Reports suggest that the 'Aya Lariye' singer is currently out of Pakistan

Earlier today, the sessions court in Lahore held its second hearing of the Meesha Shafi-Ali Zafar case. Ali had filed a defamation case against the starlet stating that the latter had accused him of sexual harassment for personal gain.

At the first hearing, that took place on June 25, 2018, Meesha was asked to submit a response to the defamation allegations. However, she failed to appear in court or issue her statement.

According to court orders, Meesha must come up with a response to the defamation case by August 13, 2018. Sessions judge Shahzad Ahmed passed the ruling of today's proceedings.

Ali earlier stated that Shafi had falsely accused him of harassment. The petition issued by the Channo singer read, "Meesha's false accusations got her short fame but tarnished my reputation around the world. The court is requested to impose a fine of Rs1 billion on her as compensation for the damages.”

In a notice received to The Express Tribune, it is said that Meesha is yet to receive any notice sent by Ali. The court has ordered the Kill Dill actor to resend the notice, and show evidence of the summon being received by the Aya Lariye singer.

Reports suggest that Meesha is currently out of Pakistan. But her legal counsel Ahmed Pansota told The Express Tribune, "Meesha is not obliged to appear in court right now. She can be represented through her legal counsel."

Ahmed also explained that Meesha's legal team is still fighting on the sexual harassment claims that the singer had earlier filed. Meanwhile, Ali recently found himself in yet another controversy when evidence of him trying to sabotage Meesha's brother Faris Shafi's music career emerged. The Kill Dill actor had apparently asked music streaming giant Patari to remove Faris’ latest track from its portal.

The film is set to hit screens on July 20

This year has witnessed a number of local releases and it looks like it's not going to stop anytime soon. The Ali Zafar and Maya Ali-starrer Teefa in Trouble is set to hit screens on July 20 and we cannot wait to watch it. Taking cue from the recently released trailer, here is a list of five things to look forward to in Ahsan Rahim's directorial film debut.

1. Women in action

[caption id="attachment_1735914" align="alignnone" width="625"] SCREENGRAB[/caption]

Unlike other Pakistani films, Teefa in Trouble does not only show the male lead in action but also shows a strong female figure taking matters into her own hands. Anya (Maya) can be seen drifting across roads and handling weapons on her own. She's also often found smashing glass bottles on people's heads.

2. Exotic locations

[caption id="attachment_1735915" align="alignnone" width="625"] SCREENGRAB[/caption]

The film is shot in Lahore while capturing the beauty of the Walled City perfectly. However, as Teefa (Ali) travels to Poland, the views are to die for. From cityscape to country-side shots, the film seems to be a picturesque one.

3. Music

[caption id="attachment_1735916" align="alignnone" width="625"] SCREENGRAB[/caption]

Now it's no surprise that Ali excels in his forte of music and singing - which means you can expect really good music in Teefa in Trouble. There's also a dance number in the film and surprisingly, it's NOT an item number!

4. Drama and comedy

[caption id="attachment_1735917" align="alignnone" width="625"] SCREENGRAB[/caption]

No desi film is complete without some drama, however, Teefa in Trouble appears to comprise just the right amount. Ahsan seems to have conveyed his message in a very subtle fashion. Moreover, having Faisal Qureshi in the film means guaranteed fits of laughter.

5. Cast

[caption id="attachment_1735918" align="alignnone" width="625"] SCREENGRAB[/caption]

Since the teaser of Teefa in Trouble came out on February 22, the production house has been repeatedly revealing the actors that one can expect to see in the film. Apart from Ali, Maya and Faisal, Javed Sheikh, Asma Abbas, Simi Rahael, Nayyar Ejaz, Mehmood Aslam and Sofia Khan will be seen in titular roles. Tom Coulston who has worked in Hollywood films such as Skyfall and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is set to make his Pakistani film debut as Andy.

Digital activist and lawyer, Nighat Dad explains laws pertaining to sexual harassment

The country has been rocked by the allegations made by renowned singer Meesha Shafi against internationally acclaimed Ali Zafar. The former took to Twitter to speak about her experience with Ali, claiming that he harassed her.

In an interview, the Aya Lariye singer said that the incident happened twice. Ali denied all allegations and stated that the matter might be taken to court.

The Express Tribune caught up with one of the lawyers from Meesha’s legal team, digital rights activist Nighat Dad, who explained, “Meesha has a strong case and I’m saying this as her legal counsel. I can’t, of course, share much about the inner details of the case.”

Women in courts

Nighat revealed that Meesha’s team received a notice from Ali on April 25 [today]. Discussing the nature of the case, the activist stated, “We have the requirements to fulfill with whatever the law says.” She explained that since there is no set history of such cases in Pakistan, this one will determine the outcome. “There are no set precedents; there are no set case laws, specifically in relation to media personnel. If there was a precedent set, we could have relied on it and strengthened the current case more. But we’re not saying that it isn’t strong right now.”

Lawyers in Pakistan often refer to previous judgments, verdicts and sentences while ordering new ones. Nighat pointed to the lack of such cases in court, which leads to a dangerous abyss where the Meesha-Ali clash might change the outcome of current laws.

“It’s a fact there are only few women in media who have come forth about sexual harassment, which means that the number of women who go through the whole legal course is very small,” Nighat mentioned.

The lawyer has received a lot of support from the legal fraternity, especially other female lawyers. “A lot of people want to come forward but they are fearful because of the general impression of courts.”

Nighat further elaborated that the court for sexual harassment is headed by a woman, so victims and witnesses need to be encouraged to come forward. “The more women that come forward, the more cases will be heard, which is how the ombudsperson and judges will be able to see the bigger picture.”

She was also quick to point out that not many women in the country can afford to fight such battles in courts. “This could be a defining moment for laws against sexual harassment,” the lawyer remarked.

Linking Meesha’s case to that of other victims of sexual harassment, Nighat stated, “Meesha was empowered but she found her voice after so many years. Look at the backlash she received when she spoke up. That is exactly what discourages women and survivors from coming forward. The attitude of society towards victims should change.”

The legal counsel added that media needs to be careful as it’s very difficult for women in the entertainment sector to share their stories of harassment. She exclaimed, “It is difficult for women to speak up against harassment anywhere, but when a woman of the media fraternity says that she has been harassed, she is subjected to the kind of opinions Tallal Chaudhary gave.”

Addressing the media, Minister of the ruling party (PML-N) Chaudhry said that the Meesha-Ali scandal "seems like a hatched plan that the two created together to ‘capture cameras’ and increase ‘ratings’.

Your clothes, your fault

Nighat added, “Women in the media hear things like, ‘Hey you wear revealing clothes, you can’t possibly be harassed and if you were harassed, it was all because of your clothes or it must be consensual’.”

She also said that women enabling the culture of victim blaming is also a part of the problem. “Women saying, ‘He was my friend. He didn’t do this to me, so he couldn’t have done this to you,’ need to realise that harassment won’t stop if we keep protecting the accusers.”

Hate speech

Meesha and her team have received a lot of hate speech.

The lawyer added that the entire fight is massive and difficult as Ali is more powerful, but Meesha is stronger as she came forward.

Last year, local anchor Tanzeela Mazhar came forward against her colleague, Agha Masood Sorish for sexually harassing her. She spoke to The Express Tribune about her experience, saying that while the law can be in your favour, political pressures may stop you from getting justice.

