Meera said.

She expressed how celebrities are made to sacrifice their comfort in order to put up a show, yet, they are not empathised with because their struggles are hidden behind a mask. To this, Iffat added that she had to come back to a shoot just one week after her mother's passing.

The dialogue progressed as Meera kept her hold on the topic, bringing in the criticism she received throughout her career. “There was a point in my career when I honestly wanted to do better work but it was not given to me. It developed this urge in me, which I feel develops in all artists, but that desire is exploited in our industry. Here, people keep giving you hope but nothing comes out of it.”

[caption id="attachment_1990600" align="alignnone" width="640"] PHOTO: MEERA/INSTAGRAM[/caption]

The starlet went on to say that when she talks abroad about the kind of roles she wants to do she is always encouraged and appreciated. “My desire to do the roles I want is appreciated overseas but people here only respect you when you are dead. That is when they realise the contributions an individual has made or could have made but was never given the opportunity to,” Meera concluded.

‘Baaji’ starlets discuss upcoming film, their camaraderie and cinema in general with ‘The Express Tribune’

Whenever someone or something is late in the Pakistani showbiz industry, people start comparing them to actor Humaima Malick or film-maker Saqib Malik. Apparently, the Bol starlet shows up on the set way past her call times and Saqib big screen debut has been in the ‘making’ for at least a decade.

We are not sure if Humaima’s work ethic has improved or not but Saqib’s Baaji is finally hitting the screens on Friday, June 28. The lead stars of the upcoming drama, Meera and Amna Ilyas sat down with The Express Tribune recently and shared their nerves about what is being called the most anticipated release of the year.

[caption id="attachment_1997286" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO:FILE[/caption]

Meera is one of those rare celebrities who, despite having a limited and not-so-celebrated body of work, manage to remain more relevant in pop-culture than many of her much-venerated colleagues. Yet, a film by a seasoned director like Saqib doesn’t hurt a dime. Choosing Baaji as her comeback to mainstream Urdu cinema was a no-brainer for Meera.

This is my time: 'Baaji' trailer seems eerily similar to Meera's real life

“I have always wanted to work with Saqib Malik on a film,” Meera shared. “In fact, I agreed to make a formal comeback to mainstream cinema only because the film was being directed by Saqib Malik.”

Meera is not only fond of the film-maker’s work ethic but believes that Saqib is one of the few people who understand the magic of the big screen. The character that he has written for Meera in Baaji is a diva – a film star who goes by the name of Shameera. The similarity between the names and personalities forces one to draw parallels between the real and the reel, even if they don’t exist.

[caption id="attachment_1997279" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO:SCREENGRAB[/caption]

“I think Shameera is not similar to me as such,” says Meera, “But there are moments in her life that I can relate to. I can basically understand where Shameera is coming from.”

Neha, on the other hand, is Shameera’s confidant, best friend and someone who looks up to her. Eventually, they come at a crossroad where the line gets fuzzy. Amna is excited about playing Neha, who she believes represents the anti-thesis of Shameera: the ordinary girl whose epitome of leisure and entertainment is going to a shopping mall because she can’t afford it otherwise.

“I think the masses are really going to relate to my character,” said the model-turned-actor. “She represents the girl who works in a beauty parlour, who drives the local cab and yet, finds satisfaction in the ordinary pleasures of life.”

5 of Meera's fabulous looks from 'Baaji'

Amna belongs to a different generation of actors. The methods have evolved, the aesthetics have changed and the screens are getting smaller with time. Yet, charisma is something that continues to remain central to the frame and that is something that she believes Meera continues to personify.

“God has given Meera jee such an expressive face. She is made for the big screen,” said Amna. “Meera is a superstar. I have been so impressed by her professionalism that I can only call my work with Meera a learning experience.”

Hayat is set to leave you breathless with her performance!

Mehwish Hayat is ready to set the cinema screens ablaze, this time as Gangster Guriya in the upcoming film Baaji. The Tamgha-e-Imtiaz laureate dons a tough avatar as she shakes a leg on this new item number.

[caption id="attachment_1996444" align="alignnone" width="625"] Via ARY Films[/caption]

Osman Khalid Butt, the lead actor of the movie who plays Rohail, is the creative mind behind the song. He is also the lyricist and the choreographer.

https://www.instagram.com/p/By2vvIzJVXc/?

With an exceptionally versatile dancer like Hayat, Butt had ample room to experiment with different backdrops which he clearly did. This Billi-turned-Chirya, who is now the Gangster Guriya you need to watch out for, goes from sitting on a Game of Thrones-inspired throne to breaking the garage floor by the end of the video.

Taha Malik is the music director and if you have not already guessed it, the song is sung by the famous Bollywood singer, Sunidhi Chauhan.

[caption id="attachment_1996435" align="alignnone" width="625"] via ARY Films[/caption]

Looks like Hayat is not the only actor making a special appearance in the film. The video features actor Yasir Hussain, who opens the dance floor saying “I know the perfect Gangster Guriya”.

[caption id="attachment_1996439" align="alignnone" width="625"] via ARY Films[/caption]

Speaking of taking inspirations, one cannot help but compare Hayat's thuggish demeanour to that of Katrina Kaif from some of her Bollywood blockbuster item numbers.

Starting from Hayat's curls that look exactly like the ones that Kaif had in the song Husn Parcham in the Bollywood film, Zero.

The video features the Punjab Nahi Jaungi starlet as a rebel who has no care in the world, constantly reminding the viewers of Nawaz Mistry's persona in the song Afghan Jalebi from Phantom.

Lastly, if you loved Kaif's iconic slide in the Bollywood song Ishq Shava in Jab Tak Hai Jaan that released in 2012, you are in for a treat, as our Billi does it too in this song. You can decide for yourself who performs better!

[caption id="attachment_1591023" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: NDTV[/caption]

People on social media see the resemblance too.

https://twitter.com/junaidkhan301/status/1141399513703374850

As far as the tune of the song is concerned, it is not as catchy as the other two songs of Baaji that released earlier, Badlaan and Khilti Kali.

Visually, a lot is happening in the song and for you to get a hang of the lyrics, you have to listen to it at least thrice. However, Hayat's matchless energy is enough to keep audiences hooked throughout the song.

Baaji is a Pakistani-thriller that will mark as a comeback film of actor Meera, directed by Saqib Malik. The film stars Amna Ilyas, Ali Kazmi and Mohsin Abbas Haider.

The film will play in cinemas on June 28.

Actor says she has lost access to her account a month ago

If you like to keep up with social media and the constant shift in events, you would know the latest buzz in the world of Twitter: hacking.

It all started with Amitabh Bachchan's Twitter handle being hacked on Monday night followed by that of Adnan Sami who was targeted by the same Turk hackers.

However, it looks like our very own Meera Jee fell prey to the cyber attacking first.