Tanzeela said, “In 2008, many women came forward accusing Agha but no action was taken against him. Eventually, I resigned because I was told that the political involvement wouldn’t bring me justice.” She also explained that her team had evidence and the law was on their side

The document asks Meesha to apologise in two weeks time

After allegations of sexual harassment from Meesha Shafi, Ali Zafar expressed that he would be filing a case against the Aya Lariye singer. Ali denied all claims of inappropriate conduct and stated that Meesha's accusations are "baseless."

According to multiple local publications, a notice has been sent to Meesha stating that if she does not issue an apology within two weeks time, Ali will file a defamation suit against her.

Meesha also recently tweeted that she has hired Nighat Dad and Muhammad Ahmad Pansota as her legal counsels for the case.

https://twitter.com/itsmeeshashafi/status/988684808246132736

However, a source close to Ali told The Express Tribune that the notice that has been taking rounds on the internet is fake. "No notice has been sent to Meesha as of yet," revealed the insider. "But we will be sending one today and filing for defamation."

The fake notice mentions that Meesha needs to pay Rs100 million but as per current rumours, the actual amount is more likely to be Rs1 billion instead.

Earlier, the Channo singer broke his silence when Meesha accused him of sexually harassing her. She claimed that the former had behaved inappropriately with her on multiples occasions.

The incident has sparked a #MeToo movement in the country where more women are coming forward sharing their horrific stories.

You'll be shocked at some of the revelations

Bollywood is like a big, fat family!

Not just in terms of lending support to one another but most of the stars are actually related to each other by bloodline.

While Kangana Ranaut has spoken of nepotism in the industry multiple times, a lot of family connections have gone unnoticed.

Compiled from The Indian Express, here is a list of seven celebrity duos that are related to each other.

1. Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra

[caption id="attachment_1693221" align="alignnone" width="768"] PHOTO: BOLLYWOOD LIFE[/caption]

Two of Bollywood's biggest families are very close, however, there is more to that bond. Karan's mother, Hiroo Johar, is Yash Chopra's sister meaning that the two film producers are, in fact, cousins. Was film production a family business?

2. Tabu and Shabana Azmi

[caption id="attachment_1693222" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: FREE PRESS JOURNAL[/caption]

Tabu's father, Jamal Hashmi, is Shabana's brother, hence making the Haider actor Shabana's niece. We can clearly see that acting runs in their blood.

3. Farhan Akhtar and Farah Khan

[caption id="attachment_1693224" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: THE INDIAN EXPRESS[/caption]

The Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara actor's mother, Honey Irani has two sisters — Daisy Irani and Maneka Irani. Ace choreographer Farah is Maneka's daughter implying that the two are cousins as well.

4. Shraddha Kapoor and Lata Mangeshkar

[caption id="attachment_1693225" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: THE INDIAN EXPRESS[/caption]

The 31-year-old actor's grandfather is cousin to sisters, Lata and Asha Bhosle. We now know where Shraddha's singing talent comes from.

5. Sonam Kapoor and Ranveer Singh

[caption id="attachment_1693226" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: BOLLYWOOD LIFE[/caption]

Well, this one is a shocker. Sonam's maternal grandmother and Ranveer's paternal grandmother are sisters, which means that the two are cousins. This also implies that fans might never be able to see both of them paired together for a film.

6. Alia Bhatt and Emraan Hashmi

[caption id="attachment_1693229" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: THE INDIAN EXPRESS[/caption]

This comes as a surprise as Emraan has done a number of films with Alia's father, Mahesh Bhatt. The Jannat actor's mother is Mahesh's cousin, making Alia and Emraan cousins as well.

7. Ali Zafar and Aamir Khan

[caption id="attachment_1693230" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: THE INDIAN EXPRESS[/caption]

Saving the best for the last. Prepare yourself as you digest this one. Ali's wife, Ayesha Fazli is Aamir's distant cousin. The Dangal actor was taken aback when the Channo singer pointed out that they were brother-in-law to each other. This also means that Ali is related to Bollywood's Imran Khan.

[caption id="attachment_1693803" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: YASH RAJ FILMS[/caption]

FUN FACT: Ali and Imran have played brothers in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan.

Mustafa Ali Khan demands men need to take a stand

You would have seen him in the Osman Khalid Butt, Ainy Jaffri-starrer Balu Mahi as the former's confidant. Actor Mustafa Ali Khan has taken a stance to start a #MeToo campaign for men. But it's not what you think.

Mustafa's proposed #MeToo won't be talking about the sexual harassment incidents faced by men. He feels that men should realise that it's because of them that women feel unsafe.

In a Facebook post, Mustafa wrote, "Every single man is guilty. Guilty of perpetuating this environment where EVERY woman feels unsafe. I too am guilty."

[caption id="attachment_1692512" align="alignnone" width="625"] SCREENGRAB[/caption]

He coins #MeToo for men as a term that means 'I, too, have made women feel unsafe.' Mustafa adds, "I have always been careful in how I treat every woman I interact with. I know I am guilty of, in one way or another, making them feel unsafe. So yeah, #MeToo."

The Balu Mahi actor states that he is responsible for standing quite or joining the laughter whenever someone has catcalled a woman. He adds, "I am guilty of ogling or staring at women - sometimes long enough to make them uncomfortable. #MeToo."

https://www.instagram.com/p/BP0R6V2A1IX/?hl=en&taken-by=nargisikoftay

Mustafa also explains that saying statements such as "boys will be boys" is part of the problem. He wrote, "I am deeply ashamed of my actions and my inaction. I apologise to every woman who has ever felt uncomfortable or unsafe around me. And I promise, I will try to be a better human being."

The actor concludes by explaining that this is not a debate about "feminism, sexism, or any other 'ism'", but rather about being better human beings.

What transpired on the day of the 'incident'

Pakistan’s entertainment industry has been rocked by allegations against Ali Zafar that he has denied. The scandal has sparked a national conversation about sexual misconduct and promoted others to come forward with few in defense of Meesha Shafi and others in allying with Ali.

Meesha has gone on record saying that the incident took place at Ali’s residence, late last December, when they were jamming for a concert. A number of women have come forward claiming they were present when Ali and Meesha were jamming. They said that the two maintained a very professional relationship while Ali’s nine band members along with his manager, Taha Sadaqat, were also present. Meesha’s manager, Farhan and the event organiser were also amongst the ‘witnesses’.

One of Ali’s band members, Aqsa Ali said, “As a woman and a musician, I have to talk about this issue. Meesha said that her conscience doesn’t allow her to say quiet – so does mine.” She added that she has traveled with the Channo singer and seen girls “throw themselves” at him, but he has always made sure to be friendly and not make anyone uncomfortable.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bh1RGDNHbgq/?taken-by=imaqsa.ali

“At this particular jam session, I was present as a vocalist. So was Farhan and the entire band along with the event organiser. We had a great jam session. As a woman, if I would have felt that there was any sort of misconduct, I would be the first person to take a stand,” explained Aqsa. She also mentioned that everyone jammed for about an hour and Ali and Meesha were not left alone – even for a moment.

Aqsa claimed, “Ali is a genuine person who has always been supportive. Accusing someone is easy but living with the guilt is difficult. I was upset with Meesha’s rude behaviour towards everyone in the band but I feel worse because she is misusing and disrespecting this movement.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bh1Vvpbl-iU/?taken-by=kanzamunir

Another band member, Kanza Munir also came forward via Instagram in Ali’s defense. She wrote, “I have been working with Ali for past three years and I stand witness to this particular incident that Meesha has quoted.” Kanza added that there over 10 people present at the jamming session and whatever interaction occurred, was witnessed by everyone who was there. “I have spent hours jamming with Ali on different tours which have been pleasant and professional. It’s important that this movement is not taken for granted or misused for personal reasons, stealing limelight from real cause,” she explained.