In an exclusive conversation with The Express Tribune, the Baaji actor said, "My Twitter handle got hacked last month."

https://twitter.com/TheMeeraJee/status/1110172973019865088

As excited and thrilled as she was about her upcoming movie, Meera could not hide being upset about losing access to her Twitter feed.

"It was hacked a month ago, I'm very upset about it. I would appreciate any help in this regard," the Hotal star requested.

We hope she gets her Twitter feed back soon.

Actor talks about her upcoming film and whether or not it draws inspiration from the star's career itself

Miss Meera Jee is always unapologetically herself, even as the world takes pride in mocking her. Time has taught the star how to handle life; she isn’t one to back down before its many hurdles and this is evident in Baaji, wherein Meera – resplendent as ever – portrays a struggling superstar hanging onto her superstardom by a thread.

The Express Tribune recently caught up with the Lollywood icon to find out more about the upcoming film and whether or not it draws inspiration from Meera’s career itself. Here’s what she had to say.

[caption id="attachment_1957267" align="alignnone" width="640"] SCREENGRAB[/caption]

‘The Express Tribune [ET]:’ How is ‘Baaji’ different from the other projects you’ve worked on?

Meera Irtiza [MI]: Well, for one thing, Baaji has been an experience of a lifetime! It has given me more opportunity to show my acting skills than anything else I’ve done before.

But more importantly, it has proved to me what can be achieved when one gives total commitment to a project. Special thanks our director Saqib Malik for this!

ET: What convinced you to choose ‘Baaji’ as your big comeback project?

MI: I had been waiting for something that would show allow me to prove Meera is an actor first – not a celebrity. You see, with social media, it's very easy to become a star these days but to be appreciated for your work is very difficult.

[caption id="attachment_1884410" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: PUBLICITY[/caption]

When Saqib pitched Baaji to me, it felt like a new lease of life. I have the title role; the story and script are unique. And Saqib kept me in mind when conceiving the film. What else could I have asked for? I couldn't have asked for a better comeback.

ET: Speaking of, there seems to be a lot of similarity between you and your character Shameera?

MI: Actually, the only similarity is that I play a movie star. Baaji shows the many ups and downs in the life of a big heroine. Of course, I could relate to Shameera as I am from this industry but there is nothing else in common between me and my character.

ET: If you could adopt one trait from her, what would it be?

MI: Her sense of style! I have to say I have never looked more stylish or glamourous in a film and all the credit goes to my styling team! Saqib wanted the character to have a larger than life, classic Hollywood presence and I think he succeeded in capturing it that way.

ET: You recently said you want to do films with social messages and spur change. How will ‘Baaji’ help with that?

MI: I always say good cinema can influence attitudes. You can feel it in your heart when you are doing something meaningful. Baaji has many social messages but it’s best you wait and watch the film yourself.

ET: What sort of reaction are you expecting?

MI: I am hoping Baaji will both satisfy my loyal fans and the audience at large. For an actor, nothing is greater than gaining respect for their acting. I have dedicated my entire life it; this is all I know. I work like a foot soldier and just want to deliver my best. Baaji has given me that opportunity.

ET: Any special memory from ‘Baaji’ that you’d like to share with us?

MI: Shooting for it is been one long, cherished memory. It was a tough shoot, physically and emotionally. Saqib is a perfectionist. But I enjoyed every part of it, especially my scenes with Ali Kazmi. He’s an excellent and supportive co-star.

ET: What’s next for Meera?

MI: I want to take on quality work only, be it in films or on TV. Baaji is the first big film I have done after the revival of local cinema and I am so, so impressed with the progress we’ve made! I am also thinking of producing a film. But right now, I am focused Baaji. At least in my heart, I know that it will be remembered as a classic piece of Pakistani cinema.

Saqib Malik's directorial debut's trailer promises outrageous drama

'Your time is up, baby," Ali Kazmi tells an enraged Meera in the first glimpse of Baaji's trailer. "No. This is my time and this time will stay forever," she retorts.

And indeed, she's right. The first official trailer of Saqib Malik's highly-anticipated take on showbiz in the modern world was revealed late on Thursday evening and boy, does it look intriguing. Meera plays Shameera in the upcoming film - a superstar whose popularity is fast dwindling, as is her sanity. Cue Kareena Kapoor Khan from 2012 Bollywood drama Heroine.

SCREENGRAB

In the two-minutes-and-forty-seconds long clip, we see Shameera being advised to join theatre as her fans have apparently moved on from her and she is not getting any good film offers anymore.

Many would argue that the arc is eerily reminiscent of Meera's life these days. But neither she nor her character Shameera are ready to back down and that's obvious in the rest of the trailer. It's nice to see Meera proving her mettle, despite having been on a hiatus from acting for quite some time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P25RH1tI6EU

We are then introduced to Neha, a small town girl with big dreams who happens to develop a friendship with Shameera after meeting the star at a salon. Eventually, the duo decides to join hands and try to revive Shameera's sinking career.

[caption id="attachment_1984149" align="alignnone" width="625"] SCREENGRAB[/caption]

In between this partnership comes film-maker Rohail Khan, played by the multi-talented Diyar-e-Dil star Osman Khalid Butt. Rohail has a film with a vision up his sleeves, and a desire to cast the struggling Shameera in it.

Pressed for choice, she obviously signs on. But soon enough, what she and Neha thought would be a career-changing move goes south. Problems ensue as the latter forms a close romantic bond with Rohail, while her 'baaji' simply looks on with envy.

Swept into the world of showbiz, with a dashing artisan like Rohail by her side, Neha subconsciously begins emulating Shameera and her superstar lifestyle. And this, eventually, makes the star believe Neha is trying to replace her.

[caption id="attachment_1984151" align="alignnone" width="625"] SCREENGRAB[/caption]

And so, their relationships with each other and those around them become to crumble. A whole lot of drama follows, juxtaposed against the backdrop of the glitz, glamour and extravagance of the world of showbiz.

We see Rohail and Shameera shaking a leg at what can only be described as a royal ball. We see Neha and Rohail growing closer at a dance party. We see glimpses of Shameera's not-so-humble abode as well. After all, she is a superstar, albeit one of the olden days.

While the trailer is quite intriguing, we did feel that it has given away way more about Baaji than it probably should have. It has left little to the imagination, revealing many of the film's important scenes and much of the storyline.

And it's quite obvious what the makers are offering to the audience: drama, drama and lots of drama.

But we wouldn't expect anything less from a film with Miss Meera Jee at its helm. The Lollywood beauty shines through and through, both in terms of acting and her A-list style and flair in the trailer. Needless to say, we can't wait to see what she's got in store for us once the film releases on June 28.

Baaji also stars Mohsin Abbas Haider, Nayyer Ejaz and Nisho Begum in pivotal roles.

Meera praised fellow actor Ali, saying he is a very talented and accomplished artist

In a recent interview, veteran actor Meera has called out singer Meesha Shafi for accusing Ali Zafar of sexual harassment. The Nazar star mentioned the former Overload vocalist hopes to become Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai with her 'tactics', reported Express News.

According to a statement, Meera praised fellow actor Ali, saying he is a very talented and accomplished artist. "Meesha is in the wrong in this case," she said. "Anyone can get two seconds of fame after wrongfully using the name of a successful individual and Meesha has done the same by dragging Ali in this issue."

The Baaji star continued, "Meesha's intentions are in front of everyone. She only wants to stay relevant and make headlines by alleging that Ali harassed her. Meesha hopes to get international attention like Malala."

She concluded, "Ali is innocent and I stand with him in these trying times."
Earlier, Ali made the same reference in a press conference. "I don’t know whether by doing this she wanted to become another Malala and get fame abroad. Malala is a true warrior who stands for truth and justice having made great sacrifices. Meesha cannot become her by lying and running away from justice hiding behind fake profiles on social media.”

Film promises to be a rollercoaster ride and Meera seems to own every frame!

Saqib Malik's upcoming multi-starrer Baaji is one of the most anticipated films of 2019. We've been hearing about it for months and now, finally, the team behind the project has dropped its very first teaser! And boy, does Meera look glam in it!

Baaji boasts of a stellar ensemble cast besides Meera, who is making a comeback to the silver screen with a career-defining role in it. Then there is model-turned-actor Amna Ilyas is portraying a struggling star, hoping to make it big.

The male lineup is second to none with Osman Khalid Butt as a director and Mohsin Abbas Haider and Ali Kazmi also bringing their individualities to the screen. Yesteryear stars Nisho and Nayyar Ejaz will also be seen in important supporting roles.

From the looks of it, Baaji promises to be a rollercoaster ride and Meera seems to be owning every frame.

The film is said to be a deeper glimpse into the dark world of showbiz. While Malik wants to delve into the art of storytelling, he also plans to pay homage to the grandeur of cinema of cinema with it.

Baaji, co-written by Irfan Ahmed Urfi and Saqib himself, is exquisitely lensed by renowned director of photography Salman Razzaq. The film's music includes work by Zeb Bangash, Taha Malik, Jamal Rahman and the maestro of Pakistani cinema Tafu Sahib.

Set against the backdrop of a fading Pakistani showbiz industry and the emergence of a new order in Lollywood, Baaji is sure to leave an imprint and set the screens on fire.

The film's poster has an intriguing caption too. "Every dream has a price," it reads.

Baaji is slated to release on June 28. We definitely can't wait for this one!

It seems like the two stars have sorted out the beef between them!

A little over a year ago, a video of Meera Jee criticising her contemporary Mahira Khan went viral. From urging the public to "stop promoting" the Raees starlet to stating there are "better and more gorgeous" actors out there, we could sense quite a lot of tension between the two leading superstars.

However, in a recent turn of events, Meera seems to have come to terms with Mahira's fame, while the latter seems to have accepted the Nazar star for who she is. On the work front, Meera will next be seen in Parey Hut Love and Baaji. In Asim Raza's film, the actor will be seen making a cameo in a song.

Praising the song, Mahira tweeted, "I just saw a little preview of one of the songs of #pareyhutlove and the song and everyone in it is fantastic... but man you can’t look away from Meera Jee!! Owns every frame!"

https://twitter.com/TheMahiraKhan/status/1098565173294571521

An over the moon Meera responded saying, "Thankyou @TheMahiraKhan for such a loving tweet. I will always cherish the love and respect you have given me. Also, thankyou for being who you are and making all of us proud in so many ways. May God bless you forever."

https://twitter.com/TheMeeraJee/status/1098696074066305024

In September last year, Meera also complimented Mahira for her humanitarian efforts. Speaking about the responsibilities that come with fame, Meera earlier tweeted, “One of the women I admire – Angelina Jolie – said that when someone has a lot of fame, they also have a responsibility to give back to society. Otherwise, the popularity is of no use.”

She continued, “I applaud Mahira Khan and Aamina Sheikh for their initiatives and working with Afghan refugees. Especially children and more so, with girls.”

We hope the two leading ladies have put their differences aside!

'Meera was the first person I thought about the film,' director Saqib Malik

With the Pakistani cinema industry flourishing, many film-makers have opted for rom-coms or action thrillers. However, unconventional films such as Cake and Motorcycle Girl have managed to wow critics with their meaningful storytelling and visuals, but often failed to fare well at the box office.

It runs In the family: Saqib Malik and Adnan Malik

Likewise, Saqib Malik who will be marking his film debut with the highly-anticipated Baaji believes in having a more powerful impact than crunching big numbers at the box office.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Malik said, "As everyone knows, I have been planning a film for the past 15 years. I've had a bunch of false starts but I feel Baaji was destined to be 'the one'. I always wanted my first film to be something from my heart - something that is intense and powerful."

He explained that when he met the writer Irfan Ahmed Urfi, everything seamlessly came together. Malik added that the film is set with a backdrop of a dying Lollywood and the rise of new Pakistani cinema which is why it's a perfect time to make a film like Baaji.

[caption id="attachment_1815900" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: FILE[/caption]

The film-maker commented, "Baaji is different than other films because the story is unique. There is a lot of storytelling and I've mainly focused on characterisation. I feel that it's a commercial film with a dark edge."

Speaking of the same, Malik continued, "I think I have a dream cast and everyone fits their character perfectly. It's an ensemble film and the actors have done full justice to the script. While casting them, I wasn't thinking about the box office but a higher impact. Most of these actors haven't worked together in the past so to have them join forces in Baaji is electric."

Baaji will be the first time audiences will get to witness the likes of Osman Khalid Butt, Mohsin Abbas Haider, Ali Kazmi and Aamna Ilyas share screen space with iconic diva, Meera. Yesteryear actor Nisho who has worked in classics such as Rangeela, Society Girl and Kubra Aashiq will be returning to the screen after a long hiatus. Nayyar Ejaz who was last seen in Teefa in Trouble opposite Ali Zafar and Maya Ali will be joining the star-stellar cast.

Speaking of taking the risk and casting Meera in the film, who is often surrounded by controversy, Malik stated, "Meera was the first person I thought about the film. I needed someone who could play the ultimate diva and no does it better than her. I was faced with opposition on casting her but I don't care about controversies. Meera has been a consummate professional throughout her career and this is her comeback film. She is going to show the world what a star she really is."

While not everyone in the industry is open to working with Meera, Ilyas who plays the female lead spoke of her experience on working with her. She said, "When I was offered the film by Saqib, I knew that this would be the biggest and most exciting challenge of my career. But honestly, I didn't know what working with Meera would be like. She is a larger than life presence - to say the least - and she undoubtedly knows how to handle the camera like a pro. Our relationship in Baaji is the core of the story and it was very important for me to hold my own in front of her."