Earlier, a Twitter user named Sofi accused Ali Zafar for misconduct during the Shaukat Khanum US tour, stating that the organisers were informed of the incident but they still went ahead with the rest of the shows. However, Naila Khan who was part of the organising committee tweeted, “It is a complete lie because the Washington DC event was the last one in the series. There was no event after that.”

[caption id="attachment_1692476" align="alignnone" width="625"] SCREENGRAB[/caption]

In an interview, Meesha stated that she shared the stage with Ali only because it was about business and she didn’t want reasons like these to affect work. However, Ali and Meesha were hired to perform separately but their duet performance was optional. Currently, Ali is preparing to sue Meesha for her accusations.

The Express Tribune has reached out to Meesha Shafi for a comment and is awaiting reply.

The singer wants all men to question themselves if they've ever violated a woman

Popular singer Momina Mustehsan has urged actor Ali Zafar and all men who have violated a woman in any way, to acknowledge their fault and apologise unconditionally.

Momina posted an open letter on social media, admitting that she has been a subject of harassment herself. She shared her thoughts after singer Meesha Shafi openly accused Ali of sexual harassment, which he denied.

Shafi's statement has sparked Pakistan's own #MeToo movement and more women are sharing their experiences as well.

"This issue is bigger than just that of Ali Zafar," Momina wrote. "This is about the relationship of trust, that men take for granted with women. Very often, as we can see, women are violated by the men they know, trust and often work with," she added.

https://twitter.com/MominaMustehsan/status/987351835311771650

The Afreen Afreen singer also addressed why most women take years to finally speak up. "It's because rather than shame the perpetrator, society at large tends to shame the victim. There is also immense social pressure to ‘not say anything', and keep matters like this private because some people may immediately question the woman's character," said Momina.

The 25-year-old singer extended her support to all women who have had to deal with inappropriate behaviour. "It's time Pakistani women are able to stand up and hold their oppressors accountable," she said.

Momina also mentioned that harassment of any sort is not acceptable. She further mentioned, "I would want to ask Ali Zafar and all other men one question: do you think you have ever, knowingly or unknowingly, violated a woman in any way or form? If you have, I request you to acknowledge your fault and apologise unconditionally."

The singer tweeted yet again, asking Ali to respond to her question.

Actor claims #MeToo is a serious issue but could have been avoided if people followed the Holy Quran

The entire debacle surrounding Meesha Shafi and Ali Zafar has taken over the Pakistani entertainment industry like wild fire. Amidst the controversy, many local celebrities have come forward either supporting Meesha for speaking up or Ali for taking such matters to the court.

While the big guns such as Mahira Khan and Osman Khalid Butt have asked that matters related to harassment should be taken seriously, Hamza Ali Abbasi was bound to share his two cents as well.

The Parwaaz Hai Junoon actor wrote, "With this entire #MeToo global epidemic on the rise, I am beginning to realise that Islam was right all along when it ordains gap between the two genders. So called modernism has brought us to a point where the line between flirting and harassment is insanely blurred."

https://twitter.com/iamhamzaabbasi/status/987244307861180416

Adding to his tweet, Hamza explains that women who are now speaking up of harassment have, earlier, been comfortable when men tried to flirt.

https://twitter.com/iamhamzaabbasi/status/987253543257235456

He further mentions that #MeToo is a serious global issue. However, if people had followed what was mentioned in the Holy Quran, such issues could have been avoided.

https://twitter.com/iamhamzaabbasi/status/987256487373430785

Hamza also cleared the air saying that he was not justifying men or silence as consent, but instead, talking about how such incidents can easily be manipulated.

https://twitter.com/iamhamzaabbasi/status/987258190684442624

To end matters on a neutral note, the actor ended his thread of tweets with a promotion of Motorcycle Girl.

Meesha Shafi, yesterday, broke her silence on her experience with the singer leading to a new wave in Pakistan

Ever since Meesha Shafi has come forward sharing her story of sexual harassment at the hands of Pakistan's famous singer, Ali Zafar, many others have broken their silence as well - admitting that they, too, have felt harassed by the Channo singer.

One such individual is Humna Raza, a Pakistani blogger who writes about spreading positivity, also shared how a fan-moment with Ali didn't quite turn out to be what she had expected.

"I was at an event and I saw Ali Zafar there. I was very excited so I decided to get a selfie with him," Humna tweeted on Thursday. "He didn't say anything, but smirked and opened his arms that I took as a yes. I stood next to him and felt his hand go up the side of my waist. I felt it and I knew what happened."

https://twitter.com/HumnaRaza/status/986987056286044161

Humna added that she had misunderstood Ali back then but when she heard about Meesha's allegations, she knew hers was a case of harassment.

Another Twitter user, Leena Ghani also gained some courage to speak up on the matter once Meesha broke her silence. In a tweet, Leena penned, "In the many years I have known Ali, he has, on many occasions, crossed boundaries of what is appropriate behaviour between friends."

https://twitter.com/Leena_Ghani/status/987041422326026241

Speaking of what defines indecent conduct, Leena shared, "The memories of the times where Ali thought he could get away by saying vulgar things to me still disgusts me."

LUMS Alumni, Maham Javaid took to Twitter explaining how Ali once tried to harass her cousin. She mentioned that they even thought of reporting him but since he is a celebrity, no one would have believed them.

Twitter user, Sofi also shared that Ali had misbehaved with a lot of girls when he visited the US.

With the huge number of women speaking up about their harassment stories, it seems that the #MeToo movement has initiated in Pakistan. Earlier, Khalid Bajwa of Patari was accused of inappropriate behaviour that forced him to step down from his position in the firm. Just like Hollywood, women across Pakistan are now calling for change.

London, Paris, New York on top of Indian music charts.

Even before its release, Ali Zafar’s film London, Paris, New York (LPNY), is doing wonders for the Pakistani musician-cum-actor as his songs are ranking on top of radio channel Air Check India.

Zafar, who has written six songs for this film and has also sung and composed them, is the first lead actor in a Bollywood production to take over the role of a music director. The songs that have left a mark on Indian listenership include, “Voh Dekhnay Mein”, “Ting Rang “and the title track “London, Paris, New York”.

Bollywoodlife.com attested to “Voh Dekhanay Mein’s” popularity and dubbed it as a song with “infectious appeal”. The news of its popularity couldn’t come at a better time for the actor as the LPNY release date is just around the corner — March 2.

An excited Zafar said about this achievement, “I am humbled by the response. Making music for films is not an easy job. You have to compose a song within the parameters of the situation which has been decided by the writer and the director. I consider myself lucky that whatever I sent to the producers and director was liked by them. I didn’t have to remake any song.”

On the terrific response he got from his fans, he said, “What a singer awaits the most is the response of his fans. And up till now, this venture has been very encouraging. I have been performing live with co-star Aditi Rao in different cities for film promotions and the response we have gotten from the crowd has kept me going.”

Says public figures ride on controversy everywhere but it’s not the best method for a career boost.

Pakistan’s poster boy in the Indian media Ali Zafar has said that it is unfair to judge the entire country on the basis of what actors like him and Veena Malik do in India, Indian newspaper The Times of India has reported.

“You have to understand that she’s an individual and you can’t judge the entire community on the basis of one person’s behaviour,” Zafar told the IANS news agency, talking about Malik. “You shouldn’t even judge Pakistan through me. The whole Pakistan is not like Ali Zafar or Veena Malik.”

“And such individuals are there in every entertainment industry. In India also there are women who ride on controversies. It happens everywhere. It happens even in Hollywood,” he added.

Zafar says he makes sure he doesn’t do anything that could bring a bad name to his country. “I pay all my taxes. I make sure all paper work is in place and streamlined. I want to work in a manner that I stay away from controversies,” he said.

“Whatever films I do, I make sure that I don't do scenes or say dialogues or do stuff that could hurt people back home. In my capacity, I try and keep everyone happy but that’s just me. Everybody has their own style of working,” he said.

For Zafar, being controversial is not the best method to boost one’s career.

“It’s unfortunate ... I think one should avoid controversies as long as possible, they may help you in the short run, but I don’t think those who are talented need controversies to boost their career,” he said.

“It’s always good to stay away so that you can work smoothly. You try to stay away from trouble for your own sake and for the sake of other people. I think anybody who comes from there (Pakistan) to here (India) should be cautious and conscious, otherwise it puts others into bad light,” he said.

Zafar, a popular singer in Pakistan, forayed into Bollywood with debutant director Abhishek Sharma’s Tere Bin Laden (2010), which won him critical acclaim from all over. He was later seen in Yash Raj’s Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and right now he is looking forward to the release of his new film London Paris New York, which hits screens on March 2.

Has the actor positioned himself correctly in Bollywood?

Whenever a Pakistani entertainer makes it to an international industry, we feel immensely proud. Whether it’s the news of Atif Aslam singing songs for Hollywood production Man Push Cart or reports of Shafqat Amanat Ali extending his classical vocals for a Bollywood film they all bring forth a lot of positive recognition for the nation. However, there is no celebrity who Pakistanis are more proud of than the prodigal singer and actor Ali Zafar.

After a successful singing career in Pakistan, he stepped into Bollywood with a lead role in Tere Bin Laden, a performance which was lauded by critics. Zafar followed it up with a role in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. However, while the actor was sharing screen time with Katrina Kaif, he still required another Bollywood leading man Imran Khan to make the frame look picture-perfect.

Although there’s been plenty of attention and buzz about the star, it seems that Zafar is still searching for the right place in Bollywood. This is best demonstrated by the trailer of his latest venture London, Paris, New York (LPNY) which looks good on the screen but really isn’t the holy grail of all acting gigs. Directed by Anu Menon, produced by Shrishti Arya and Goldie Behl, the production stars Zafar with actor Aditi Rao Hydari.

LPNY’s story is centered on Lalitha and Nikhil. Lalitha is a middle class south Indian girl from Chembur (a Mumbai suburb) who is on her way to New York to study politics with a full scholarship and Nikhil is a rich Punjabi kid from Bandra (a posh Mumbai suburb) who is headed for London to study film-making. From the trailer, the film has the makings of an average romantic comedy, something similar to the Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan starrer Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu.

Although Zafar doesn’t look out of place, the important question to ask is if these are the kinds of films and roles which should form the benchmark for Zafar’s success. Certainly not! Playing the standard chocolate hero might be a dream com true for typical Bollywood newcomers but this shouldn’t be the end-all for someone as gifted as him.

Even Zafar’s latest film, David Dhawan’s remake of the 1981 classic Chashme Buddoor, is once again a romantic film where he plays a comic role. It’s important for the talented actor to break free from the standard mould as the days of being a chocolate hero are over. The audience is maturing with every film and so should Zafar.

Considered one of the best looking men in Bollywood and extremely gifted in own right, Zafar has all it takes to rule Bollywood. But he continues to bank on his good looks and star quality instead of displaying versatility and depth in his roles.

If the star integrates his singing and acting talents, he can become a dual threat in Bollywood. The last person to perfectly pull this combination off was Kishore Kumar, whose voice bears a resemblance to Zafar.

The problem also lies with directors across the border who have failed to capitalise on his talent by typecasting him in certain kinds of roles only. If Zafar gets the right mentorship and direction from directors like Vishal Bhardwaj, we may see a drastic change in his positioning. Currently, there are rumours of him considering signing on to a Hollywood project. We hope that this new project will focus on another side of Zafar and captilise on the star’s versatility and adaptability.

Pakistani ‘Prince of Pop’ Ali Zafar, who is creating a name for himself in Bollywood, has been getting many film offers in recent months. Zafar was recently offered the role of a gigolo, reported Times of India.

The producer, who approached the singer-turned-actor, insisted that Zafar was perfect for the part. Despite Zafar’s refusal, the film-maker persisted and even offered to pay him whatever fee he demanded. However Zafar remained adamant and refused the offer. The “Channo” hitmaker was last seen with Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan.

Of late there’s been a lot of speculation regarding Zafar’s finicky nature in films. Times of India stated that, “If Akshay Kumar and John Abraham are playing male escorts in (Desi Boyz) an upcoming film, why can’t he?”

Last month Ali Zafar created waves in the media when he blatantly stated that he won’t kiss his co-star Aditi Rao on screen in his upcoming film, London, Paris, New York. Zafar’s publicist Ammara Hikmat clarified to The Express Tribune, “Ali refused to kiss his co-star and the script had to be changed to suit his demands. He tries his best to keep general values of his home country in mind and work in a way where he can fulfil his professional obligations and not disappoint his fans at the same time. We have witnessed his choices to do this and make us proud.”

Ali Zafar has refused to kiss his female lead in his third Bollywood film, London, Paris, New York.

It was thought by many that once Ali Zafar, crosses the border, he would change. However, it has been reported there have been no drastic changes in the singer-cum-actor’s attitude as he climbs the ladder to success on the silver screen.

Recently there have been rumours that Zafar would be sharing ‘intimate scenes’ with his co-star Aditi Rao, in his upcoming Bollywood romantic-comedy, London, Paris, New York. The film, about a couple who fall in love while visiting the three cities, is slated to release next year.

According to koolmuzone.com, Zafar revealed at a Mumbai press conference that the script demanded intimate scenes between him and his co-star Aditi Rao. “We have tried to make a film that will make you fall in love with the characters. In this film we have very family intimate scenes. So, you can watch it with your family.” Zafar’s co-star Aditi Rao stated, “We have not forced sex scenes anywhere just because it is believed that sex sells.”

However, Zafar’s publicist Ammara Hikmat has clarified to The Express Tribune that, “By intimate, Ali didn’t mean obscene scenes. He refused to kiss his co-star and the script had to be changed to suit his demands. By intimate he means it is a cosy and romantic film.” Hikmat added that Zafar was, in fact, joking at the press conference when he said, “Well I do make sure as soon as I wake up I brush my teeth because I’d be doing very intimate scenes.” Hikmat said, “He believes that everyone has the right to express their own freedom of speech and action in reasonably defined parameters. He tries his best to keep general values of his home country in mind and work in a way where he can fulfil his professional obligations and not disappoint his fans at the same time. We have witnessed his choices to do this and make us proud.”

Hikmat also revealed that, “This is the first time that an actor (Zafar) is writing lyrics, singing and composing at the same time for a Bollywood film.” While shedding light on his upcoming venture, Zafar said, “I am really looking forward to this film now that Mere Brother Ki Dulhan has raised the bar and exceeded the revenue of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Ready in Pakistan. I can’t thank my fans enough and I hope they will make my future endeavour a success.”

The director took a cue from matrimonial ads and wove his story around it.

After receiving a positive response for his role in the adult comedy "Delhi Belly", actor Imran Khan returns to charm with his chocolate boy look in "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan", a light-hearted and twisted tale of love.

Produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films, directed and written by debutant Ali Abbas Zafar, the film also stars Katrina Kaif and Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zafar in the lead roles.