[caption id="attachment_1815901" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/AAMNA ILYAS[/caption]

Ilyas added that as the film is nearing completion, her chemistry has been beautifully captured by the camera. "Meera ji is full of surprises and there's never a dull moment with her. Apart from her, I also share a lot of screen space with Osman and Mohsin and both of them are excellent actors. Working with them was delightful."

On the other hand, Butt who has often made satirical pieces on Meera, said that it has always been a dream of his to work with the icon.

"It was a surreal experience. I've stated it on record that I've always wanted to work with her so when Saqib approached me for the film, I was elated. Meera is not merely an actor, she is an institution, a force of nature. And she fits her character in Baaji like a glove," the Balu Mahi actor said.

He further added, "We share some very intense, volatile scenes that are sure to be a first for the Pakistani screen. I think our generation has forgotten Meera as a consummate actor. Her social media persona and offscreen antics have taken front stage of late. With Baaji, I think audiences are in for a real surprise. And it's all because of Irfan and Saqib's script and meticulous direction."

[caption id="attachment_1815902" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/OSMAN KHALID BUTT[/caption]

Butt continued that Malik is a perfectionist and his love and knowledge of cinema shines through in every frame, making audiences and critics unable to believe that Baaji is his film debut. He concluded, "As for the film, all I can reveal now is that this is the closest to Pedro Almodóvar (Spanish film-maker) our cinema has gotten. Expect a complex narrative, intense drama, thrills, masala, dark humour and much more."

Kazmi also commented. "This film is truly has a dream cast and crew. Over the years, everyone has heard strange stories about Meera so no one knows that to expect from her when you meet her," stated Kazmi.

He added that one should never judge a book by its cover. "Meera is an original and a force of nature. A genuinely kindhearted, warm person whose passion for living life to the fullest is only topped by her awe-inspiring passion for her work," shared the Motorcycle Girl actor.

The 36-year-old continued that he had a lot of fun with Meera and he learnt a lot from her experience. Kazmi told, "If there's one thing I can say is that she has brought a fire to this performance that will keep you at the edge of your seats."

However, it was not only Ilyas, Malik, Kazmi and Butt who sang praises for Meera. The Nazar star too was very fond of her Baaji cast.

Speaking of making a comeback, Meera said, "I have not just acted in Baaji, I have lived in this film. It's been an excellent experience. Aamna is a hardworker and she is keen on learning and acing her act. She is a natural actor and saw glimpses of Shabana Azmi in her. Osman is someone who lives and breathes his role. He wouldn't even get out of his character after the scene was over. I found his focus and professionalism very inspiring."

[caption id="attachment_1815903" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: TWITTER/MEERA[/caption]

She will be seen opposite Kazmi in most of the scenes. She added, "I think people will love Ali and I in some of our scenes together. We look very nice together and we're always on the same wavelength. Ali is a fearless actor and really works with the his co-stars. He is very calm and I feel that he brought out the best in me."

While the film is reportedly set to release in mid 2019, fans can expect Baaji to be a social drama with a lot of thrill. It promises to be a film with a difference and deliver a dose of intense glamour. With characters that originate from Pakistan's entertainment industry of the 70s, the film aims to be very contemporary in its tone and treatment.

Film based on Meera's journey to stardom in the works

On the musical front, Baaji will feature voices lent by Zeb Bangash, Jamal Rahman and Taha Malik. Ustad Tafu better known as Taffo will be exuding his charm with the tabla. In the past, he has worked with Noor Jahan and was last featured on Adil Omar's latest album Transcendence as a percussionist.

Saqib Malik's long-awaited directorial debut for the big screen, titled Baaji will soon be nearing completion. A social drama-cum-thriller set against the backdrop of a fading Lollywood and the emerging new order of the Pakistan film industry, Baaji promises to be a film with a difference, stated a press release.
Ali Saleem is innocent, says Meera
Penned by Irfan Ahmed Urfi and Saqib himself, Baaji's storyline aims to deliver a sizzling dose of high glamour and intense drama. Although the film is a homage of sorts to the riveting story and character oriented classics of Pakistani cinema of the 70s, Baaji will, however, be very contemporary in its tone and treatment.

[caption id="attachment_1770312" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/MEERA[/caption]
The film boasts of a unique and stellar lineup of actors, including Meera making her comeback in a career-defining title role. Showstopper supermodel Aamna Ilyas, who recently stole the show in 7 Din Mohabbat In, will also be proving her acting prowess as the female lead.

[caption id="attachment_1788857" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/OSMAN KHALID BUTT[/caption]
The men in the film should equally hold their own with Osman Khalid Butt leading a crew that includes Mohsin Abbas Haider and Ali Kazmi in pivotal roles. Nisho, the Lollywood star of yesteryear, will be seen in a strong supporting role, along with the highly sought after Nayyar Ejaz.
I'm a better actor than Priyanka Chopra: Meera
Musically, Baaji should also hit all the right notes with names like Zeb Bangash, Jamal Rahman, Taha Malik and the legendary maestro of Pakistani cinema, Taffoo, contributing to the film. Audiences will surely wait with bated breath for Baaji to hit the screens in mid-2019.

Actor reveals she was once asked by a reporter if she will ever share screen space with Bollywood's King Khan

Remember when Meera Jee claimed that she was a better actor than Priyanka Chopra?

The star has expressed her desire to work in Hollywood numerous times. But what we didn't know was that she once told an LA Times reporter that she will determine the right time to act with Bollywood superstar, Shah Rukh Khan.

Recently, taking to Twitter, the star, who ventured into Bollywood with Nazar, wrote, "I was once asked by an LA Times reporter - if you are a super star when will Shah Rukh Khan act with you? I said, 'No, price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. I own myself and I will determine when I want to act with him'."

Kudos to Meera Jee for holding her own!

Previously, she requested all her fans to support her journey to Hollywood and tweeted, “To all my loyal fans, I would like to broaden my acting horizon and kindly request you to encourage and tweet to Universal Pictures to please consider me in their upcoming film projects.”

The 'Nazar' star has often expressed her dislike for the 'Raees' actor

It's no breaking news that Meera is no fan of Mahira Khan's. But in a shocking turn of events, the Nazar actor recently complimented the latter for her humanitarian efforts.

There are better actors than Mahira Khan, stop promoting her: Meera

On September 9, Meera spoke of the responsibilities that come along with fame. She tweeted, "One of the women I admire - Angelina Jolie - said that when someone has a lot of fame, they also have a responsibility to give back to society. Otherwise, the popularity is of no use."

https://twitter.com/TheMeeraJee/status/1038660591001522176

The star continued, "I applaud Mahira Khan and Aamina Sheikh for their initiatives and working with Afghan refugees. Especially children and more so, with girls."

https://twitter.com/TheMeeraJee/status/1038660696555311105

This is the first time Meera has spoken in favour of Mahira. While she has earlier expressed that she does not hate the Humsafar actor, Meera also stated, "There are better actors so please stop promoting Mahira. It is unfair to other stars in the film industry.”