Set in the milieu of an urban middle class family, the quirky comedy deals with two brothers - Luv Agnihotri (Ali Zafar) and Kush Agnihotri (Imran Khan). While Kush works as an assistant director in the film industry, his elder brother Luv works as an investment banker in London. A casanova by heart, Luv realises he wants to get married and settle down with an Indian girl.

So Kush is given the task of bride hunting for his brother and during this quest, he encounters some wacky and funny situations. Finally, he meets Dimple Dixit (Katrina), who likes to lead a life with no boundaries. She is also from London, but is a true Indian at heart.

Dimple is the craziest girl Kush has ever met. So, while everything is finalised and preparations are in full swing, Kush realises he has fallen in love with his brother's 'dulhan'. Then follows a string of comical and unpredictable events that promise to leave audiences in splits.

One would never believe that matrimonial advertisements can inspire anyone and become a medium to entertain, but in case of "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan", the director took a cue from matrimonial ads and wove his story around it.

Apart from this, Ali Abbas Zafar has also been inspired by Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Chupke Chupke" and "Gol Maal" while giving shaping up the movie. The film has been shot in Agra, Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun and Mumbai.

"Mere Brother Ki Dulhan" is the second Bollywood film of Ali Zafar, who had made his debut in Abhishek Sharma's "Tere Bin Laden", where he had played the Al Qaeda leader and received accolades for his role.

Both Imran and Katrina are currently on cloud nine after the success of their films "Delhi Belly" and "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" respectively.

This is the first time the two are paired together and their
on-screen chemistry looks equally impeccable.

Sohail Sen, who has previously composed music for "What's Your Raashee?", has penned the music of the film. Not just this, Ali Zafar too has lent his voice to a song "Madhubala", which has become quite a rage.

The film also has John Abraham in a friendly appearance.

The movie is in production and is slated for release in the first quarter of 2012.

Pakistani ‘prince of pop’, Ali Zafar, fresh from an acting project with Yash Raj Films — Mere Brother Ki Dulhan — will now feature in the upcoming film London, Paris, New York, confirmed a press release by Fox Star Studios and Rose Movies. The film, produced by well-known film-makers Goldie Behl and Shrishti Arya, also marks the directorial debut of Anu Menon.

“In our film we have a new cast of immensely talented actors — Ali Zafar and Aditi Rao — who we are sure will definitely appeal to the youth in this coming of age love story” confirmed Vijay Singh, CEO Fox Star Studios, India.

London, Paris, New York is Zafar’s third film in B-town after the singer-cum-actor made his Bollywood debut last year with Tere Bin Laden. The 31-year-old’s second Bollywood production Mere Brother Ki Dulhan — which also features Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif — hits theatres in September.

“For London, Paris, New York, I am composing the music, writing the songs and singing them as well. I hope I live up to expectations, if any. You will see that in my future projects as well,” stated Zafar.

Capturing the angst of those in their early 20s, London, Paris, New York is the story of Nikhil and Lalitha — two completely different individuals who are drawn to each other in spite of their differences or perhaps because of them. The film follows their journey of love as they meet in London, Paris and New York for a night in each city. London, Paris, New York is a love story which also seeks to bring back wit into Bollywood’s romantic comedies.

The movie is in production and is slated for release in the first quarter of 2012.

Mere Brother ki Dulhan is Zafar’s very first experience working with Yash Raj Films.

The music of much-awaited Yash Raj venture Mere Brother ki Dulhan (MBKD) was released on August 9 with live performances by Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan, according to a press release by Yash Raj Films. Playing the third character in the love triangle in MBKD is Pakistani ‘prince of pop’ Ali Zafar. This is Zafar’s second acting project in B-town and his very first experience working with Yash Raj Films.

Apart from acting, Zafar has also contributed his powerful vocals in a duet, “Madhubala”, with Indian singer Shweta Pandit. The song has been released online and fans can have a listen on YouTube and other social forums. The premiere of the film is expected to be on September 9 and rumour has it that Zafar will be promoting the project along with his co-stars, Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif, in India. According to Zafar’s publicist, Ammara Hikmat, the three actors will perform live during a promotional event of the movie.

Mere Brother ki Dulhan is a romantic comedy set in the upper-middle stratum of Northern India and has Kush Agnihotri (Imran Khan) looking for an ideal Indian bride for his brother Luv Agnihotri (Ali Zafar) who lives in London.

Zafar plays the role of 30-year-old confused investment banker residing in London. A Casanova at heart, Luv has everything he could ask for, until one day he realises he wants to spend his life with a traditional Indian girl, so he assigns the job of finding a suitable match to his brother Kush.

Kush’s quest comes to end when he finds his brother’s match in Dimple Dixit (Katrina Kaif), and all is going well until Kush ends up falling in love with his brother’s fiance.

Singer-turned-actor Ali Zafar is reportedly helping Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif in achieving her goal to master the art of strumming.

People are raving about Katrina Kaif's rockstar image in her upcoming film "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan" (MBKD), but not just in films, the Bollywood actress is learning to play guitar even in real life.

Zafar is Katrina's co-star in MBKD, which is a love triangle and also stars Imran Khan and during the shoot of the film, he gave Katrina some guitar lessons.

"It was great working with Ali. The nice thing is that Ali is also a musician and since I'm learning how to play the guitar and I'm very interested in it, I'm trying to learn from whoever I can", said Katrina.

"Farhan Akhtar taught me some stuff during 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' and Ali has also taught me some stuff during this film. He is a good teacher and we are trying to get into a form where we can play a live song together in one of the promotional events for this film very soon," Katrina told reporters here at the music launch of the film.

Take a look at 10 of the most anticipated films to be released this year.

A number of Bollywood films have been released that have done well in the market in 2011, yet the latter half of the year seems to have more than 50 per cent of the year’s most eagerly awaited films.

10) Mausam:

So what if the promos are downright boring? This film still earns itself a spot in the list by sheer virtue of the man at the helm of the affairs. Pankaj Kapur has finally decided to go behind the camera with this love story. And so what if he cast his son Shahid Kapoor opposite Sonam Kapoor? It really can’t be worse than the father-son collaborations like Koi Mil Gaya.

9) Mere Brother Ki Dulhan

Yash Raj Films may not be as big as it used to be, but Katrina Kaif is. And her sheer presence in any production is enough reason to go check it out. This one also stars Imran Khan and our own export Ali Zafar in a role that, going by the promos, holds some significance to the plot. Let’s just hope that the film has one.

8) Aarakshan

In spite of its jarring loopholes, Prakash Jha’s political saga Rajneeti had a genuine dramatic appeal. This one, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, is a take on the issue of reservation of seats in the education system and might just surprise audiences, like Jha’s previous film. The promo shows Saif Ali Khan getting enough scenes to ensure that he gets to revel in the role.

7) The Dirty Picture

Backed by Ekta Kapoor, the film chronicles the life of a B-grade actor. While Kapoor shrewdly catered to the masses with jarring cliches when handling her small-screen projects, her big screen ventures have mostly been those that defied convention. And with a stellar cast of Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah, this one is bound to raise eyebrows.

6) Ladies vs Ricky Bahl

The team of Band Baaja Baaraat is back with this rather fun-titled film that has Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh in the lead once again. Little else is known about the film that is slated for a December release, but let’s keep our fingers crossed in hope for another little film with a disarming appeal.

5) Agent Vinod

This one is first of the films which are expected to deliver the goods on some level, not only because it stars Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, but also because of the very intelligent man calling the shots. Sriram Raghavan, the maker of Ek Hasina Thi and Johnny Gaddar, is making an action-thriller this time around. There seems to be little that can go wrong with a team like this.