She even blamed Mahira from "campaigning" against her.

Why Meera hates on Mahira

While Meera has often expressed her dislike for Mahira, the latter has never commented on the subject. However, we do hope that all is good between the two now.

Policy grants industry status to film sector, setting up film academy, abolition of duty on import of film equipment

The newly approved National Culture and Film Policy has been prepared after consulting all the provinces and experts from across the country to integrate culture and civilisation.

“The policy will help promote national identity and present the real face of the country abroad,” a noted artist Muhammad Azeem Iqbal said. Speaking to the media he lauded the efforts of Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) Director General Jamal Shah for hosting a three-day National Artistes Convention to finalise the draft of the policy

He said that each artiste and their official role was laudable in formulating the policy.

He stressed that implementation of the culture and film policy will promote tolerance, film, music, theater, folklore, heritage and regional languages.

First ever policy on film, culture soon, says Marriyum

The first ever National Film and Culture policy was widely welcomed by the leading artistes, film producers, cultural and literary personalities.

Former Chairman Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) Prof Qasim Bughio, prominent singers Multanikar, Ahmed Ali Khan, legendary actors Qavi Khan, Mustafa Qureshi, film producers Zeba Bakhtiar, Usman Pirzada, Syed Noor, Babra Sharif, Sheema Kirmani and film star Shan and Meera welcomed the approval of new policy.

Legendary actor Qavi Khan expressed the hope that new film policy would be implemented for promotion of art and artistes of the country.

The new policy envisages formally according the status of industry to the film industry; establishment of finance funds and film academy; building of film studios; restoration of the Directorate of Films and Publications and abolition of duty on import of film equipment, film censor fee and sales tax; inclusion of artistes in the health scheme and 70% rebate to the foreign film producers on traveling allowance and eatables.

Under attack: Promoting culture can help inculcate tolerance in society

The policy also stipulates that on national days only the Pakistani films would be screened.

Film studios will be set up under the public private partnership and the government will provide land for the project. At least 80% rebates would also be given as far as the construction of cinemas are concerned.

Five years ago, actor claimed to be married to a man named Naveed

After a nine-year-long legal battle, Lahore’s family court has ruled actor Meera to be the wife of Sheikh Attiqueur Rahman. Earlier, the court had dismissed the actor's petition to bar Attique from calling her his wife.

There are better actors than Mahira Khan, stop promoting her: Meera

In his verdict, judge Babar Nadeem said that the nikkahnama (legal marriage contract) between Meera and Attique is authentic.

No one can just become ‘Meera’, it takes years of struggle: Meera

About five years ago, Meera also alleged that she was married to Captain Naveed. Speaking to The Express Tribune, the actor’s father, Sarwer Shah said, “When the judgement of Meera’s marriage was passed, my family and I were not present in the court. I believe that our lawyer knows best about the next step to take in this case.”

According to another family member, Meera was hopeful that the judgement would be in her favour, which is also the reason why she was planning to move to the US and settle there.

This isn't the first time Meera has belittled Mahira

 [fbvideo link=" https://www.facebook.com/etribunevideo/videos/1623965054330776/"][/fbvideo]

Pakistani film industry veteran Meera has always been very vocal when it comes to Mahira Khan. This time, the Kasak star has openly disapproved of the limelight Mahira has come to receive, in a video that went viral recently.

"There are many gorgeous actors and actresses in Pakistan, who have done exceptional work, and definitely better than Mahira," said Meera. "There are better actors so please stop promoting Mahira. It is unfair to other stars in the film industry."

No one can just become ‘Meera’, it takes years of struggle: Meera

Ironically, both Mahira and Meera were spotted in Dubai for 10th annual Masala! Awards just two days ago. And of course, there were a lot of pictures.

One of the most stunning pictures we came across was one with Bollywood's ace designer Manish Malhotra and actor Sridevi, posing with Pakistani beauties Mahira, Saba Qamar and Mawra Hocane.

[caption id="attachment_1584641" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: MASALA! UAE INSTAGRAM[/caption]

But then, something else caught our eye! Can you spot a red gown to Mahira's left? Yep. That's right. That's our very own Miss Meera Jee, who was apparently snubbed from the picture.

Fortunately, we found another one with the Nazar actor included. Perhaps this can be the reason why Meera is miffed at the Raees starlet?

[caption id="attachment_1584644" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: MASALA! UAE INSTAGRAM[/caption]

Of course, this wasn't the first time Meera has criticised Mahira. Previously, she once tweeted asking fans and followers to stop wasting their time watching the Ho Mann Jahan star's films and commercials.

The tweet could use some grammatical tweaking but the message was loud and clear. “Mahira Khan replaced me in a major project by Momina Duraid — she literally took that project away from me,” claimed Meera in a previous interview with The Express Tribune.

Although she did not disclose the name of said project, Meera justified her statements further by accusing Mahira of campaigning against her. “Even I have met many Bollywood celebrities, including Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan and Karan Johar. In fact, SRK even offered me a film,” said Meera.

People said I sold myself to Bollywood, now everyone is doing Indian films: Meera

“But because of Mahira’s campaign against me, I lost all my projects in the Indian industry and she got one.”

The controversial actor believes that she proved her ‘brilliant’ acting skills in the film Hotal, because of which fans are looking forward to her work. “If we create groups within the industry, the situation will get worse. So, I humbly request Mahira to come forward on the basis of her talent only and stop sidelining me.”

The 'Nazar' star revealed she will be making a comeback next year with a film in which she's playing the lead

Popular Pakistani film actor Meera was attending the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) 2017 and expressed an opinion about how more Pakistanis should come and showcase their films in events like so.
“We’re all from Pakistan. We should be united and using such platforms to utilise these events and project our industry and our country," she told The Express Tribune. "Obviously, when our businesses grow, we get recognised internationally . Look at how Indians project themselves! We can use events like DIFF to project ourselves because it brings a lot of attention to our films.”
Meera wishes to claim back her throne with latest photoshoot
The Kasak star started her career when she was just nine years old, in an advertisement directed by Mahmood Sipra. Her first film was in 1995 and she rose to fame quickly after Chief Saab. Meera made her Bollywood debut in 2005's Nazar, directed by Soni Razdan and written by Mahesh Bhatt.
Meera spoke about how people had judged her during that time, for working in a Bollywood film. The actor also talked about how film star Shaan Shahid is now promoting his film Arth - the story of which is based on a 1982 Mahesh Bhatt film of the same name. “People said I had sold myself to Bollywood but now, everyone is doing Bollywood movies," she stated.