4) Rockstar

Starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri, who is half-Pakistani, this film is highly anticipated not least because it has AR Rahman as a musical producer. We have high hopes from this film; firstly, because it’s been a long while since Rahman got a musical to go gloriously wild with. And secondly, it’s from a film-maker like Imtiaz Ali, who gave us one of the most memorable love stories of the past many years with Jab We Met .

3) Bodyguard

Barring Dabangg, none of Salman Khan’s films from the past four years have been even remotely engaging. This film has him paired with Kareena Kapoor and is sure to become one of the biggest blockbusters, regardless of how bad the storyline is. But with Khan looking better than ever these days, we should never lose hope.

2) Ra.One

Hyped from the very day of its inception, this sci-fi flick is Bollywood’s claim to we-are-not-behind-Hollywood fame. Its first teaser featured little detail but fabulous action and effects, definitely promising a film that could define the year 2011 at the movies. Even if the film doesn’t, Akon’s “Chammak Challo” will.

1) Don 2

Why is this film the most anticipated of the year? Because it stars Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra. Because the first part was arguably the most fun Indian remake. Because the second part is original and Farhan Akhtar is always expected to deliver iconic stuff, simply because of his debut film Dil Chahta Hai. And because it has one of the best trailers of any film released this year.

But more than anything, it is because this is the only film on this long list that will please both the masses and classes, the public and the critics, the entertainment-hungry and the intellectual lovers of cinema.

The trend of globally-telecast live online performances is catching up in Pakistan.

Music companies and major artists across the globe have taken a big leap for the promotion of music — they use the internet to promote music. In Pakistan, very few companies have been able to manipulate this frontier to put local artists on the global map. However, although the trend is largely unexplored in this part of the world, it’s catching up with many mainstream artists going for online web-telecasting.

Recently Ali Zafar opted for a live-web telecast of his concert, allowing young fans to enjoy the performance while sitting in the comfort of their homes. Bands such as Overload have also started an online live concert series, which covers the band’s favourite artists, thus rapidly increasing exposure for the band on a global level.

How it all began in Pakistan

Stage Monks, a unique platform for musicians, started in February this year when it carried out Pakistan’s first globally-telecast live performance online. The event, held at Gloria Jean’s cafe in Lahore, saw several leading local artists including SYMT and Jimmy Khan performing live for people across the globe.

“It was really cool, imagine 3,000 people tuned in live to see a small local gig,” says CEO Walnut studios, Adnan Butt. “There were people from Quetta interacting and requesting songs to play live.”

Butt has been working for one of the first Pakistani record labels to gain entry into the global music scene through maximum exposure via the internet. Recently, Walnut Media also used live web telecasting for Open Mic (organised by the Knowledge Factory) and is now looking to hold several virtual gigs in places such as Islamabad as well.

“We have to make our presence felt throughout the world. It would be amazing to have local artists collaborate with the global ones,” says Butt. “You can easily replace television with the internet and it’s easier to market music through this media.”

Apart from that, Butt has been focusing on English covers. He pointing out that cover artists like Tyler Ward and Kurt Schneider have an estimated 90 million users on web platforms such as YouTube. The idea is to amass an adequate following that allows an artist to gain not only international recognition but also a self-sustaining method to make money through web initiatives such as digital downloads and ringtone purchases. Thus, it ensures that the artists are driven away from issues such as artist monopolies, piracy and lack of record companies.

Locally, the notion of playing covers has been widely criticised. In fact, some people even attribute it as one of the reasons for the collapse of the music industry in Pakistan. Despite this, covers done by leading artists such as Faiza Mujahid — famous for the 1992 World Cup theme song — and lesser known Abdullah Qureshi — popular for his cover of “How to Save a Life” (by The Fray) — have shown some potential of gaining viral publicity.

Walnut studios are slowly turning into a hub of local music talent. The in-house productions of top five billboard singles are created with experienced producers and mainstream artists. They have widely collaborated with Octave, closely associated with organising underground gigs. Interestingly, some of the talent found was through scouting and referrals. The company then undertakes the responsibility of recording and producing a track which is then promoted through the internet with the hope of attracting views through YouTube.

Butt rues the stagnation of the local music industry. “There was a lifecycle for underground artists who, after several years of performing on the sidelines, could finally make their way to the mainstream,” he said. However, now the case is different as the underground scene continues to expand while the mainstream music arena is on the decline.

Pakistani pop star and actor Ali Zafar, who will perform live along with Bollywood actors Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan to promote Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, is set to burn up a lot of energy at rehearsals.

Zafar, who is a seasoned stage performer, said, “Yes, that’s the plan. I have been told Katrina and Imran will be joining me on stage. Agreed, they are not musicians but, at the end of the day, we’re all performers and part of one project. We start as soon as I return to India.”

He has been asked by producers Yashraj Films to help Katrina and Imran acclimatise themselves to live performances.

“Maybe my unique selling proposition is live singing. But they will take to the stage quickly. I know we’ll have fun,” he added.

Zafar was recently voted the hottest male actor of 2011 in a survey. Reportedly, the singer’s closest competitor Ranveer Singh was upset about losing the crown to Zafar. “I’ve met Ranveer. He was extremely sweet and nice. He’s super-talented. I wish him all the best,” said Zafar, switching on his diplomatic side.

He confirmed that he will be in India soon to star in another film. “Before I do David Dhawan’s Chashme Buddoor, I have signed another film in Mumbai.

The romantic musical comedy features Bollywood stars Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan alongside Zafar.

The flick is produced under the banner of Yash Raj films.

The promotional video of MBKD describes the film as a love story with a ‘new’ tragedy, calling it this year’s ‘maddest’ entertainer.

In the trailer, Khan is on the hunt for a potential bride and the ‘right’ wife for his brother – played by Zafar.

Reportedly, Khan’s character ends up falling in love with his brother’s fiancé, played by Kaif.

Ali Zafar aims to imparts music lessons to less privileged children.

Our music industry’s blue-eyed boy has done it again! It is nothing related to Jhoom, his latest album, nor its songs and videos. It’s all about Ali Zafar being in the headlines and creating ripples not only on the Indian shores but on his country’s soil too.

The multi-faceted singing personality is also a painter, model and an actor. Zafar’s song “Dekha” from his album Masty was part of the soundtrack of American film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps which was released on September 24, 2010. He is the fourth Pakistani artist after Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Strings and Atif Aslam to have his song featured in an American film.

Zafar, who made his film debut in Indian director Abhishek Sharma’s comedy film Tere Bin Laden, is in the news these days for many a good reason, across the border. Just one step, as far as Tere Bin Laden is concerned, earned the singer-turned-actor great accolades everywhere, especially in Bollywood.

Recently, the chocolate boy won the top slot as the Hottest New Face in an online poll conducted by the Times of India. Zafar is followed by Ranveer Singh of Band Baaja Baaraat. The poll on the Indian publication’s website is known to be a transparent and fair voting mechanism.

When the celeb wins laurels, he thinks it is better to appeal to the masses and has a charitable purpose in mind. Ali Zafar has plans to give back to society. He intends to promote his cause for charity by teaching music to lesser-privileged children. Apparently, the Pakistani prince of pop is in talks with various non-profit organisations.

According to a source close to the singing sensation, “Ali was contemplating quite a few options but finally decided on sharing his knowledge on music with the lesser privileged as he wants to put his talent to good use and looks like he’s found the right way.”