[caption id="attachment_1582145" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: PUBLICITY[/caption]
Bollywood notwithstanding, Meera had trouble in relaunching herself to the level of stardom that she was accustomed to. She spoke with a startling honesty about how she had ‘fallen behind’ in the newer, more social-media oriented culture of films and Lollywood.
“I don’t know if our management was weak but it took me time to learn social media. I don’t understand computers and technology a lot – I’m accustomed to a different way of communicating with the media and the press,” she shared.
Meera's rendition of 'My Heart Will Go On' will err...make your heart sink
Explaining the reasons why she fell behind, Meera added, “It took me long to understand this medium. There was a time when there was no printed paper published without my interview.”
But as time and technology changed, demands of the industry changed. Media today relies heavily not only the performances of film and television stars but also their social media statuses as well.

[caption id="attachment_1567195" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: FILE[/caption]
“I never thought social media was something important; I never gave much attention but I cannot ignore social media and this technology anymore," Meera admitted. "Directors and agencies would ask me, ‘How many followers do you have? What is your existence on social media?’ I had been living in the perception that if a social media star or I would be standing at a public place, people would come talk to me for autographs but it has changed now. I’m an experienced actress but it has all become about followers. People judge you based on your social media followers.”
The Ishq Khuda star also felt that her team was one that she had worked with since the 90s and it had to grow with her.
No one can just become ‘Meera’, it takes years of struggle: Meera
However, speaking about the rise of celebrity managers and agencies, Meera said, “Humayun Saeed and Mahira Khan have really worked well in the industry. Their teams in Karachi are really more understanding...their managers, their PR, their system is much better than what I had in Lahore. When I speak to people in Karachi, it feels like I’m speaking to people in Mumbai. I had a much more older team with whom I’d say one thing and it would be ten steps backward. I was based in Lahore so I couldn’t find those good teams in Karachi.”

[caption id="attachment_1582144" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: PUBLICITY[/caption]
Meera has also been profoundly active on her social media platforms for quite some time. The actor tweets as @TheMeeraJee and is on Instagram as @meerajeeofficial. However, the starlet confessed she does read the comments and the abuse she gets. “I get hurt when people call me names on social media,” Meera spoke. “I request them not to abuse and make fun of me. I’m here because of my work and I want to work for you people. Why do you want to make me cry? I don’t want you to cry and I don’t want you to feel bad because of me. Why do you want to say things that make me sad?”
But this, of course, doesn’t stop her. Meera insists that none of the hate will deter her. “It just makes me want to do better work and show the world that I will win the social media game as well.” She wants to keep up with the times and stay relevant, “You have to understand the market in the world now. Or else, you will fade."
So what does the future hold for Miss Meera Jee? “I’ll be doing a film in 2018 and I’m doing a lead role. In this film, we’re all on the same wavelength and I’m strongly committed to it," she shared. "It will be the best film of my career. It will be a comeback for me of sorts. I passed up a very good Jamal Shah film for this.”

Actor to make comeback to films very soon

Renowned Lollywood actor Meera revealed that she will soon be among the top heroines of Pakistan. She said that she’s working on bigger projects now and a Karachi-based film director has cast her in a film which will serve as a breakthrough for her career. She also added that all the female actors now are trying to be like her, making her their ideal.

[caption id="attachment_1567193" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: FILE[/caption]

Meera started working in showbiz about a decade ago. However, she has been inactive due to marriage-related court cases. The actor had filed a lawsuit seeking orders to restrain her self-proclaimed husband from calling her his wife. She stated that it took nine years for the court to finally issue a verdict in her case of jactitation of marriage.

Meera and Captain Naveed's wedding reception to take place next month

“I never said I was leaving the film industry. I was doing other projects and also worked in Bollywood films as the industry here was in crisis at that time. I always give priority to quality work and I’ve been lucky with what I’ve done so far. I am now very excited to begin shooting for my next film in Karachi,” the Salakhain actor told The Express Tribune. She is very enthusiastic to about rebooting her film career which is why she recently made a guest appearance in a Lahore based film too.

[caption id="attachment_1567195" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: FILE[/caption]

When questioned on her favourite director in the industry right now, Meera replied, “There are many talented people in the film business and I really admire Ho Mann Jahaan’s director Asim Raza. His work has been very impressive and I feel that he is amongst the best directors in Lollywood right now. It will be an honour for me to work with him.”

She further added, “I am hopeful that with new people entering Pakistani cinema, the industry will flourish and be known to the rest of the world.”

Meera set to tie the knot again

The actor continued, “I’ve earned fame only on the basis of hard work and talent. I advise all girls in the industry to be a 100% dedicated to working hard. No one can become ‘Meera’ after starring in a few movies, it takes years of struggle."

"I made a good name for myself and did all sorts of roles, both in Urdu and Punjabi films. I don’t believe there is any competition for me in Lollywood. I don’t compare myself with other actors because I like to focus on positivity, honesty and commitment,” explained Meera.

When asked about the kind of films she wants to do now, Meera quoted, “Currently, I feel that I should do a comedy movie. I want to impress my fans with my acting skills once again and I think doing a comedy flick will help me accomplish that.”

Civil court issues arrest warrants for Meera

She also claimed, “I think everyone experiences hardships and difficulties but that does not mean that one should give up. I didn’t leave the industry during difficult times, like many others did, and I think that makes me a very strong woman.” With all the rumours and ups-and-downs, Meera has managed to stand her ground and we wish her nothing but the best for her upcoming projects.

Family judge rejects three applications filed by actress

A family court, rejecting four different applications, ordered day-to-day hearings in a jactitation of marriage suit which had been filed nine years ago by film actress Meera. She sought an order to restrain her self-proclaimed husband from calling her his wife.

In the court’s order, the film star was held responsible for keeping her own case lingering by submitting irrelevant applications. The judge warned her that such conduct was already causing delays in the dispensation of justice.

Family judge Babar Nadeem rejected three applications filed by Meera. In her first application, the actress sought exemption from attending court proceedings as it was dangerous for her to visit courts, being a celebrity.

After nine years: Meera’s marriage case verdict to be announced today

In the second application, Meera requested the court to form a commission to record her statement at home. In the third, she requested that her statements be recoded through video link as she could not visit the courts.

The judge also rejected a fourth application filed by Meera’s self-proclaimed husband Attiqueur Rehman. He asked that the film star be restrained from contracting a marriage with anyone till a final decision on her suit of jactitation of marriage.

However, the judge clearly mentioned in his order that records revealed that the case was still in its initial stages despite the passage of several years. It was also made clear in the order that the case would be decided by December 30.

Hollywood calling for Meera?

Meanwhile, the judge also summoned the record of the union council by November 16. The counsels of both parties put the onus of the lingering nature of the case on other. They alleged matters were delayed due to irrelevant applications filed by the other, while ignoring the main suit.

Actress expresses dismay and gloom over slow judicial process

Expressing her gloom and dismay over snail-paced court proceedings, actress Irtiza Rubab, popularly known among her fans as Meera, said on Tuesday that it took nine years for the court to finally issue a verdict in her case of jactitation of marriage.