When The Express Tribune asked Ali Zafar about his charitable plans and music lessons for under-privileged children, he emphatically asserted: “Music is something that comes naturally to me and I consider it to be the purest thing I can impart at the moment.” WITH ADDITIONAL INPUT FROM DNA

After Tere Bin Laden, Ali Zafar will now be seen in another Bollywood film Luv Ka The End, to be released on May 6.

After playing a Pakistani journalist in Abhishek Sharma’s debut film Tere Bin Laden, Ali Zafar will now be seen doing a cameo in another Bollywood project titled Luv Ka The End, which is expected to be released on May 6.

It looks more like Ali Zafar has got a taste and flavour to go the Bollywood style. If Atif Aslam can commercialise his voice on the Indian silver screen and shine, Ali Zafar too believes that he can cash on his good looks.

Luv Ka The End, is a Hindi comedy has been directed by Bumpy and has been produced by Aashish Patil, whereas the lyricist is Amitabh Battacharya and the music director is Ram Sampat.

The Times of India has quoted it “as hip, zippy and young!” But what we came to know about Ali Zafar’s performance is that in one of the film’s song “F-U-N-Fun-funna”, for which he never accepted the payment and insisted that the cheque be given to a charitable organisation.

Today, it looks more like he is glued to Bollywood, with the offers that he is getting (though, the details, we are still trying hard to fetch) and with the increasing fan following he seems to be poised to be working more for Bollywood, now!

The blue-eyed boy of Pakistani music industry Ali Zafar tells his fans in The Express Tribune, about his work with Y- Films and about his journey which kicked off from Tere Bin Laden and more over about his fan following in India.

How has the journey been from Tere Bin Laden to Luv Ka The End?

It has been amazing and everything one can ever wish for. My journey has been a smooth ride just because of the love my people have always shown. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the support that everyone has given me along the way.

Tell us about your fan following in India

I keep getting direct feedback from my Indian fans on Twitter and I would say I am touched by the love and respect people hold for me. Jhoom being the second highest selling album in India is a big honour for me and speaks for the admiration itself. I couldn’t be more thankful.

What are your expectations from Luv Ka The End when it gets released?

It’s the first production of Y- Films (a new division of Yash Raj Films). They have aimed to bring some fresh content and the music explains the same. Even the tones and accents of the singers had to be natural and contemporary. So for me, it’s not watching myself, it’s seeing cinema adopting originality and fresh concepts and I hope people will appreciate the effort.

What are the updates on Mere Brother Ki Dulhan?

I have sung three songs for the movie, out of which one was wrapped up just yesterday (April 29) after an exhausting yet fun-filled five days of nonstop dancing under the sun. After a few days break, the shooting of my next song is going to start.

Rumour has it that you’re about to sign another Bollywood film?

There is more in the pipeline, I would say at least two movies, but it’s too soon to disclose anything about them.

Any plans for Lollywood?

I haven’t come across any offers which don’t have me holding a gundasa with moustaches and a big belly. So none for Lollywood as yet.

What’s up next?

Next? More and more movies in Bollywood.

Bollywood actor Katrina Kaif on dealing with media.

From her breakup with Salman Khan to her getting together with Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif’s personal life is constantly under the scanner. The British-born actor, speaking to IANS, says the unrelenting attention does affect her sometimes but she has learnt to cope with the pressures.

“We are human beings and sometimes it does affect us especially when so much is being said and written that doesn’t make sense. But one learns and I have also learnt to cope with it,” Kaif said in a recent interview.

“I have learnt that media and celebrities go hand in hand and now I don’t feel the need to clarify my stance and I am not bothered. Audiences have also become mature and they also understand what is right and what is wrong,” added the 26-year-old.

Kaif was introduced into the Hindi film industry with Boom in 2003, but the first hit came only four years later with Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya. Her career took off with the success of Namastey London, in which she teamed up with Akshay Kumar, released in the same year.

Some of her big box-office hits are Partner, Welcome and Singh Is Kinng. Her item number “Sheila Ki Jawani” from Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan has got perhaps the maximum publicity, but Kaif has also forayed into meaningful cinema with New York and Rajneeti.

Asked whether she is a director’s actor, Kaif said: “Every actor is a director’s actor. It’s the director who helps the actor in bringing the character alive on screen and then there is the script to support. It is part and parcel of the profession.”

As her career skyrockets, expectations have also become higher and Kaif admits to some nervousness.

“If you lose that nervousness or anticipation that means you have reached a saturation point which is the worst thing for any actor. For me, it is important that I live up to the expectations of my fans and I don’t let them down.”

So does Katrina fear failure?

“Fear is something that drives you to do good work and it is important for a person to maintain a positive attitude and keep on doing good work,” she said.

With films, endorsements, performances and media appearances crowding her to-do-list, the actress admits she sometimes finds it difficult to cope with the hectic work life.

“Sometimes it becomes difficult to stay calm, cool; and with a busy schedule I do get tired, but it’s part of our job. I keep doing things that help me to relax. I do things that rejuvenate me, things that give me extra help,” she said.

The actor has no films scheduled for immediate release, but will be seen in a new LUX soap ad to promote its new range — Lux Fresh Splash.

This year, her first release will be in June with Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, also starring Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar and Kalki Koechlin. After that she will be seen in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan that stars Pakistani actor Ali Zafar. ians

Ali Zafar makes a mark, unlike many other singers and bands, after returning with his latest venture “Jhoom”.

Every new entrant in the music industry generates some amount of buzz or hoopla — depending on who it is and who is backing them. There are only a few singers or bands that have made a mark whenever they have returned with a music album — Ali Zafar does this with his latest venture “Jhoom”.

Before we go into the details of the music, the compositions and the arrangements, one must appreciate Ali Zafar for knowing his strengths; he is a great vocalist who makes pop music.

With “Jhoom” Zafar goes to the next level — more than just a notch above “Masty”, and better than “Huqa Pani” in terms of music production and the choice of instruments.

The album is an amalgamation of acoustic numbers and sufi pop; the star goes on to compose and sing two of Mirza Ghalib’s classic verses. Three of the 12 tracks on the album, namely, “Allah hu”, “Nahin Re Nahin” and “Daastan e Ishq” have already been performed on ‘Coke studio’. The remix culture helped Zafar with two more tracks, an R & B mix of “Jhoom” and the dhol version of “Daastane Ishq”.

The highlight of the album is definitely the title track “Jhoom”, that takes you through a melodic journey of simple yet convincing poetry, encompassing the concept of love; one that can be interpreted in different manners.

The song has an intrinsically catchy melody and a progressive feel; it grows on to you as a listener. Next comes an acoustic number “Jab Se Dekha”, which has a very mellow feel and the reason why the song can possibly be seen in a Bollywood flick is because it fills up the vacume that the likes of Lucky Ali and Shaan left empty since they faded from the pop music scene of India.

With “Jee Dhoondta Hai” Zafar achieves an significant milestone. It’s a signature Ghalib verse which has previously been sung by Roop Kumar Rathod and maestros like Malika e Tarannum Noor Jehan and Mohammad Rafi.

Upnext is another Ghalib classic “Koi Umeed bar Nahin Aaati”. This too has been sung by different artists but his rendition has a melancholic vibe, thereby not only does he capitalise on great poetry but he gives it his own colour. Zafar leaves his signature with the track “Tu Jaane Na” which is quite similar to “Sajania” in terms of music and lyrics.

All in all Ali Zafar has grown as a musician. This makes up for the disappointment felt with “Masti”.

Jhoom overall is a well thought out album, even though all tracks pertain to the same genre. The bigger question remains, how many of these songs will make it to Bollywood?