The film actress had filed a lawsuit seeking orders to restrain her self-proclaimed husband from calling her his wife. The court is likely to announce the verdict today, nine years after Meera had filed the case.

Revival of Pakistani film industry leaving veteran actors behind

Meera had filed jactitation of marriage case on July 25, 2009 which kept lingering on due to Attiqueur Rehman who submitted over a dozen applications. These petitions sought orders to get her medically examined to prove she was his wife and that she be restrained from going abroad. There was also a lawsuit seeking possession of a house, claiming it Rehman’s property where Meera was living.

The petitioner also asked that Meera be restrained from contracting another marriage till a final decision on an application she had filed.

“This case has no legal position as it is completely based on forged documents,” she said. “Surprisingly, it took nine years for the court to decide this case,” Meera remarked. She said everywhere in the world, family cases were decided within three to six months, but her case lingered on for nine years.

“I wonder what happens to the poor women of society who remain trapped.”

Meera said she respected the judiciary and the Constitution of the country. The actress stressed she was not afraid of facing courts unlike former PM Nawaz Sharif and others who were running away from the judicial system.

Case details

Both the parties made complete efforts to establish a case against each other through different applications. However, most of the petitions were filed by Attiqueur Rehman, the self-proclaimed husband of the film actress.

Meera, in her jactitation of marriage petition, asked that Rehman be restrained from calling her his wife. She asked that the marriage certificate, which the ‘husband’ produced before the court, be set aside as it was fake.

In response to Meera’s lawsuit for jactitation of marriage, the self-proclaimed husband had filed an application seeking orders for the actress to be restrained from contracting another marriage.

The judge, after hearing detailed arguments, had reserved his decision for November 15.

During the court proceedings, Supreme Court Advocate Sardar Balakh Sher Khosa raised a point that it first must be decided whether the marriage certificate submitted by Rehman was original or fake.

As a result, the respective union council’s representative was summoned by the court. However, the official failed to appear until a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued.

Finally, after a year of court’s notices, an official of the UC concerned appeared before the court. He testified that the nikahnama was not registered in his union council.

Hollywood calling for Meera?

Meera’s lawyer further argued that the record of union council mentioned on the certificate showed that no such marriage was registered. Moreover, the stamps placed on the marriage certificates were all forged.

While the counsel for Rehman argued that the court that the nikahnama was valid and Meera had been gifted a house in DHA Lahore after their marriage. He implored there are several bank transactions which could prove that Meera had received money from Rehman’s accounts.

Actress claims she never tied the knot, while self-proclaimed husband asks she be restrained from marrying another

A family judge fixed November 15 as the date to announce an already reserved decision on applications filed by film actress Meera and Attiqueur Rehman, who allegedly claimed to be her husband.

The two filed application against each other with the actress claiming jactitation of marriage, while the so-called husband pleaded that she be restrained from tying the knot with another.

The counsel for actress Meera, Sardar Balakh Sher Khosa, through an application, requested the court that the decision be announced during his client’s presence, adding she is not available in Lahore on Saturday.

Actress Meera had filed application against ‘jactitation of marriage’, requesting Attiqueur Rehman be restrained from calling her his wife. In her petition, she told the court that she had not solemnised the marriage.

Hollywood calling for Meera?

Meanwhile, Attiqueur Rehman also filed an application, seeking court orders restraining Meera from marrying another till a decision on this application.

On Tuesday, the counsel for actress Meera completed his arguments and said Attique was lying before the court. He added the nikahnama, which was produced, was a forgery and there was no record of it in the union council concerned.

The advocate argued that the evidence produced by Attique was false. Meera’s counsel contended the court the marriage certificate produced by Attiqueur Reham was forged and asked that it be ‘canceled’.

He added that the stamps and signatures of witnesses on the marriage certificates were also forged. The lawyer pleaded with the court to declare the marriage certificate null and void. He concluded that Attique was trying to malign his client’s reputation.

Meera buys film camera, takes English tuitions for Oscar

On the other hand, the counsel for Attiqueur Rehman contended Meera had tied the knot with his client who had purchased a house for her in DHA. He added there were several bank transactions which could prove that Meera had received money from Attique’s accounts.

“Now Meera is claiming she had her own property, while the truth is Attique had given it to her after purchase.”

Meera’s counsel implored if any money trail is produced before the court to prove that his client had received any money from Attique’s account, he will withdraw the case.

'Punjab Nahi Jaungi' starlet is amongst many new heroines who are trying their hand at singing

Mehwish Hayat is an acting powerhouse. The starlet has aced every role she has portrayed on-screen so far, especially her most recent character Amal, in the blockbuster, Punjab Nahi Jaungi.

But acting isn't her only expertise. This jack of all trades can hold quite a tune and boy, does she do it exceptionally well! In an interview with T Edit magazine, Mehwish previously revealed that she had few concerts lined up in the US and and we just stumbled upon a clip from her performance in Arizona. Needless to say, we had to share it with you!

'Punjab Nahi Jaungi's' 'Raunaq-e-Aashiqui' will remind you of 'DDLJ'

Singing a rendition of the iconic Boom Boom by the legendary Nazia Hassan, the actor seemed to be having a ball of a time on the stage. And judging from the clip shared on Mehwish's Instagram, the audience seems to agree with us. Have a look here:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BbHgboVjqXL/?taken-by=mehwishhayatofficial

Of course, this isn't the first time the Dillagi star had showcased her singing chops. She made her Coke Studio debut back in season 9, alongside Shiraz Uppal in Tu Hi Tu.

A member of the show’s production crew previously stated, “Mehwish has done an impressive job as a singer as she was able to hold her own opposite Shiraz.” We concur!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pPUJE76V1s

Mehwish has also recorded some OSTs and theme songs for various television serials. Some of her singles include Tell Me Why (Meri Behan Aya), Pani Barsa (Man Jali), Mujhse Ab Meri Mohabbat Ke Fasane Na Kaho (Talkhiyaan) and a duet with Fariha Pervez for the Mirat-ul-Uroos theme song, Har Saans Gawahi Deta Hai.

And Mehwish isn't the only actress who has tried to broaden her horizons with singing. Many other divas have made similar attempts, some of whom seem to have emerged as winners, other... well, not so much.