Ali Zafar is back with a bang as his third studio album Jhoom hits stores today.

Ali Zafar is back with a bang as his third studio album Jhoom hits the stores today. The album brings with it a legacy of its own as it was mixed at the famous Abbey Road Studios and is set to simultaneously release in Pakistan through Alif Records and by YashRaj Music in India.

Aptly chosen to be released on February 14, a day ear marked for PDA (public display of affection) and love in all its forms, the album is all about the happenings of love.

Over sushi, Ali Zafar candidly talked to The Express Tribune about the lesser known side of the South Asian pop icon – about everything that has not already been published before.

Find out how Zafar met his wife, why he chose her to be his wife, who he thinks his son looks like, and of course what his plan for Valentine’s Day are and that’s not all, The Express Tribune goes a mile further speaking to Zafar’s wife, Ayesha as well.

How did you guys meet?

He said: She came to Pearl Continental to get her portrait made; I slipped in my business card.

She returned a couple of days later with a friend wanting another portrait; this time she said she didn’t need the card she already had my number, the rest is history.

She said: We met at a party and then I went with my friend to Pearl Continental where he would sketch because she wanted a portrait made.

How would you rate yourself as a husband?

He said: You should really ask her, 7 I think.

She said: He’s fantastic, he actually listens.

What is the one thing that only she has?

She has me (!)

What annoys her about you?

He said: I wonder what she’ll say? I sing in my sleep?

She said: He leaves his shoes in the middle of the room and I invariably trip on them.

The craziest thing you’ve done for her?

He said: I think it was for her birthday, she thought I had forgotten, I made her go on to the balcony to get something and as she walked out there was this firework display. Come to think of it I’m not very crazy.

She said: He’s very calm and collected. He’s not really a very crazy person but he’s really fond of giving surprises and has given me plenty of surprises over the years. He’s also made a lot of handmade cards for me.

How did you manage a relationship over ten years? How do you cope with the long distance?

He said: It’s all thanks to her. Her patience, her understanding and her giving nature has made this possible.

She said: We always knew we wanted to be with each other and always knew that we would end up together. We spend so much time apart that when we do finally manage to come together we really value each other’s company.

Do you believe in Valentine’s Day?

He said: Yes. What is better than love?

She said: He’s hardly around for any Valentine’s Day. Even this one but once he planned a surprise with my cousin.

Why did you name your son, Azaan?

The Azaan, musically is a perfect melody; it’s serene and spiritual.

How do you want your son to know his father?

She said: I don’t want him to be spoilt or overshadowed by his father’s success and realise that things will not be offered to him on a silver platter.

His father has worked very hard to get where he is and he will have to work just as hard to be someone in this world.

What grounds you?

The conversations I had with the waiters while I worked at Pearl Continental, because of which, for me the chief guest and valets are of equal importance.

You want to be remembered as?

Someone who made a difference, someone who pushed boundaries, someone others want to emulate.

What are your thoughts on Justin Bieber?

I’m glad it worked out for him. His music is not for me though.

Why a record company?

I’m very aware of how trying and difficult my journey has been ... the endless waits – be it outside a studio or waiting for a director to call back. It’s only fair to reach out and do what I can to ensure that someone starting their journey today has lesser obstacles.

What’s the craziest fan request?

Having to sign undergarments publicly

Ali Zafar — the husband, the father or the super star?

He said: The father.

She said: The husband.

Not as a superstar?

He’s always been my superstar.

Ali Zafar clears air with recent tweet, declaring he has been bestowed with honour of singing the World Cup Song.

Pakistani actor and India’s new heartthrob Ali Zafar has cleared the air with his recent tweet, which openly declared that he has been bestowed with the honour of singing this year’s World Cup Song.

The excited singer tweets to his fans about the offer, “That’s right! I have been given the honour to sing, write and compose the World Cup song.”

Strangely enough, it was Atif Aslam who just a few days ago tweeted that he was completely oblivious to the happenings the industry, “Am I too slow or the media is too fast, don’t even know about the world cup song.” Although Aslam seems to be a late member to the tweeting world, his followers have grown tremendously in a matter of weeks and the singer has already drawn 2,721 followers on the micro-blogging site.

However, local stars are not the only ones communicating with their fans; Bollywood veteran Shabana Azmi also took the micro blogging site to thank all her friends and fans for their support towards her Mijwan benefit. Azmi has taken serious steps to alleviate gender discrimination and encourage female education in the Mijwan village. “All the stars walking the ramp for my Mijwan benefit are giving me such good vibes — a big hug to all and to Manish Malhotra’s indefatigable energy,” Azmi tweeted on Friday night.

Other encouraging messages call on international celebrities from across the globe to reunite and strengthen familial ties through their personalised tweets.

Paris Hilton decided to spread the joy with her sentimental messages to her family, “Love my aunt’s both very much! All sisters get in an argument sometimes, its normal. Love my family!”

Here is our collection of the best 10 tweets celebrities posted this week.

Ali Zafar becomes the first Pakistani ever to be nominated for three Bollywood awards for recent film Tere Bin Laden.

Ali Zafar, who won the hearts of millions with his debut film Tere Bin Laden, has been nominated in three prestigious Bollywood award shows. This has happened for the first time. No Pakistani actor has been nominated for any Bollywood awards before.

Zafar was nominated as best debut (male) in Zee Cine Awards (January 14), most promising newcomer (male) in Filmfare Awards 2011 (January 29) and Star Screen Awards 2011.

Though Zafar did not get any award in Singapore at the Zee Cine awards, he feels lucky for the love and recognition he received for his debut film. On a social networking website, he wrote, “Had the best time ever at the awards. Not just because of all the respect from the fraternity but the company of the most beautiful woman on earth… my wife!”

Ali Zafar is mastering his new album at the famous Abbey Studios.

After setting his mark in Bollywood, pop icon Ali Zafar has just got another feather in his cap with his upcoming album Jhoom being mastered in world famous Abbey Road Studios, that rendered its services to legendary band, The Beatles in the 1960s. The quartet recorded 90 per cent of their creations at the studio and recorded a continuous string of famous hits for the band.

“My album Jhoom is being mastered at the world famous Abbey Road Studios today. So glad that finally I have nothing left to mix,” tweeted Zafar, who was on cloud nine sharing yet another achievement.

Jhoom is Zafar’s third album and in it he is giving a Sufi streak to his music. The album will also reprise Zafar’s performances for Coke Studio, “Yaar Daddi” and “Dastaan-e-Ishq”.

Talking about his upcoming project, Zafar said Jhoom is “primarily a Sufi album with a couple of love songs. Don’t expect any ‘Channo’ or ‘Masty’.”

The multitalented singer and actor is currently working in his second film Mere Brother Ki Dulhan starring ace Bollywood actors Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan.

Zafar, who is also contributing his music to the film’s soundtrack, recorded his first song this month. “Recorded my first song for Mere Brother Ki Dulhan today,” Zafar posted on his Twitter page earlier this month.

The studio was made in house number 3 in St John’s Wood which was originally purchased by EMI in 1929 with a vision to transform it in to the world’s first custom built recording studio. More than 30 years later, this studio became a part of history. First issued on the 26th September, 1969 Abbey Road was the final Beatles album to be recorded but not their last to be released.

For the first time on a Beatles album, the front cover contained neither the group’s name nor the album title just that iconic photograph taken on the zebra crossing near the entrance to the studios in London in August 1969.

Abbey Road entered the British album chart at no. 1 in October and stayed there for a total of seventeen of its 81 weeks in the chart and the studio has been known to make history ever since.