Mahesh Bhatt is positively obsessed with 'Punjab Nahi Jaungi'

A video of Meera Jee, singing the Titanic theme song My Heart Will Go On, for instance, has been doing the rounds on social media these days. While most have been mocking the Kasam star ruining perhaps the most iconic film song of all time, we appreciate Meera's unshaken confidence as she reads the lyrics off of her phone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyVyokyrwZU

And then there was Urwa Hocane's poor attempt to jump onto the bandwagon and promote younger sister Mawra's debut Bollywood project Sanam Teri Kasam by posting a short clip of herself singing on Instagram. It was all fun and games till we realised that the performance was taking a questionable turn when the actor didn’t hold back and sang the highest notes through.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ5PbROjuSq/

And much to our horror, the Udaari star didn't stop there. Urwa later went on to release her first single Ao Le Kar Chaloun. Remember the alarming moment when she breaks into some those odd and questionable dance moves in those doll-like outfits? And, after 24/7 Lak Hilna from Punjab Nahi Jaungi, I believe we have established that the starlet definitely cannot groove.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH0nr91Q9w8

In Bollywood, many divas, such as former Miss World, Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha and Parineeti Chopra have also lent their voices for some projects.

While Parineeti, Alia and Sonakshi sung for their own movie, the Baywatch starlet was a step ahead the rest and released singles with international superstars like Pitbull and Will.i.am.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zjgq6-5uDtY

In My City trended at number one on Twitter several minutes after release. And her second single Exotic featured international rapper, Pitbull. In 2015, she sang the title song for Dil Dhadakne Do with Farhan Akhtar.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPhhZg9v9NU

Following the footsteps of her cousin Priyanka, Ishaqzaade star Parineeti Chopra also recently made her singing debut. From the soundtrack of her movie Meri Pyaari Bindu, Parineeti’s song Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahin gave us all kinds of feels!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4R39ofX-CQ

Similarly, Alia Bhatt made her singing debut in critically acclaimed movie Highway and followed it up with an unplugged version of Samjhawan in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya. While the song in the film is sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal, Alia’s version also garnered much praises from the industry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoCz3Vx1pXg

After Alia came Sonakshi, who made her singing debut with Aaj Mood Ishqaholic Hai. Sadly, the preppy, dance number is heavily auto-tuned and you can barely recognise the Dabangg star's voice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQzZQsI97II

However, even after receiving flak for her debut, the Akira starlet didn't quit and went on to become a playback singer for one of her subsequent movies.

“It (the song) is about how the girl will not stay silent, but fight back and that’s the spirit. We were shooting the music video and every time I went to give a shot, I would end up singing it with all my zest. It’s just one of those songs,” DNA quoted the Noor actor as saying.

'Punjab Nahi Jaungi' trailer makes us want to say, 'Shut up and take my money!'
It was recently reported that Nargis Fakhri will be making her singing debut with forthcoming single Habitaan Vigaad Di. Singer-composer Parichay, who has collaborated with the Rockstar starlet for the song, says he was blown away after hearing her voice. Written by Kumaar, the Indo-Canadian single will also feature rapper Kardinal Offishall.

“When we first got in the studio to record vocals, I was blown away by her dedication to get her vocals and pronunciation perfect, regardless of how many takes it took. Nargis was the right fit for this song and video, along with Kardinal, and I hope people like what we’ve put together,” he said.

Parineeti Chopra makes singing debut and we are impressed

It surely is a pleasure listening to actors such as Mehwish, Alia and Parineeti crooning, while on the other hand, you might want to put cotton balls in your ears to stop whatever torture Meera, Urwa, Sonakshi and Priyanka might subject you to. Guess it's better for some to stick to what they know: acting.

Last we heard, she was in talks of signing a Hollywood project. The starlet made her debut with an Indo-Pak joint project Nazar in 2005.

Meera's on a trolling spree and she's not sparing anyone!

The queen of controversy made headlines with her bold role alongside Ashmit Patel. She later appeared in Kasak opposite musician-actor Lucky Ali, the same year.

We wish Meera the best of success in her future endeavours.

Kudos to Meera jee for keeping it real whilst Manish Malhotra designs her bridal dress

The film failed to impress audiences and critics, but Meera didn’t give up until her third film Paanch Ghantey Mein Paanch Crore closed doors for her in 2012.

The Express Tribune has reached out to Meera Jee and is currently waiting for a comment.

She misses someone who 'doesn't care' about her...

Meera jee is one Pakistani celebrity you can love or hate but simply can't ignore! Whether its her overdone eloquent articulation in the English language or her never-ending list of eligible suitors, she manages to arrest our attention always - along with something that cracks us up, making for a lighter work day!

Meera's on a trolling spree and she's not sparing anyone!

The Kasak beauty recently posted a picture of herself on Instagram which was captioned: "Missing someone who doesn't care about me."

With the media world sugar coating their issues and strutting out their very best at all times, one can always count on Meera jee for keeping it real. Despite being on what looks like a luxe vacay, the actress posted this caption - something so many of us can relate to!

It certainly takes a strong-minded, blunt woman to share her feelings out loud in the open - without a fear of being judged. She definitely gets a nod from us for that!

Donning a turtle-neck sweater and wide framed shades, seems like the diva is living it up - but there's something lacking in her life for sure. The unapologetic, uninhibited expression of heartfelt emotions has earned respect for the lady, because admittedly, we have all been there - but only Meera can be ballsy enough to go public with uneasy emotions.

But the vacay roller coaster didn't end there. Shortly after feeling the grief of one-sided affection, she goes on to update us with her shaadi preparations, yet again, by giving credit to Manish Malhotra as he is the designer of her wedding dress.

Check out this Instagram post...

And tells us she is very excited.

This is not the first time a wedding is on the cards for Meera. As for us, we wish that this one materialises in full swing and the actor gets her happily ever after!

Families will host an elaborate ceremony in Lahore

Meera fans, listen up! According to the latest reports, the actor will soon be making things official with the much talked about Captain Naveed in an elaborate ceremony scheduled to be held in Lahore next month.

This news comes just a few weeks after Meera hinted that she was going to tie the knot soon but refused to disclose the identity of her groom-to-be. The Pakistani star said she wanted to keep the details private as every time she has spoken about marriage, the media caused her anguish by giving rise to countless hurdles which is probably the reason as to why she has not been able to get married yet.

Meera set to tie the knot again

Perhaps the biggest hurdle has been an objectionable viral video of Meera and Naveed’s which allegedly prompted both families to banish the Nazar star from their homes. It must also be noted that Meera is already caught up in a legal battle with a man named Sheikh Atique who claims to be her first husband.

However, things seemed to have taken a turn for the better now. Meera’s father Sarwer Shah told The Express Tribune that she has only signed a nikkah with Naveed in the US about two years ago and now, the families are simply hosting the receptions.

“Meera has had her nikkah with Captain Naveed already but there was this issue of Sheikh Atique that sprung up; he was claiming to be married to my daughter,” said Sarwar. “But he has not been able to provide any solid proof of their alleged marriage and our family wants to move on from this. The time is right for Meera and Naveed. We will announce the dates next month and send invitations out to all our relatives and family members.”

Meera's on a trolling spree and she's not sparing anyone!

Interestingly, Meera has previously denied reports of being married. While her nor Naveed, the former’s family revealed that they are planning to marry her off in a purely Eastern fashion. Both families have already arrived in the city to prepare for the impending nuptials.
